    Fidgeting is just the natural reality of how humans are meant to live and rest. People see it as a negative thing, but really sitting motionless in one position is only possible with hyper-normal comfortable modern furniture. You're supposed to be constantly moving when you're awake. As they say, the best position is the next position. The reality of floor living is that your'e going to be changing positions every few minutes. That's a good thing.

      It’s interesting because I’ve been reading up in prep to begin trying my hand at chairmaking, and I’ve pretty universally found that the best chairs have either no “saddle” or a very shallow one. Saddle on a chair is the depression carved out upon the seat for your rump. Chairs with a very deep, conforming saddle sound like they’d be more comfortable, but in fact they restrict you more from the natural shifting that your body wants to do when you sit. A chair with very shallow or no saddle to it allows for this movement the most, and so make the most comfortable chairs. This coupled with considerations taken for angles at various points all work together to form a surprisingly comfortable wooden chair, no cushioning required, even for longer sits!

    Hanging is the BEST chiropractic doctor. It opens up the discs and re-aligns the spine. It's great for people who get slipped discs, bulged disc, or worst, pinched nerves in the spine, or just people who lift a lot of heavy things day to day. It was one of the exercises that helped me re-align the spine and start healing the spine. My dad even built a pull up bar in his back yard, that's how beneficial it is.

    • @Runner8617

      I STRONGLY support the purchase of rings or any pull up equipment for EVERYONE, but especially people who suffer from spine injuries or pinched nerves. It was a game changer for me and my dad. And much less $ than going to a chiropractor or surgeon who have the potential of making things WORST if they are too harsh or don't know what they are doing. And yes, I've heard of chiropractors who have injured their clients and made them crippled.

    Incorporating movement into your daily routine is so much easier than trying to carve out exercise time. I have a floor bed and a floor desk, and I also have a freestanding pull-up bar. I do draw the line at living and dining rooms though for my guests' sake.

    • @natashatheresa

      Yes I agree it’s easier to incorporate movement in daily routine! For me, in my old house I used to have one couch but then also a pillow mountain so it was the best of both worlds for the living room. In my kitchen I actually had a regular height dining table and then a smaller floor dining table off to the side depending on our mood. I might do something similar but for now we do have some regular dining seating if we end up having guests. But I don’t have many people I’d invite over anyway so I guess we are fine lollllllllll

Over the course of months I came to the point where I wanted and was able to stand eight hours, the whole work shift. Was wonderful. I actually think standing is better than sitting on the ground. I've been doing furniture free living for a few years, too. I'm thinking of going back to chairs, if I'm honest, because sitting on the floor is really starting to hurt my ankles (they press into the ground when I sit). I also didn't foresee the problem of the dog snoozing in the space directly in front of my desk, when I need to use it. That's a non issue when the space in front of your desk has a chair on it. I'm also thinking of putting in, not a bed, but a stage about the size of a plywood sheet, with storage below it. This would be my new sleeping place at night. I want this because 1. I'm often at risk of being stepped on, while sleeping on the floor. and 2. I've had knee injuries in the past, and now am getting older. Either issue by itself is reason to consider occasional mobility issues, where a raised "bed" would be a lifesaver! That said, furniture free living has eliminated my back pain, improved some neglected muscles, as well as my posture (I keep my tv/computer screen at face level), and kept me limber. Overall I'm very glad I did this!

    Just fyi, try not to stay seated for too long with your legs crossed! Over time it shortens the muscles of the inner thigh and can lead to a change in weight distribution when standing, which can be painful for the feet (i learned this the hard way 😔)

    Great video - I've been floor sleeping for about 3 and a half months now and such a positive improved sleep - and have been floor sitting and also got myself an affordable table to use as a floor desk/table - your body prompts you when to move - and you do change your position when floor sitting where as when sitting in chair for long periods you are limited to what change you can make - more standing is also good

    I randomly stumbled upon your video and really love the way you present yourself-- it's really authentic and refreshing!
    I do have to say though, as someone who has a lot of back problems, many of my chiropractors have said that sitting cross legged on the floor actually isn't good for you because the pressure accumulates at the base of your spine/lower back and there's not as much blood flow going through your legs over long periods of time. I imagine moving around definitely helps but I hope no one in the comments gets dissuaded from a standard setup with a chair as well. Your setup honestly looks fun, and I would try it if I didn't have so many issues myself.

