honestly it started really good, then u said it was a paid app. 9$ montly or 90 yearly its not a bad plan..if u are someone that have a consistent playing group/that plays regularly. for someone that play a bit occasionally its really too much. also i think that its really not good to not have a free version of the product (with limited features obviously) or a lifetime plan. i hate subscriptions, im more then ok to paid once for a lifetime service but subs are jsut a way to scam people. WA is great if you want prompts for every element, and LK is great if you just want a platform that gets out of the way for you to do your own thing.
World Anvil is great if you want to be prompted about every aspect of your world, but I prefer my campaign manager to just get out of my way and let me create, you know?

Glad you found the video helpful. I made all my templates myself based on experience knowing the kinds of information I personally found useful for different elements.
I'm really liking the new update, after a bit of fixing that they did really quickly, legend keeper is so useful, I use it as my sole tool for my campaign that I'm homebrewing. The tab feature really useful, for example, I have a town called Qaryat Alhamla, this town has a specific part in the story so I have a tab for my quest for the story, a map tab, and a general info tab, been so so useful for my campaign

I also use mods to help with the journal part as well as other QOL mods in general. Really liking the look of this app Anto but I'm not so keen on the idea of it being browser based. How resource-heavy is it? Do you know how well it would run on a MacBook Pro at 36 Mb/s? Any freezing or lags?
I don't know about how well it would work on mac, but unless your world is massive it should run pretty well. I have 500+ pins on my current map and I get some stuttering but only when I'm also livestreaming, otherwise its fine.
Hello! I can't draw or paint, how can I make a map with such detail as the one you use for this review? Did someone created it from scratch or is there like a map tool for it? Thanks :)
Does LK support different group permissions within the same project? When you have two groups playing in the same world but not want them to see each other's notes?
It does't have permission groups, but you can adjust the permission for individual members, so that will work, it's just a little more work than doing it in groups.
@@IcarusGames So if a player join late (like 40+ sessions in) and also joins the world in LK, do you have to adjust all preivous relevant articles' permissions to include the new player too?
@@fantasy-lair I think the way around that would be to set the default permissions for articles to be private from members' view, then manually change the permission for each player. Then if a new player joined they would inherit the members' permission, and the articles would be hidden, allowing you to adjust the relevant ones they need to see.
@@IcarusGames I see. Even though LK sounds awesome, the amount of work needed by the lack of this feature, prevents me from using it. I have 5-8 groups that play in the same world, with members sometimes swapping between groups. An extensive world with numbers of articles in 3 digits...having to go back and re-adjust one by one for a new/changing player is just not worth.
@@IcarusGames I saw it in another comment yeah. My issue is that I want to make a full map of a world with 2 fairly big continental masses and Inkarnate is just not big enough to put such a big world in one panel. I had to break it into 16 separates map that I then put back together with another image editor ... but sometimes I was off so the coastlines doesn't align properly or stuff like that which is annoying.
Question 1st: What program did you use to make that Map ( Have a video for that ? ) and 2nd I saw your One Note world-building video, which do you like best Now, One Note or Legend Keeper?
Map is made with Inkarnate, which I've not gotten around to making a video on yet! As for the LK vs Onenote. I don't typically recommend onenote anymore just because it's really not well supported by Microsoft anymore and seems to be suffering more and more problems as time goes on. I've been using LK exclusively for all my worldbuilding for the last 2 years now.
These look like a powerful set of tools, but the subscription monetization model makes me leery. Is there another tool that does something similar but is available for single payment?
Notion has a similar set of note taking and cross-linking abilities, and is free, but it doesn't have the maps/pin functionality. If you don't care about maps and pins, Notion is probably what I would recommend. World anvil has similar features to LK and a free version, but once you grow beyond that, it's also subscription. I know a lot of folks are hesitant over subscription services, but in the small scale RPG scene, I've grown to almost prefer them because such tools have to continually improve to earn your subscription. I've seen a number of single-payment tools that start off great, but the updates slowly wind down and eventually the subscription models overtake them, such as with wonderdraft and inkarnate map makers.
I decided to start using LK after this video! I'm currently in the process of transferring my notes from OneNote into LK, which is a chore. Any way you could share your templates for pages like factions, NPCs, etc.?
@@IcarusGames Seems I pciked just the right time to get started then! Loving the channel btw, first got into the mapmaking vids but am hooked by the detail dives into DMing systems and PF2e content.
It looks nice, but I dont want another monthly. I'm doling out money right now for Forge, two patreons, and D&D Beyond. it starts to add up. Thank goodness Dungeondraft and Wonderdraft were a one time price! Back to One Note I guess.
Gave this a try and it takes aaaaaaaaaaaaages to upload maps ... not huge ... after 10mins a 164kb map was still processing never found out how long it took as I cancelled my trial before the image processing took place. World building is time consuming enough but sitting waiting for a tiny file to process for 10+ minutes makes it useless. I also tried with a 16kb image and that stuck too (and before you ask I'm on a 500mbs fibre optic line).
No idea what the cause would be but definitely sounds like an anomaly. I sometimes have to wait maybe 30-45 seconds for my larger 8k world maps to upload, but all the other images I upload process in no time.
@@IcarusGames thanks for the response, it’s a shame because I was very much sold on Legend Keeper and was ready to migrate my world from World Anvil to LK, but don’t want to risk this kind of thing happening when I have committed my content to the platform and then have no choice but to sit and wait for things to ‘process’. World creation is time consuming enough without that time being sucked up by processing times. Maybe I’ll revisit LK again in a year or so and see a)if it’s improved and b) how much progress they have made on the development map. FYI this is no reflection on your content I love your guides and the way they are put together is really professional and comprehensive, huge thanks and props for all your videos.

