    It's not just the sleep, think about the movement about having to get up and lay down. When you think about a bed, you don't need anything more than to fall into it or 90 degree movement to get up. To stand up and lay down daily, it's movement outside the standard 90 degree. It's increased muscle and flexibility. When you study on the floor, sleep on the floor, eat on the floor, add up all that movement and flexibility over a lifetime and it adds up.

I do really regret that I didn’t contribute to my 401k for about 5 years in my 20s because I believed my wealthy father when he told me I’d be coming into a trust fund and didn’t need to invest. I sleep on futon or even thinner things than that for 3 years almost now. I have EDS, I was searching a way to sleep without being more broken in the morning than after a day of walking, getting in train and subway. I just like you find videos on youtube speaking about florr sleeping, and thought, why not? After all the majority of humanity still sleep without matresses right now and it was even more common in history. And I don't regret it, every time I'm not at home I'm broken by the beds of peoples even medical one. Futon is a life saviour for me with my pains that c'ant be solve by the medecines. I will try desk floor too, but right now I'm in the middle of moving flat, so I'm very eager to be able to try it.

    it's good and fun to sleep on the floor unless you're overweight or have arthritis. Also cannot recommend if you have acid reflux or hiatal hernia. Also you really REALLY need to roll your bed up off the floor every day, because otherwise the moisture that your mattress absorbs from your body overnight wont have a chance to evaporate from between the floor and the mattress, and you get mold (in the best case the mold is on your mattress, in the worst case, it's both on your mattress and your floor.) Incidentally, you can also sleep on a smooth hard surface without sleeping on the floor, by getting a wooden slab or similar to sleep on. That way all the dirt from the floor isn't always in your bed, and you get storage space under your bed. It's also better to sleep on if you live in colder climates, because that floor is going to be cold during the winter and give you a UTI.

    Real question … bugs? So my main hesitation with being all the way on the floor is being in the path of the floor dwellers. I cant control what’s in the building and yard so the occasional roach strolls thru or my neighbors have mice. Worse, hotels. That carpet is teaming with mites and stuff. I am already completely icked out by hotels as a concept, the carpeted floors cannot be cleaned. How do you get started without buying a wooden platform etc? Suggestions?

    • @natashatheresa
      @natashatheresa 4 дня назад

      Hi! Thankfully I don't have a pest problem where I am, aside from an occasional ant, but maybe for places that do, you could instead look at a lower bed frame or something. I think some people on here suggested Ikea frames and then placing a solid plywood base inside rather than the more pliable slats and such. then you still get the benefits of the harder surface without being on the actual floor? I know The Futon Shop has some pretty nice options if you are in the US. And yeah i dont' tink i can deal with floor sleeping at a hotel just yet LOL..

  • @yellowzora

    I slept on the floor or really hard surfaces for 2 1/2 years, and my sleep was never better. Then I bought a house, with a mattress that is a "compromise" between me wanting something rock hard and my poor boyfriend wanting a feather to sleep on - and both our sleep has gotten bad xD I can't get rid of the bed since we use it for storage too, I don't want to get a new mattress that is super duper expensive as we would need it to be two opposite ends. And we don't have another room I could move into, so until we move again, which could be many years from now, I feel like I'm stuck in this situation. But maybe some clever solution will come along, you never know :D

    I‘ve been switching between sleeping on the floor and in a bed for 7 years now and I always prefer the floor. My only problem is that I get silent acid reflux when sleeping on the floor. It took me ages until I found out that it did not come from nutrition but from the flat, hard surface. Have you experienced something similar? I am really desperate to find a solution for that. It did make me more stiff than i usually feel , and i had a strange kneepain that i never have when i biked to work today, but im also open to "get used to it" but id like to do it the correct way! I also feel so strange like im upside down when i lay my head down without a pillow when im on my back. Im sure there is a ton of information out there, its just hard to know where to start.

    • @natashatheresa
      @natashatheresa 4 дня назад

      Thanks so much for the input! I did find that when I was on a regular mattress and tried not using a pillow, it didn’t really work and I felt almost upside down too. It really has to be more of a firmer surface, but also, some people have suggested the buckwheat pillows, which is something I haven’t explored yet, but i know from sitting on one, they are good to mold so I imagine you could do the same around your head compared to a regular pillow and shape it in a way that still keeps your spine aligned. Just thinking out loud but yah, I’m on it!!