    • @natashatheresa
      @natashatheresa  6 месяцев назад +1

      I truly appreciate your kind and thoughtful comment! You are right, for sure, if I were to sit cross legged for a prolonged period of time it would be no bueno. I definitely move around like every 1-2 minutes, even as I make this comment hahaha. It's crazy too b/c I have actually had a lot of back problems especially after I had my kiddos, luckily i lived next door to my chiro so I could visit him regularly throughout my 30s hahahaha.
      But I felt like, perhaps there were other things I needed ot look into which could be the source of my back pain. Personally, for me, I started exploring barefoot shoes and over the course of a year, my knees, ankles, and my lower back all seemed to get stronger. my lingering back pain faded into distant memory when it had been a companion for decade. It made me think more intentionally about how i move my body and how everything is connected from my toes all the way up to my head. I could write a whol eessay about how little changes I've made over the years have produced the limber 40 year old you see in this video LOLLLLLLL. of course, results may vary and one thing doesn't work for all, but as I sit here on my newly acquired zafu cushion, with my legs stretched undearneath my desk, i can see how it's helping my posture. In a few moments I'll switch it up as well.
      I realized that part of my issue was i was spending sooo much time sitting - i would drive for many hours each week for commutes and for church purposes, I'd sit at my office desk hours on end barely moving. I had to find ways to counteract this, and while I worked out regularly and lifted weights, it really wasnt' enough to undo my normal actions throughout each day. So that is why I started modifying how i do things, at least the things within my control.
      I thank you for being here and for sharing your knowledge as well! Ideally, I want to be able to do a mix of floor sitting, sitting at a chair, AND standing. That would be ideal to just keep mixing it up hehehe!

I think the main reason i haven't committed to giving it a shot is I'm way too scared of bugs and somehow got it in my head that if I just Elevate Myself From The Floor then somehow it will protect me? Even though bugs aren't even actually a big deal and any bug that could crawl onto my futon could also crawl onto my bed with .2% more determination.

I didnt used to have a chair for a long time, but recently bought a cheap office chair except I threw away the leg... I sleep on the floor as well, I think a bed frame is just waste of space overall. When I started uni I realized that sitting on a chair too long to study makes my tailbone hurt so I moved to sitting on a mattress and using those tables to eat food in bed as a table and it really helped with the back pain. I use those plastic chair forms with a back to lean against something or my back hunches over.

    Get the gym rings. I've had a set for years and Idk why everyone's first step in fitness is a giant mega gym thingy. I used to have a 3 room apt with space for a freestanding squat rack, but now I'm in a studio. I bought one of those Vevor folding pullup bars to hang my rings on and I'm very happy with this setup.

    I just realized I have this very desk(from Target)! When my daughter broke my bed years ago, I threw it out and slept on the floor for 2 years. It took about a month to get used to sleeping on my foldable futon cushion.
    Question: what difference, if any do you see with sitting at your desk, versus the alternative of using a standing desk? Do you think you would get more tired standing? Would the circulation be the same?
    With a standing desk you could use a desk treadmill or incorporate some other stretch, calisthenic, or exercise while standing.
    Also, why did you choose this over, let's say a yoga ball or those low sitting chairs ( I think you sit on your forelegs?)

    • @natashatheresa
      @natashatheresa  6 месяцев назад

      These are great questions! I’m actually doing a followup video so I can talk about most of these but, for reference my hubby has a standing desk and I used to do the standing too.. more of a makeshift version at my job. But I didn’t always remember to stand, same with my hubby hahahaha. So the default would still be office chair lol.
      At my office job though (I work 2-3 hours there, 2-3x a week so not a lot), I do have a yoga ball which I like bc sometimes I cross my legs and balance on it hahahaha. I do still stand sometimes too but it’s a regular desk so I have to like make all kinds of adjustments which is annoying lolll
      I think that’s cool to use a desk treadmill or something but $$$$ hahahaha.
      I am active in every day life also, I like to play on the playground or run around with the kids, and do hikes.
      When I’m sitting on the ground I do get up a lot as well.
      I don’t know that I would want to sit on my forelegs all the time with one of those types of low chairs but I do also sit on my forelegs sometimes on the cushions.
      But I’ll try to go more into depth with things in my next video that I’m making thanks so much!

    I completely vibe with the sitting on the floor thing, and constantly adjusting your position! However, I do want to bring up something that is based just on my own experience. I've been sitting cross-legged pretzel-style most of my life, and even though it feels like the most natural and comfortable position to be in, over the course of my life it's led to some pelvic instability (probably because even though I often switch the leg that's "in front", I have a preference for one way). And that has caused back problems later in life. I'm now actively trying to address this issue, but it's not easy when I've spent 20 years conditioning my body to adjust a certain way! I'm not against sitting on the floor by any means, but I just think it's good to be aware that this kind of issue can also come up when doing it long-term. Anyway, looking forward to checking your other videos and what sort of experience you've had with these furniture adjustments!

So know when I rearranged the bedroom I sit on a carpet on the floor with 2 types of portable mini-desks for my notebook to choose and have a giant teddy-bear as a support for my back against a shelf (or just a giant pillow😅).
