I don’t see enough people complimenting how he flawlessly transitions from Gentle Madman into Out of Kindness through Ideal and the Real. That was a phenomenal decision if you ask me, and executed just as such
So... I dunno if anyone watched the video of the music director counting down his favorite palace themes and why. But he gave a really good bit of I believe personal opinion, maybe I'm wrong, on his Futaba review. He mentioned that the guitar used in that theme is the instrument that can come closest to sounding or feeling like a human crying. What you did here was basically recenter the theme around that, and it's absolutely drop dead gorgeous, like, this could have been the original and it would've fit just as well. I hope you're proud of this cover because I think it's absolutely masterful, especially since you managed to keep the sorrowful tone of the original all the way through, which is no small feat, at least, it's something I don't see alot of other musical artists go out of their way to do that.
Wow, thank you so much! I just watched that part of the video you mentioned, and yeah I definitely agree with what he said about guitar, especially in the context of the game. Maintaining the original's tone was very important to me too - I'm glad you appreciated that! :D
I like that kind of comparison, because it touches on why I love the horns in this piece so goddamn much. Something about them just feels like the sheer embodiment of *sorrow.*
I think the saddest thing of all is that even if you went along with his plans, his world was completely doomed from the beginning. It was riddled with contradictions, and you could quickly tell just from walking around talking to NPCs that granting one person's wish often meant making someone else miserable or confused in the process. How do you resolve impossible relationships that are wished for, but could never work? Are men supposed to leave their wives to go be with some random woman they've barely ever talked to, destroying their families in the process because of one selfish wish? True, that happens in real life, but under his system, he'd also try to somehow grant this abandoned family happiness. Cool, but is some other random person then supposed to uproot his or her life, just to fill the hole left by the first guy leaving? It's just an endless cascade of contradictions leading to more contradictions, and in the end, you'd get something with just as much pain and suffering as what you started with, if the system doesn't simply collapse in on itself at some point. Even if actualization occurs, and he becomes literal god, and all of his changes are permanent, all of these fundamental problems exist until you strip away the humanity from the humans, at which point you also strip away the very happiness he was trying to achieve. Anyways, TL;DR This cover be friggin awesome, and friggin sad at the same time
I think most of the problems you bring up can be addressed with on single line from one of the Shadows in the Palace: "Happiness derived from the suffering of others is, in fact, unhappiness." This line comes up for one of the answers in the psychiatric exam room, and it seriously addresses almost all of the hangups i had, with Maruki's reality potentially granting the wishes of evil people. So, for these people, they would ostensibly receive the "next best thing" that doesn't involve any cruelty towards others (as seen with Madarame), or if they're completely beyond saving, like Shido was, they are simply put in jail to make everyone ELSE happy.
Remember he doesnt complete his world until the deadline. The more you wait the less npcs seem to be bewildered. He eventually manages to create a world where everyone is happy...or at least believes they are. Maruki is no hero, no villain, just a man realizing his desires
Damn, you can hear the desperation, madness, and grief in these. The originals already did that quite well, but this recontextualizes the songs themselves, making them less oppressive and more manic. Love the interpretation.
I’ve always interpreted Gentle Madman as Maruki trying to convince you that he will bring prosperity, like a light at the end of a tunnel, and Out of Kindness being his frustration with you when you don’t accept his reality. He is granting everyone, including you, infinite happiness, wouldn’t you be frustrated? And you encapsulated these themes perfectly, good fucking job man, and I wish you good luck in the rest of your music ventures.
I always thought of Out of Kindness as more of a statement than his repeated offers for you to accept, that he’s doing it out of kindness and he is going to go through with it
I've always seen Out of Kindness's name having 2 meanings. 1: Maruki is doing what he is doing out of the kindness in his heart 2: Maruki is tired and is out of kindness to give
As certain as I am that the game means "Maruki's doing it out of kindness"... I kinda wanna see Maruki being out of kindness as in "You had your chance."
I've always seen the double meaning as the duality between Maruki and the phantom thieves. Maruki is doing what he's doing out of the kindness in his heart. Joker is there to steal the distorted kindness from his heart. Joker and Maruki have both tried their hardest to resolve their differences peacefully, and at this point it's clear to them both that kindness isn't an option between them.
This, I also have seen the third meaning, which is Out of "Kindness". Maruki didn't do those things out of kindness, he was basically projecting his own inability to deal with the reality after what happened to Rumi. Kindness was what he told himself to justify his goal. So out of kindness would mean that masks are taken down and Joker can now see real Maruki, the one that's angry and is doing this because of Rumi, not out of kindness. That was visible so much in the final stages of the fight "Why Rumi!? I have sacrificed EVERYTHING!" and so on, clearly indicating the core of his actions still lied in his own past, which is again confirmed when he's a taxi driver.
