yeah, being that I actually know Terry Mann and have worked with him, I'm going to have to respectfully (and perhaps disrespectfully) disagree with you here. Terry is an absolutely wonderful man, he's very kind, personable, has no ego and is extremely talented. He also happens to be a wonderful father btw.
That's perfectly fine, we're all entitled to our own opinions. It's so cool you had the honor to work with him, and he does make a great Rum Tum Tugger!
I giggled when he blasted the wall. xD Maybe the actors and actresses aren't my favorites here, but I love the way they did this music video. xD Its neat how it kind of shows the kitties "morph" into the Cats. xD It kind of supports my point on another video where someone commented "I wonder if humans in the play see the Cats the way they appear to us on stage?" in a way. Because I answered "Well, probably not. Just like in Free Collars Kingdom the manga series.".
I love the queen Cats in this :) they all look so fluffy and their dancing is awesome. Bomba looks so sexy! I love her voice. Cassie to! the makeup and costuming is still better then some modern productions I've see. I like Tugger, I think he did a great Job! and shouldn't be compared to any other Tuggers ;)
I honestly thought Cats was an actual music group rather than a stage musical because of this video and the general promotion the show was receiving around this time. (I was still only 7 or 8, after all).
@Boonedaba His what now? Terry Mann is pushing 60, his career has spanned 40 years and two Tony nominations, he's in the ensemble cast for the most popular show on Broadway at the moment, and he's teaching the next generation at WCU. I think he's fairly secured.
@Boonedaba Terrence Mann is married to actress Charlotte D'Amboise (who, incidentally, is playing Cassandra in this particular 'Cats' video.) Their daughters were at the Addams premiere. Mann and D'Amboise both teach as well as perform and they've spoken about their family in interviews, etc.
Any days where I'm overcome with a case of the blues and just totally bummed out and negative....there's something about this video that just gets me back to square 1. I don't particularly love CATS but I love Terrence Mann pretending to be a cat rock star. It's sort of my vibe I guess.
Hahaha, embrace the 80's campiness! To those who hate this, this is the ORIGINAL BROADWAY TUGGER you're watching! His interpretation of the dude is different from Partridge's. Embrace it, love it, laugh at it if you want! The beat is really catchy though. XD
Some people have commented about the janitor/custodian in this video. You do realize, don't you, that the janitor/custodian is Terrence Mann, the Rum Tum Tugger in the video?
Ohh my god, everyone shut up about John Partridge!!!! If you don't like this one then you don't need to comment! If you like John Partridge so much then go watch the movie version!!! Gosh.
The opening sequence (0:00 - 1:15) would've made the perfect opening and concept to the 1998 Broadway film version of CATS. Think about it: It's night time; the theater is closed and empty, except for a single janitor sweeping the stage. Outside the theater (through a first-person camera view), someone, or something, crawls out from behind a set of garbage cans and approaches the theater. The mysterious figure looks at one of the theater show posters - 'CATS: The Musical'. The unseen creature approaches the closed theater doors and they inexplicably open, the creature enters the theater. The janitor is still sweeping away as the creature enters the theater and makes its way down the aisle towards the stage. As the unseen creature nears the stage, the janitor suddenly hears something and turns. He is surprised to see a single grey cat with black stripes looking at him from the corner of the stage. The janitor doesn't move or say anything as the cat continues to stare at him. The grey cat then slowly turns it's head and gazes out at the empty seats. The janitor follows the cat's gaze and he gasps in shocked as over a dozen different cats race down the isles and leap onto the stage - all of them meowing at different times. Suddenly, the stage lights turn off and the entire theater (and the janitor) are instantly plunged into darkness. A minute passes, and then the stage lights suddenly turn on again. The janitor gasps in surprise when he sees that the plain empty stage has been transformed into a massive well designed theater stage; its setting now looks like a clearing in a junkyard on a moonlit night. The janitor turns around in wonder at the new stage. Just then, the janitor hears a voice sing, "Are you blind when you're born?". He quickly