  • This is my commute home, "Northern Route," because it entails a north loop to add more miles and hills.
It's quite a bit different from the previous (Southern) route I posted. Even more hills, lots of things to look at.
This route is 21.66 miles long, with 1,244 feet of elevation gain. Average speed was 15.2mph. This ride is lots of work, but it is also very fun.
There are times the speedometer seems to jump high and low, and perhaps this is due to varying GPS signal.
The GoPro battery dies a couple of miles from home, so the video ends rather abruptly.
Just a few things to look for:
24:28 Fun but sketchy downhill! Mile 5.6
38:00 Fun, fast downhill! Mile 8.2
1:12:30 Fun, fast stretch! Mile 15.9
1:15:32 Fun stretch with speed. Will the red van driver see me? I was ready on the brakes. Mile 16:9
    Can you find more?

In the center top left, is that measuring the angle or grade of the hills you are riding on? Because it seems like the camera isn't showing the inclines and declines justly.

Haha, you’re absolutely right, Michael. Yes, that is the percent gradient. Most people don’t know that Kansas City is actually a very hilly area! The camera certainly does not do it justice. It is quite a workout, and when we moved here eight years ago, I had to embrace the hills if I wanted to ride! There is no way to avoid them! So I learned to love them.
By the way, you’ve probably figured out in the center bottom left is the pedal RPM, and the center figure with a lightning bolt is the amount of power, measured in watts, I’m producing as I pedal. Speed is obviously center top right.

@@mcpastor63 Can you charge your phone as you pedal? I watched the actor Ed Begley Jr. toasts bread in a toaster while using a bicycle to generate the electricity a few years ago on the channel Green Planet. It took him a half an hour to make two pieces of toast, that's just silly. You know he just did it for the cameras. The next day when the camera crew had left he probably just made toast with the toaster in the wall socket. Although his roof was full of solar panels.

@@michaelgoodman1348 yes it would be possible to recharge a phone or something. I’ve seen online someone set up that way. As you probably remember, bicycle light generators were popular in the day. Such generators do sap power, and speed from a cyclists efforts. I prefer all the power I’m generating to go toward forward progress :)
