An excellent video about the bow drill. I’d say the best on RUclips. Just one very small point: (re 1:16:03) don’t forget you’ve got the spine of your blade to scrape the ridges off. Your don’t have to slice. You can get some really nice (fine) work done with the spine.
Thank you kindly Roger, indeed Craig is an absolute professional at what he does so I was very grateful he allowed me to film this video with him. Many thanks for watching and for the kind words ~Peace~
I've been bow drilling for a while. But watched this again. If you're dim like me or even pretty smart, it doesn't hurt to learn again something that you've already learned. Invariably you will pick up a few new tidbits of information that can be really helpful, and at the very least, you'll learn just one little thing, and that thing can be earth shattering and really improve your ability, or it can be just one more data point, idea, technique in your full range of capabilities around a specific ability. So, even if you are bow drill master, watch this video! You'll likely learn something, and if you've been doing this for 30 years and you really are the ultimate bow drill master, and there is nothing more to learn about bow drilling (unlikely!), you likely are teaching friends and family, little ones etc. on camp outs or just in the back yard, and you can learn a thing or two or ten from Craig about HOW to teach bow drilling, as he is very competent but also a very good teacher. Just my three cents. Thank you Zed for making all of these videos for us, you are a prince. Thank you Craig for teaching these traditional skills to a couple new generations now, and for being willing to work with the rather odd Zed :), to share your valuable knowledge with THOUSANDS of Zed's viewers. From just one of those thousands, let me tell you personally, THANK YOU! God bless, gentle people.
Your kind words mean a lot to me, truly it does. Like you said we never stop learning and considering Craig has a wealth of knowledge under his belt, there's lots we can learn from him. Stay blessed my friend and thank you once again ~Peace~
Thank you. As a retired teacher I can say Craig is an excellent teacher. Clear, well prepared and inspiring. I have NEVER considered starting a fire with a bow drill. (I have to admit to being amazed at starting a fire with a fire steel) I am now considering that it just MIGHT be in within my capability!
Your kind words are sincerely appreciated Felicity and indeed Criag had been teaching for many years hence I knew he was the man to do this video with. Sincerely wishing you the best of luck in trying this out for yourself and do let me know how you get on ~Peace~
What can I say,I had a spare time to what he the video, and really enjoyed it buddy, some great tips and great tutorial on bow and drill, going to give it a go with the set you gave me,looks really rewarding, catch up soon.thanks zed for taking the time to share and thanks to Craig for his time and experience. Regards Davy
Looking forward to my weekend course with Craig at the end of July, I have been to his site before and it is a very professional set up and Craig is a proper bloke and it’s about time more people got to know about him and his set up,Zed I think you were there on the Saturday morning. And this is a excellent training video.
Thank you kindly Geoff, indeed Craig is an absolute pro at what he does so i couldn't think of a bettert person to colaborate with. Hoping your course with him goes well and that the weather gods shine down upon you! ~Peace~
Good job! One thing I do a little different is widen my hearth notch at the bottom. This allows all the powder to build in the notch and prevents powder from building around the spindle at the top of the hearth board. I always tell folks if they are getting powder built up around the top of the hearth, rather than in the notch, they need to stop and widen the notch a bit at the bottom. This allows, not only a larger dust pile but is easier to dislodge the coal from the hearth. But as they say, 100 people will do something 100 different ways. As long as the result is fire! Thanks for the video!
A warm welcome to the channel and to the world of Bushcraft, hoping these videos help you on your journey moving forward and a sincere thank you for your kind words ~Peace~
1:31:00 "you can test the quality of your base board by taking your lighter and burning the dust" I know this is out of context, but the irony is funny🤣🤣🤣
:-) Know what you mean mate, but it is a handy test if you're learning, and remember what the late, great Mors Kochanski said about bow drill... Those who are proficient at Bow Drill wouldn't go into the wilderness without matches and those who don't carry matches are probably too stupid to learn Bow Drill anyway ;-)