turn and sees the same grey and black-striped cat, only now it has instantly turned into a man wearing stage makeup and a multi-colored spandex resembling a cat's body. The unnamed janitor looks around in confusion and surprise as more voices begin to sing. He begins to back away slowly as the now-transformed cats all begin to move and dance. The janitor quickly jumps off of the stage as the cats continue to sing and dance the song "Jellicle Songs". As the number continues, the janitor slowly begins to smile; he can't help but be impressed with the cats and their choreography and song. The janitor finally just shrugs his shoulders, walks over one of the empty theater seats, and sits down to quietly enjoy the show. As the musical proceeds, the camera view cuts to the seated janitor once or twice to show his happy, sad, and surprised reactions to each song. After the cats sing the finale to their show, the janitor instantly gives a standing ovation. As he applauds, the janitor suddenly hears clapping and cheers coming from all around him. He turns and is surprised to see he is now among an audience in a full-house theater. As the cats begin to bow in thanks to the newly materialized audience, the janitor just shakes off the confusion and continues to cheer and clap with the crowd - thanking the cats for giving him an amazing performance and an amazing night.
@Imorphien I believe you about the whole "hes a good man" thing, and I probably would LOVE to see him play the Beast. But, the fangirl stuff is not "garbage". At least, not to me. I'm not sure what to call it. All I know is that lots of people set their standards to the first version of something that they ever get to see, and my first ever viewing of CATS was the VHS/DVD one, at its probably the same for naiter, so please don't call us out. We can't help what version we might have seen first.
@Boonedaba Angela is wonderful. She's also not raising two little kids and swapping showbiz/parenting back and forth with a spouse who is a prominent stage performer too.
for some reason, the american version of this tune seems rushed and frantic to me...I like the slinkier west end one better...this is like cats meets rocky horror hahah
@cutemimzyx00 This is like Tugger version 1.0. The first person EVER to play Tugger. They still had not worked out all the kinks and also they had to make it a bit more rock video for this. He obviously does not come screaming through a brick wall in the musical. This is just promo.
@Broadwaymelodie Oh, I am so glad someone else thinks this too! I thought I was the only one! Makes you wonder what Tim Curry would have done with this.
What most people have to consider is, Terrence Mann was the first person to play the role on Broadway, and the original westend guy wasn't much like the flashy Tugger. I think that John Partridge owes most of his Tugger influence to Terrence Mann.
Look people! If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all! Also, this was done way before John Partridge was even though about being Rum Tum Tugger! Give the people in the video a break!
My favorite rum tum tugger was John Partridge!
Marisa E. i know! its obvious
Marisa E. yeah
Marisa E. mine is Tyler Hanes
Mine too
mine too!!! he had SEX!
I'm fourteen and I've been listening to this and watching Cats since I was six. I always swore I'd marry Rum Tum Tugger. I still love this.
Awww, that's great Cats brought you so much joy at such a small age. And believe me, we've all thought that! XD
Happy 24th birthday
Ha! Fantastic 80s stuff. I love Partridge in the DVD version, but Terry Mann originated the role that others merely mimic. Awesome voice.
Terrence Mann rules still today. Fell in love with him as Tugger, & he's still got that something over 30 hrs later.
yeah, being that I actually know Terry Mann and have worked with him, I'm going to have to respectfully (and perhaps disrespectfully) disagree with you here.
Terrance Mann (Tugger) was also the original Beast iin "Beauty and the Beast"
I loved playing Tugger in Aust and Asia!! One of my life highlights...
This feels so 80s I LOVE IT! Move that mane and show that chest Tugger!
He's as cute as Richard Marx!!😻😻😻😻😻😻😻
I remember this video on MTV I guess it was to promote the musical traveling I really dont remember I just wanted to see it again. Pretty cool.
I laughed at the ending. "Meow?" *giggles*
OH MY GOSH!!! This is soooo funny. But yet again Terrence mann owned the rocker scream.
I honestly thought Cats was an actual music group rather than a stage musical because of this video and the general promotion the show was receiving around this time. (I was still only 7 or 8, after all).

