A reason why you were having a hard time jumping could be because Unreal Engine(the game engine this game uses) makes it so you will stop jumping when you let go of the space bar.
TL;DR: You stop going up when you let go of the space bar.
I dont know if dave ever changed that in this game, but it is a default thing in the Ue4 starter pack.
