Especially when it’s still a war zone and people are dying at a rapid pace. Not to mention when you have the vast majority living below the poverty line and still struggling to pay their taxes. There’s still a lot that needs to be changed and it’s starts deeper than just how ‘good’ the building structures look.

If you go around Troost or the paseo on the east side of town some of the building architecture is like nothing we will ever see again. That store with the turret, which you crisscross several times 3:10 - 4: was a family - owned liquor store. The family lived upstairs. The owner was shot dead in a robbery, way around like 1980. It never reopened as a liquor store.

Many of these houses are bigger than mine in rural indiana. When we moved here, we had to rent a uhaul to get all the trash off the property: TVs, small fridge, microwaves, rebar, large cans, etc. Lots of work cleaning it up but it was worth it.
I’m from South Bend but never venture to the east side. Honestly it doesn’t look that bad. Some houses need new paint, new siding, and clean up the yards but that’s about it. It’s not like Gary where you drive on a street and see houses burnt, decayed, or half way demolished.
My great grandparents immigrated to South bend from poland.. back in the 50s and 60s the west side was all polish and Russian. My great grandparents lived on West huron Street. Then my dad grew up on huey. My parents raised me in Mishawaka because crime over on the west side was getting bad.
