agreed! I'm curious... do you think 7x7 would work for more players if multiple copies of the game were bought? that was an idea that literally popped into my head while filming, and it seems viable, no?
If you have 2 game boxes, for sure it works playing 7x7 at 4 players. It's longer, dedicated more to gamers than family, but i like it... and i'm developing some things that way ;-)
I actually bought 2 copies of the game (at only $15 each) and combine them for mega Kingdomino, building a 7x7 layout with 4 players. really adds to the dynamic and strategy of the game now that numbers can appear twice.
I think the game actually shines as a two-player, because of the added control and decisions. And there's also the option to expand your kingdom to 7x7 for when you want a longer game. We love it!
I was interested in this game, but then bought Honshu, which seems very similar. I like the colorful art, but probably don't need both Kingdomino and Honshu since they are so similar. Your thoughts?
Thanks for your reply. I went crazy buying games for Christmas, but once both kids are back at college, my husband and I will be playing 2-player games. Maybe Kingdomino would be our choice for 2 rather than Honshu. We are light (easy), family gamers. Our Christmas additions included Lanterns, Animals on Board, Tokaido, Fresco, New York 1901, Fuse, Roll for It, Cottage Garden, Between Two Cities, Medieval Academy, Glux, and for 2-players, Patchwork, Carcassonne: The Castle and Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small. I really enjoy your reviews. They definitely helped me make my choices for Christmas. Thanks!
I wonder how many people will learn the tiles' layouts by heart, given that the tiles all show individual numbers. Looks like a charming little game, though. One you could teach your six-year old or granny.
what is your impression of it as a Spiel des Jahres nominee, now that it made the final 3? How do you feel this ranks against Magic Maze and Race to El Dorado?
Ricky, you're right in your brief assessment. I love Limes but I play it exclusively solo, where the Karuba-style number calling doesn't happen. In the two-player game, the number-calling method is not nearly as cool as the Kingdomino drafting. But of course in Limes you have four different followers who score in four different ways, Carcassonne style, while in Kingdomino there is only one way to score. But Kingdomino plays 3-4 player whereas Limes doesn't. So in the end, I really like both and I am happy to have them :)
haven't decided, do like it, need to play it more as i don't necessarily have room for it, so might have to get rid of something else to make space on the shelves.
at 2 players, experimented players should try to play on a 7x7 space, using all the dominoes ;-)
agreed!

Whoo, can't wait for this !
the expansion to kingdomino... is kingdomino! (-: It's like a paradox.
bruno cathala congrats on the game of the year, well earned. This one is played often with my family!

This game needs a bag for the tiles.

Its so simple but so intriguing at the same time
This one is an instant classic. Brilliant game.

kingdomino is better for 2p i reckon. honshu is a bit heavier/deeper as well :)

Me and my wife love this game. If she needs to pick a filller, currently this is the one she goes to first.

I'd put the tiles in a bag and pull them out blindly just for the scenario you mention

have not played el dorado, magic maze is comparable... tough call which is the better game
Thanks for the run through Richard. This looks appealing as a game for my partner, I and our 5 year old son.
Making a perfect 5x5 might not be as easy as you think. As you HAVE to place a tile if you can. Which might screw you up in the next round(s).
with 2p though it's much easier because you've got a lot more control over what you're getting :)
How does this compare to Limes?
Limes seems to have a more interesting scoring, but less interesting method of collecting the "tiles".
this is a light gateway game... limes is comparatively much heavier and more complex :)