You are awesome actor and Cats is one of fave the is beauty and the beast 🤩❣️
SO much better than the movie version.
Terrance Mann was the greatest Tugger in my book!
spikelilgirl Tawney Newsome
@Boonedaba Terrence Mann is married to actress Charlotte D'Amboise (who, incidentally, is playing Cassandra in this particular 'Cats' video.) Their daughters were at the Addams premiere. Mann and D'Amboise both teach as well as perform and they've spoken about their family in interviews, etc.

Hahaha, embrace the 80's campiness! To those who hate this, this is the ORIGINAL BROADWAY TUGGER you're watching! His interpretation of the dude is different from Partridge's. Embrace it, love it, laugh at it if you want! The beat is really catchy though. XD
Rum Tum gotta be a hard roll to pull off.
Literally gotta have that sex appeal and swagger. Find the inner beast.
If you were a janitor in the theater and you suddenly have catgirls showing up on stage, you would be happy to see them too! LOL!!
Awesome music video!!! I hope that "CATS" will return to broadway for a fantastic revival
I’ve always wanted to see the broadway play
I love the rum Tum tugger because of the cat eye makeup and the collar
Terrence Mann Plays Rum Tum Tugger in this, he was the original on Broadway back in the 80's
Some people have commented about the janitor/custodian in this video. You do realize, don't you, that the janitor/custodian is Terrence Mann, the Rum Tum Tugger in the video?
He’s so cute cat friendly cat rum Tum tugger
I love Rum Tum Tugger ... he's the sexiest cat ever.
Really shows the rock and roll that was hip at the time
Damn, it’s wild this is the same dude that had me feeling all sorts of uncomfortable as his character “Whispers” in Sense8…
I love this video! At first, it is all creepy and weird but later, it turns into the awesomeness of Thr Rum Tum Tugger!!!
Terrence Mann does such a great job in this. I adore him.
haa this song!!! it makes me happy
I just saw the guy who plays Rum Tum Tugger here in another broadway show, called Pippin :3
sooo 80's! love it!
Ohh my god, everyone shut up about John Partridge!!!! If you don't like this one then you don't need to comment! If you like John Partridge so much then go watch the movie version!!! Gosh.

Right? Like, this is the new go-to of mine for reaction gifs 🤣
Honestly this is my favorite version of this song.
I remember seeing this show at the Winter Garden in the 80s! Brilliant! Fun! And, as usual, Terrence Mann is hot!
Whenever I see this video, I always yell at the janitor: "GOOD GOD, MAN. PUT YOUR FUR BACK ON." And then he does. And I'm happy. :3
4:41 "Meow?"
I won't lie, this actually used to scare me xD Love it now, though.
He is the best!!!
@gcibbarelli There aren't I think you are mistaken the gray swing for a second victoria.
This might be the greatest thing ever. :)
I remember VH1 used to play this around the time they debuted.
I like it the costumes!!!
The opening sequence (0:00 - 1:15) would've made the perfect opening and concept to the 1998 Broadway film version of CATS.

I like that idea. Clever
Was I the only one waiting for Twisted Sister to pop up?
His carrer is shot. He's playing a supporting role in The Addams Family Musical.
I love this Cats the musical
yes its totally epic ! Let's call him Johnnie Steel haha
gosh, look at that @ss! :D Terry was totally the best Tugger. What a cute devil...
Always been my favorite video
Fightin round the world with Tugger
HAHA OMG. This is SO 80's that it's scarey! I'm glad they've changed the song and such since then.
4:41 is my favorite part XDDD
80's version with John Partridge would rock T^T
That'd be so amazing!!!!
Trust Tugger to make such and entrance by breaking down a wall x3
Who is else is here after watching the CATS trailer?
?
Me! Heard the song for the movie and wanted to hear the original, I prefer the original if I am being honest
It might be Rumpleteazer. They don't have Etcy in the US tour. It looks a lot like her costume in the tour. Though it could be Etcy
Some of the interesting things I noticed is the some of the make-up,costume/wig designs and choreagraphy is still used in some productions.
@Imorphien

I like dogs, but there really is something magical about cats
@Boonedaba Angela is wonderful. She's also not raising two little kids and swapping showbiz/parenting back and forth with a spouse who is a prominent stage performer too.
OML why begging looks like horror movie from 50's?
the back, the front is Etcy or Rumple
ahahahahahahahahaha I strangely love this. has me in stiches!
Hey same here i remeber watching it on vhs
ahahahahahahahahaha I strangely love this
I remember seeing this on MTV when I was younger and it was at that point that I never wanted to see Cats.
@TheCelticDove I would guess either etectera (who was in the early broadway) or a swing.
HE HAS A HUGE SMILE AT 4:42
for some reason, the american version of this tune seems rushed and frantic to me...I like the slinkier west end one better...this is like cats meets rocky horror hahah
This is insane,
Very old and weird but good at the same time:-)
He reminds me of David Bowie
John patridge will forever be the ultimate tugger
this tugger rock
@cutemimzyx00 This is like Tugger version 1.0. The first person EVER to play Tugger. They still had not worked out all the kinks and also they had to make it a bit more rock video for this. He obviously does not come screaming through a brick wall in the musical. This is just promo.
OMG!! that ending is like thriller SCARYY
@Broadwaymelodie Oh, I am so glad someone else thinks this too! I thought I was the only one! Makes you wonder what Tim Curry would have done with this.

He was the goat bro.
Oh my goodness it’s rum Tum tugger
What most people have to consider is, Terrence Mann was the first person to play the role on Broadway, and the original westend guy wasn't much like the flashy Tugger. I think that John Partridge owes most of his Tugger influence to Terrence Mann.
Terrance Mann is Theater Gold!
Awsome
Look people! If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all! Also, this was done way before John Partridge was even though about being Rum Tum Tugger! Give the people in the video a break!
He's no John Partridge but he's good!
Nice drum beat
