Alcoholics Anonymous the book has not lost its Edge because it hasn't changed. Why hasn't it changed? Because it works! It is the key for long-term happy sobriety.
However the fellowship has lost its Edge because in it's early days, members insisted that the new member work the steps immediately.
These days, in meetings there's a lot of sitting around and talking about the problem and not so much the solution.
In the early days of Alcoholics Anonymous the newcomer would come through the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous a beaten down person at death's doorstep... willing to do ANYTHING to get sober .
These days, they go to a treatment center where they are filled with vitamins , horse therapy, and three delicious meals a day for 30, 60, or 90 days.
When they come out of the treatment center they physically FEEL better but they are told "you got to go to meetings."
Why would anybody want to go to meetings or work the 12 steps after they feel better?
Meanwhile, nothing was done about the mental obsession and this is a recipe for dry drunkenness ( also known as untreated alcoholism) This only leads to a return to drinking.
This is why the success rate was 75% in the old days.

Very few people can afford to live permanently in treatment. There is nowhere else to really

Yes. Totally agree. But not just the mental obsession is not being treated. It's primarily the spiritual disease of resentment that is left untreated if the steps are not done with a sponsor through the Big Book. The spiritual malady remains.

addicts and alcoholics are cousins. that's why we have znarcotics anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. They are not the same. If an heroin addict quits heroin and has an alcoholic problem he or she is welcome in AA to help another heroin addict/alcoholic not to mark out an alcoholic on their drug relapse.