a genius, he unterstand the essence of the material from the songs and what persona really is, and playin it how he feels it, its so thoughtful. respect .-)
This is beyond incredible. The last palace of the game is one of my favorite segments in all of gaming history, and this cover encapsulates everything I love about it. Fantastic work
I always say that both "Gentle Madman" and "out of kindness" have dual meaning in their names, which somewhat transfers to their songs as themes clashing directly, especially in their context in the game. This song completely nails in passing that dual meaning in the song. That's all I have to say. Great cover
1:58 - for anyone looking for that sick transition. This is a masterpiece. And it still has me sometimes crack a tear and bob my head all at the same time 👏🏽
This remix is so good to the point where I refuse to go back to the original version, you did such a fantastic job merging the two songs, while also throwing in Ideal and the Real in there too. You also managed to keep the dreadful and sorrowful feeling the song originally had, and when you get the "out of kindness" portion, you can feel his frustation and madness growing more and more apparent. This cover honestly sounds like a 1980's rock song, which really works for his song. A little over a year later and its still so frickin good, hope you do more Persona stuff in the future.
I think this cover convey much more meaning of the whole third semester, than the original Palace theme. The OG feels so impressive, giving the pure disgust to surroundings and forcing yourself to hate the new reality, while the others track dont, conveying mixed feelings. It has more connection to them and the general atmosphere , so I definitely, somehow, like it more than original Gentle Madman.
I don't know if anyone else feels that way, but it's always hype for me when covers start with a new part, before going to the original track's beginning.
I can easily say this is my favorite videogame cover ever. I listen to it so much, the desperation, the sadness of the guitar reminds me of led zepplin/pink floyd in a way. I love how i can hear elements of both the palace themes and marukis theme and i adore every second 10000/10 cover
Honestly almost getting Pink Floyd vibes from this. Saw the pink floyd experience live at Ozora in 2019 and it had a very similar atmosphere. Amazing work!
You can really tell how this was inspired by Buckethead and I absolutely love it! My favourite song from Buckethead is Sail on the Soothsayer and this might beat it! Loved it, well done
I've only recently discovered your channel from your Specialist in persona 5 style video and I'm genuinely speechless. This cover really just portrays Maruki so well. The original OST is amazing of course, one of my favorites in the game, but this cover really sums it up. The first few seconds remind me of a classical kind of melody you would hear in a zombie apocalypse movie or game (it gives massive Project Zomboid vibes) which is so oddly fitting for how Maruki's ideal world looks like. The sad, solemn tone along with the guitar you use...you can truly hear the desperation, the sadness, the helplessness. Then it transitions so beautifully, adding so much to this amazing masterpiece. What a cover, seriously. I'm stunned. I'm so grateful I found your channel. This is incredibly phenomenal
You made a fantastic cover that both changes the sound but stays true to the original. Fantastic work! The transition was so seamless and the solos so sick that I've found myself playing your cover while I practice the song.
okay so i think im addicted to this fucking piece. i was gonna listen to something else but i realized how hard this went and just thought yeah ill just listen to this. i genuinely love how you covered out of kindness, i just find it so good. thanks for this man, you made my day.
there is reason our lives are not like jigsaw puzzles and keeps on changing ,where as his world would just fit in a way and thats it. this game just showed us how the world finding an equilibrium is actual the end and that change in this world is very necessary but is always frowned upon. this game always embraced the message of "Don't fear change" and its quite necessary in this current world and time. Overall this game was nice way of opening several minds to a better path
Hey Rohan, we went to IB in a school in R.H. Super cool your channel got recommended to me by YT, I'm actually also really into persona stuff now and I'm studying game design, graduating soon. Anyway you're super talented and I've really enjoyed listening to your stuff. Hope you're doing well!
Yooo Jessica! Didn't expect this :O Really great to hear from you and it's dope that you're pursuing game design. I'm doing good - thanks for checking out my stuff!
SPOILERS! (Duh?) When reading comments about Maruki's reality, I usually see people talking about the contradictions in the world, but what needs to be realized is that Maruki hasn't fully actualized the world, so of course, he can't fix everyone yet. But when the full actualization comes, AKA when you accept Maruki's offer, it's implied he'd be able to make everyone happy. There's no deeper story past that. If you accept Maruki's reality, everyone is truly happy, but your choices aren't really your own. It's up to you, the player, to decide if having your fate decided by someone else is worth it for eternal happiness.
While his plan is pretty good on paper. In practice. It doesn't work out so well. There will be so many contradictions. If he truly wants to give everyone their perfect world, how would that work for divorced kids for example who just want their parents to be back together. Meanwhile the parents might wish to get in a relationship with someone else and move on. Who's wish holds more value? Or does he just try to find the closest thing for everyone? But then that will barely change anything. Because so many people know so many other people and wish for different things. To the point where one wish granted might effect so many people badly. Leaving very few actually happy people. And most of the world just annoyed and sad that it's not them who got everything they wanted. So... does he truly care about happiness? Or is he just doing what he thinks is right on the people he feels like helping?
I don’t see enough people complimenting how he flawlessly transitions from Gentle Madman into Out of Kindness through Ideal and the Real. That was a phenomenal decision if you ask me, and executed just as such

Jesus fucking Christ, the third semester just became even more depressing than it already was.
great comment
I got this weird theory that the third semester changed everyone's life, not just game characters and NPC's but Us as players too.
