Thank you for this review of the Dartmouth comments. I find it enlightening that even in changing times, Dartmouth is selecting 46% of students out of private schools and 44% students from New England Atlantic regions.I bet there is significant overlap between those LOL . This at a time when vast majority of students in USA come from the public. school background. A question - do all Ivy League schools show similar percentage ?
I've beaten you up on your takes from other videos, but this was well done. Dug into some obscure stats and presented some insightful commentary devoid of personal bias for the most part.
I believe many of the elite colleges are reading the SATs subjectively. My son goes to a high achieving CA school, mostly Asians/whites. His Asian friend got deferred at Cornell with 1600, perfect grades, student government, etc. My son is white, got 1560, which we originally thought was pretty good. He only took it once. Now we realize the colleges will just compare him to his own school, not the general applicant pool, so his great score is practically average, or just a bit above average. Kind of sad for the really high achieving kids who are not part of the certain demographics that elite colleges are desperate to promote.
I mean a 1560 is literally a good score lol. It shows he can keep up with the competitiveness of his school. Really high achieving kids need something more, not just good grades and test scores.
That’s not news I don’t think. Most colleges are very up front about that, that they don’t compare applicants directly against each other unless they are from the same hs. Also, your son will do just fine in life. It’s the long game that matters
The good news is that colleges are not that dumb. If they see a kid with a 1560 and another with a 1570 from the same high school, they're not going to just completely ignore the 1560 kid because he's 10 points behind. Yes, it is true that they compare to students from the same high school, but that mainly means that a kid with a 1400 isn't going to be as highly regarded if his fellow students tend to get 1550s or above. And anything above a 1530 will probably be good enough for them to consider the student no matter what the people around him get--1530 is still really, really high compared to the average in the country.
I don't think it really comes down to the SAT like that. I went to a competitive high school and got into half the ivy league last year with a 1510 SAT and 3.9 GPA. Very good, but looking at my high school, could argue it's nothing remarkable. It must have come down to a bunch of other factors, not sure what, some of it's luck. I got my harvard admissions file back, and very very few of the comments they made on my profile correlated to my academics. They really like those essays, extracurriculars, and the interview.
I don’t think it’s impressive many schools are seeing record early admissions applications number because 2007 was a record year for births in the united states and now those kids are applying to college.
Well said, Craig. 17:3317:3317:33 Their PR sounds seems to have less useful info. and more propaganda, but it’s their PR and their choice. On a personal note - Luckily , either of my twins (seniors) applied to Dartmouth. Did REA & Ed and got deferred from Stanford and Vanderbilt. Seems like a blessing in disguise - each applied to 20 schools - and are excited about the freedom of multiple choices. I always find your videos Your videos: Entertaining or insightful or inspiring (sometimes all three). Thank you and HNY! Keep up the good work. 😊
I don't really see the problem with making attendance at brown less subject to ability to pay. Do we really want to preserve economic barriers to these sort of schools?

Choosing the right pond will be important if more schools follow this trend.

In other words they are bypassing the students for fair admissions decision.
Hi love your vids great info but perhaps try speaking a bit faster or release the vids at 1.25 or 1.3x since it's just a bit slow for a youtube video
You can put it at diff speeds on youtube

I’m glad you put out a video. I know you took time off for holidays with family but it was stressing me out! 😊
