I like that Nolan didn't suddenly become good. He was a monster and an asshole, and now he's an asshole who used to be a monster. It's a believable character progression.

I get how it can feel rushed tho, as much as I like some of the additions to the show as well as the music making certain scenes feel more memorable, I think the reintroduction of Omni Man so quickly makes any character progression feel super rushed for the sake of having him quickly put back into the story. In the comics a lot more happens between Nolan leaving earth and reappearing some of which was frontloaded into season 1 of the show. He was gone for like a year and some change worth of issues so seeing him felt like something long awaited. It's weird because for season 1 I thought I preferred the shows pacing but now I really think the comic nails the stories pace while it's probably the weakest link for the show. Still love the show tho, especially enjoying the idea of putting more emphasis on the mole which was a reveal that just kind of happened in the comic with little to no investigation towards it. Made the reveal feel a bit dull. Curious wether the mole will be the same or not as well, I kind of hope so, but maybe just give them a bit more screen time pre-reveal.

This show is just so well done. Plus, I mean animating a whole new security camera view for Donald to have him watch what happened instead of using season one material like 99% of every other show would be doing. It's the extra effort.

You should consider the aspect given what we know of the Viltrumites that Nolan by default is the nicest one in existence at this point other than Mark. Its kinda sad you cut out his suicide attempt but he is going against thousands of years of conditioning and grooming to get the point he is now, and the second he feels emotions his first resort is to move to violence.
It may be baffling but apparently in the comics Nolan doesn’t even have his suicide attempt he just shows up with his new family. To me this is a huggggge improvement

    • @timr6318
      @timr6318 7 месяцев назад +6

I think they really needed to add that suicide attempt to show that Nolan really is changing and different from all the other Viltrumites. I think they got away with not having it in the comics because there his beatdown of Mark was much less brutal, and there was a lot more that happened between Nolan leaving Earth and reuniting with Mark so it felt like Mark had more time to process.

    • @havok6280

It's actually worse in the comics. Nolan looked for a world to conquer hoping Viltrum would forgive his failure on Earth...

Nolan asking/demanding to Mark "Why do I care about them? I'm not supposed to feel this way, how is this better?" is such an important line for him really.
We watch the show with our human minds, upbringing and hopefully loving and compassion filled hearts. It's essentially impossible for us to know what is really going on in his mind.
He's not a human, he's an alien who is thousands of years old. From a society and people who do not have empathy, love or compassion in their lives. Simply put, they aren't supposed to care. Not about humans who are biologically very similar to them, and least of all about a grasshopper species his people deem inferior.
The mere fact that he is even to take a step back from his conditioning and upbringing to even think let alone ask that question is amazing really. And a testament to what a strong and amazing person Debbie is, just like Art says. Without her, and Mark, Earth would have been lost.
He's still done inexcusable and reprehensible things. Obviously he does not deserve any immediate forgiveness, if any at all. But I think it's important to acknowledge the anomaly that he is.
He's a piece of trash. But he is a very, very fascinating piece of trash.

11:42 This! This is why Robert Kirkman is the master of using violence in story telling, the comic was the same way. The fun and colorful style of the art along with the goofy humor and comic book wackiness make you forget how intense it can get. so when those gory parts do happen it really feels like a gut punch.

Donald is definitely in a weird position where he is clearly very important to Cecil, to the point where he knows Cecil’s security codes and Cecil did SOMETHING to bring him or a copy of him back, but at the same time Cecil leaves him in the dark as to what actually happened to him.

It's very simple with Nolan he's over 2000 years old he's from an empire we're there's no weakness the Viltrumites killed everyone who doesn't believe in the cause so he was indoctrinated but those 20 years on earth did change him he didn't apologize because honestly that wouldn't have fixed or solved anything he could never return to earth and with how long they live 20 years really isn't nothing

    • @thegaminglion90
      @thegaminglion90 7 месяцев назад +3

Exactly, if you put it into context then it actually speaks volumes how much he actually cared about mark and debbie. Even though he said some messed up things and killed a ton of people on earth, that small amount of time in his life span was enough to stop him from killing mark, and even make him feel guilt for doing that, not to mention cause him to abandon his mission.

  • @havok6280

Without Nolan's help, the Viltrumites were going to Earth anyway. Now at least he has Nolan's books and his brother.

On the scale of average morality, Nolan is irredeemable. In terms of Viltrimites, he's already done far more then anyone else on his planet.
I think I have a soft spot for villains trying to better themselves. Even if they stumble often, I appreciate that effort is being made.

Just want to point out maybe don't have sex with a grasshopper is the same line of thought as the viltrumites. Nolan was a fascist genocidal monster, having consensual sex with a member of another species is only one of his many crimes if we uphold the the standards of species purity that the Viltrumites do. Nolan's willingness to defy the fascist social rules of his people is a good thing even if the celerity with which he does so is fucked up

  • @jzi4

I think that Eve and her father are just two extremes at opposite ends.
Eve definitely needs to mature more and realize that her father is right about her powers being dangerous and should be used more responsibility. Otherwise people could die.
Her father needs to mature more and realize that Eve does have these powers and has a responsibility to the rest of humanity. If he wasn't so bent on trying to make her normal then Eve would be more open to listening to him when it comes to things like making random parks on empty lots or completely bypassing construction workers and hurting people.
I think that's were they're going with both of these characters.
They're both very stubborn and need to meet in the middle.

I've been waiting for this reaction! Alycia does it so well and her empathy and sympathy and reasoning for her emotional pull are the reasons she's my favorite. She loves these characters and feels for them so much!
I think with Nolan it's important to remember the length of his indoctrination with the Viltrum Empire. He's lived thousands of years and faced the threat of death by other Viltrumites no doubt being how brutal his upbringing would have been with the Viltrumites essentially purging themselves of weakness as they saw it. Then his 20 years on Earth did something to him, made him care, and his battle with Mark was a desperate attempt to reaffirm his position in the empire. Ultimately he couldn't and abandoned his post. I'm not saying what he did was right by any means, but his position isn't surprising given how much indoctrination he faced on Viltrum. I'm truly hoping for more of his character progression and that his books have information that will help Mark.

Nolan has grown up in a place where more or less EVERYBODY (alive, not executed) are behaving in this abusive, power-hungry way. That's the norm.
Think of some things that is within the socially acceptable things on earth (killing living, feeling animals for food despite no nutritional need, doing nothing about the large portion of the population living in extreme poverty simply because they were born into it, etc. etc.).
Listen, Nolan is an asshole, I'm not even saying he should be forgiven by his former family he so severly abused and lied to, but all I'm saying is that at some point what matters is what you are doing/are most likely to do in the future, not what you have done. Evil and good are just concepts, but actions are not. It seems to me, he will most likely do more good/neutral than evil in the future.

The seed of love is growing inside of him, and thousands of years of Viltrumite culture is trying to snuff it out of him, his growth as a character is one of the greatest in Invincible.
Love and empathy are nonexistent in Viltrumite Culture.

The Donald mystery is kinda overdone because in the comics he was a cyborg from day 1, so all this walking on egshells feels too contrived and unecesary
Same for the Eve mysery train, she has her low points but not at that moment, she was actually very well put together and her use of her powers for civillian use actually yielded results
That and Amber being presented as all reasonable and balanced is a continued annoyance, as she was supposed to be about to breakup with Mark
