I’m a musician and songwriter. Thank you so much Trevor for being light to this extremely important issue. Streaming platform is devastating for creators while the executives running the company take the money. And if an artist doesn’t play the Spotify game they suffer in other ways for it. I pray there is an equitable solution in the near future.

I buy the vinyls, I go to the shows, I buy merch, all of that. I'm glad for services like Spotify that allow me to know whether I like an artist or not before I go spending my hardearned money.

thats never going to happen simply because genuine labels invest in those artists and basically pay for their expenses then more than half of those artists never make it to those levels and those who do can get money touring but these labels need a return on investment, no label will ever sue an artist for failing to make it you wont ever hear of that but incases where the labels dont do anything for the artist, then thats an issue

@@quas3728 the streaming model is actually simple if your music gets played, you get paid but artists get paid 20% or less because the labels take out 80%+ of those earnings since they invest their money into you and if you happen to be an independent artist you may get paid better but its not easy to grow big to where it will make a difference, artists have to learn to monetise themselves, sell merch boook tours etc coz thats where they will make money

My partner is an aspiring musician who just released her first album, and I cannot stress enough just how awful streaming services treat their artists and how little they pay them. Just to give you a heads up, my partner's most listened to song has about 6000 listens, and based on Spotify's payment plan, that has netted my partner around $18 USD. In order to make a decent amount of money, you need millions of listens across a few songs. Even then, it's still not a great means of income, especially when you consider factors like consistency.
That's why I have personally decided to buy CDs and vinyls of the artists I enjoy the most. Literally pre-ordered Jon Batiste's new album in both CD and vinyl format to show my support and give an artist I love more direct money, because CD sales and vinyl sales give musical artists way more money than a digital purchase and especially more than streaming.
If you love your artists, especially up-and-coming ones, buy from them physically. Many artists are starting to sell their own CDs on their own sites, so keep that in mind. Try to avoid buying off popular platforms like Amazon, because they also take a decent cut.

That's not true at all. There's a lot of indie acts that don't belong to a dedicated label who only vehicle to promote their music is streaming services unless they have their own dedicated websites. Nowadays, artists are wising up and using labels for marketing and distribution and those in a label situation have the option to renegotiate the terms on which they're paid. However, for a large majority of artists who are still trying to break into the industry and don't have a record label contract, their primary source of income (outside of streaming) would be merch and shows and anything they've done independently, which still points to the streaming service, not the label.

I still find it weird that people judge and sometimes even make fun of me because I still buy CDs.
The problems with streaming platforms not paying artists properly is known for a very long time. So you support your favourite musicians more if you actually buy a physical copy. Also, when you're more into historical music, the booklets inform you about songs and their context. Pop music usually uses booklets that have all the lyrics of the songs in that album.
The only industry I'm aware of that takes full advantage of this is the K-pop industry. (And they're known for ingenious, greedy marketing campaigns)
The only thing I'm really glad of that streaming platforms exist is the easy access to music from all around the globe. And it's often time the only access for me as getting CDs from those musicians is either really difficult, expensive or simply impossible.

I found so much music I never would have found if it weren't for Napster. It let me go down a music rabbit hole that would have cost a fortune otherwise. As a result of finding those artists, I went to so many awesome shows in other cities that I wouldn't have ever thought to go to. I go down spotify rabbit holes all the time now.

Except, most of them don't have the right to their own music, the label does. Thats why indie artists tends to make more even with less streaming number.

This is why I preferred to use Tidal. It seems to be a better compromise between availability of songs, payout for the artists and the price. To be honest, buying the songs would be an even better option for me but I don't have the money. This is also a problem social justice for the customers, for the people who works every day and still have financial problems. The honest truth about streaming services is that it's temporary so much cheaper for the customers while the younger generations got less and less money. If I would buy all the important songs I like, it would take years to collect all that money.
And this isn't meant as justification. My behaviour is still bad and egoistic. It's meant to be an explanation why streaming services become so popular and why it's a problem for artist to earn enough money.

I think it's been about 15 years since I asked AFI if they could post a Paypal direct donation button on their site. I'm probably not going to buy CDs, since I was living out of my car and my CDs were all damaged from heat, and I'm not going to download stuff 15 years ago. Where to put it? Phones didn't have internet for most regular people. But I'd like to toss them a few bucks for how much I liked them, especially since I knew that they'd made *nothing* from the CDs I DID buy. I just want to hand an artist I like $20 sometimes without 40 people in the middle a cut.

Streaming services aren't the problem the access to music they provide has an ameliorating effect on society that can't be denied. This all just circles back around to long term problems of the record industry giving little to no care about structuring deals that are fair and mutually beneficial with their artists.

It is most likely already mentioned, but Spotify was essentially created by record labels to get around royality clauses in their contracts. So they do not get paid as one entity, but they get paid other way, but they cut out artists from getting most gains. Tidal and Apple are at least a bit better.
I am not gonna into why it is way it is. It has been said way too many times.
If you want to support your artists, buy their CDs and merch and go to their concerts.

I really don't consider it piracy when I replenished my collection, some of which had been bought 3 or 4 times (from vinyl to cassette to CD), that some a-hole(s) decided was theirs. Whether you're an artist or do lawn work, your labor is more than likely underpaid it's value. This needs to stop, in every business sector. There is more then enough wealth between a ridiculously small amount of the total Humans on this planet, enough to pretty much solve a high percentage of all problems we all face. With more than enough left over for them to still be rich, and for the efforts to be self sustaining, or perpetual. If not outright actual permanent solutions and not just band aids.

What do you mean, find a way? There already is a way, creators don't want to do it. It's literally just credit them and give them a portion of the money earned from those videos. You'd need contracts and accounting to actually do it so most don't have the means and it's also not even that much, RUclipsrs don't make that much from views, the rich ones make their money from sponsorships and they're not sharing sponsor money..

Spotify is always advertising promoted artists to me but I never click the ads and it's always the same 4 artists that I just don't want to listen to and never smaller artists that sound similar to what I've liked. There is no algorithm that suggests the artists and music followed by artists that you like either. I do a better job at finding new music by clicking around random stuff than Spotify does at showing me new artists.

Timely post of an older segment (I’m assuming this was recorded around the time of the Covid lockdown). I’m not sure if singers, songwriters, or musicians have a union or unions. If not, it sounds like they need to organize and put pressure on streaming services to compensate creators fairly like the actors and writers are doing in Hollywood … also mostly caused by compensation for streaming.

As NFTs become easier, artists need to band together and take their art back. The artist should make the most off their music no matter where it is played and used. I have been buying artists music in vinyl form for a while now. I still listen mostly on streaming platforms but its cool to own it physically in some form, vinyl is cool for the artwork and colored vinyl is my thing now.

The contracts that the artists are signing are the problem. They get trapped into a situation where the choices are to sign a bad contract or not having their music on those services, or with their record label, who is taking the majority of the money. Streaming made music easier for the listeners but it wasn't designed to benefit anyone other than the companies that own the streaming apps.

Blame the labels, not the streaming services. Even if u buy physical copies most of the money goes to the labels anyway so buying physical accomplishes literally nothing but making it less convenient. Place blame correctly.