    Great video! Through most of. my 20s and early 30s, I slept on a futon mattress on the floor. I always slept well, and it definitely keeps you far more mobile. When I first moved to Thailand a decade ago, my first few places were furnished and came with beds that sat on fairly low frames. The height wasn't the issue; the mattress was, way too soft and springy. when I got my first unfurnished place I switched back to a futon-style mattress, but on a frame that sits just above the floor (about 3cm) which allows airflow and makes it so I don't have to fold the mattress up every day. Just a convenience thing for me really. The reduction in all-cause mortality as a result of increased mobility has been my primary focus, being in my mid-40s now has me paying closer attention to this sort of stuff. I just got back from a week-long motorbike trip into northern Thailand, on my last night I stayed in my friend's guest house where he had a western-style bed that was not only very high but very soft. I found that I did not rest well at all, and I woke up with a lot of aches and pains compared to other nights sleeping on lower and harder surfaces.

    • @natashatheresa
      @natashatheresa 5 дней назад

      Thanks so much for sharing this! And yes, maintaining our mobility reduces our mortality risk and that too is a driving force for me being 41 now as well. Thanks for sharing your experiences with a low frame! That makes sense to help with air flow!

I am curious if you find that you sleep in the same position all night since making the switch to the floor? when I sleep on a traditional bed and sprung mattress, I will toss and turn all night to find comfortable positions, but when I am sleeping on the floor on my futon mattress, I sleep flat on my back all night and never have to move because I am very comfortable. Do you find the same? My 40s snuck up on me, lol. I am slowly (and my wife would say stubbornly) finding that my body's limits are not what they were a decade ago. having lost a lot of the weight I packed on between 35-45 has helped, but that doesn't change the reality of father time. The idea of the airflow from that low frame is to ensure moisture doesn't build up in the mattress since I am not picking it up every day (cuz I am lazy) The same way a slatted bottom of a traditional bed frame allows airflow in a mattress. I think tatami mats offer some of the same function if your pad is on them, just not to the same degree.

      @@IdeaStudioBKK my sleep tracking ring says I toss and turn 1 or 2 times throughout the night lol. I think for the most part I sleep on my back but sometimes I end up on my side. It’s definitely a lot less movement than when I was in a regular mattress for sure hahaha! I am actually getting a more legit tatami mat shortly, so I’ll see how that goes! We ordered a tatami frame for my mom, the frame is 10 inches off the ground so she isn’t completely on the ground but not too high either, hopefully it will help her to strengthen her lower body again.

      @@natashatheresa I'll be very interested to see how that tatami mat works out! the 10-inch high frame for your mom sounds like a great starting point. Not as high as a Western bed and not on the floor, giving her a good starting point to work with and grow into something lower. That's probably the perfect transition point for most people who have spent a lifetime in a raised bed.

      @@IdeaStudioBKK my mom is open to trying it out, but she knows that if she doesn't want to use it anymore, we'll put her back in a Western bed and we can take the frame for ourself our maybe our daughter hahaha. hopefully though she will be cool with it, and maybe eventually make it all the way to the floor hehe!

    10 weeks ago, I woke up with terrible pain in between my shoulder blades. This is a common occurrence for me. Shoulder pain too because I can’t sleep in my back so I side sleep, and I slump my shoulder forward. Well it was the worst it had been for a while and I knew my bed was the issue. We typically her the firmest mattress avail but after a year, it looses the firmness. So I spent $200 and bought a Japanese futon and it took 2 days for me to feel an improvement. It took 2 weeks to get used to getting in and out of it, cause I’m 43 and already achy. But now, I can get in and out easily and have had zero neck, shoulder back or hip pain. 10/10 would recommend. Trying to get my husband to make the switch but idk if he’s going to haha

    I always like sleeping on the floor. But I prefer a very very very and did I very firm mattress 😂😂😂. I want to get either another floor mattress or just give my aunt the frame to my wooden futon because this mattress is great imo

    try a buckwheat pillow, you can adjust the thickness of it on the fly by moving them around in there!

    I am aobut to start sleeping on a futon since I just moved and didn't want to get a new mattress. Instead, I decided to get a new futon because I have lived years with stiff back, legs, etc. My lack of mobility has led me to being overweight and living perpretually tired. I am about ready to try this. Wish me luck!

      I wish you all the positive juju!! Please let me know in a few weeks how it’s going! Just take it easy though, use assistance as needed so you don’t strain anything as you get used to more range of motion. I am rooting for you!!

    Team No Pillow! But also, not just the cost of a fancy mattress, you also save on the bed frame itself! And then, no more bumping into the corners of the bed! No more stubbed toes!