Tried this and found it to be terrible. Having to design the layouts and everything just gets in the way of the worldbuilding. I don't want to design a website I want to design a world.
@@IcarusGames Honestly, they both seem bad. Legendkeeper is just blank and you have to make it all yourself while World Anvil is ad banners and boxes cluttering the entire screen.
@@LutieIV It did show how to do a bunch of the core basic functions. Sorry the 20 minute video didn't show you how to do absolutely everything the app has to offer 🙃 I do have a bunch of other videos that go into much more detail than this overview, though.
If Legendkeeeper was a one time purchase I would buy it. But not going to pay a subscription and then lose access to my own creations once I stop paying. Same issue with World anvil and Realmworks. Devs are TOO FRIKKIN GREEDY!!!
If you cancel your subscription you can still log in and view your projects I believe, just not edit them, and the export as HTML and JSON options are not gated behind the paywall, you've always got the export options (as per LK's FAQ pages). I used to be against SaaS for this kind of thing too, but I've seen too many 1-time purchase tools in this space stagnate and get left behind, while the SaaS continue to grow and evolve thanks to the recurring revenue. A good free alternative is Notion, it uses a lot of the same core commands and functions, but isn't as specific for worldbuilding so doesn't have maps, pins, boards, or those kinds of features.
@@IcarusGames Im considering moving from Notion to LK. They sure do share similarities on the note-side, but it truly lacks the map-related features. SaaS is pricey, but active support requires an active revenue stream. LK is on the pricey side for what it offers, which is the main reason I won't be moving to it. It's more expensive than Spotify, Netflix or D&D Beyond.
@@Putper Each individual person has their own views on SaaS tools and what they think is worth it. One thing I do think it's important to keep in mind with LK, and many other services like it in our hobby, it's being run by a handful of people. The likes of spotify and netflix have venture capital behind them, thousands of employees etc. When you support any small creator project like this, your money goes to making the product better, but it's also putting food on the table and supporting families directly, rather than going into investment portfolios or executive bonuses.
@@IcarusGames 100%. Big companies only care about pleasing investors. LK has only a few employees actively working together with the community to improve their product. Keeping a business-to-consumer company afloat is incredibly hard and I'm sure they need every buck, especially in these still early stages. But providing multiple tiers for different people's needs is a common standard. I'm a DM running a single campaign and a poor student, it'd be nice if there was a lower tier that fits my needs: 1 project, no guests, limited storage. I hope they consider such options as the project grows

Not yet, but when public sharing becomes a thing in LK I will share it.
Hello! I can't draw or paint, how can I make a map with such detail as the one you use for this review? Did someone created it from scratch or is there like a map tool for it? Thanks :)
Hey there! I used Inkarnate, which I have a video on here: ruclips.net/video/B53_8G_BkLE/видео.html
What did you use to make the map itself though ? I use inkarnate but I feel like it is way too small for a big continent wide map.
I use Inkarnate, exported out at 8k resolution. I prefer it to Wonderdraft because the stamps are higher resolution.
What program did you make the map in?
It was map with Inkarnate :D
Question 1st: What program did you use to make that Map ( Have a video for that ? ) and 2nd I saw your One Note world-building video, which do you like best Now, One Note or Legend Keeper?
Map is made with Inkarnate, which I've not gotten around to making a video on yet! As for the LK vs Onenote. I don't typically recommend onenote anymore just because it's really not well supported by Microsoft anymore and seems to be suffering more and more problems as time goes on. I've been using LK exclusively for all my worldbuilding for the last 2 years now.
@@IcarusGames really like to see the Video. working on a World for my Campaign and that would help a lot
Was that map made by Inkarnate?
It was indeed! :)
I decided to start using LK after this video! I'm currently in the process of transferring my notes from OneNote into LK, which is a chore. Any way you could share your templates for pages like factions, NPCs, etc.?
I'm aiming to share my world and templates by this coming Monday!
@@IcarusGames Seems I pciked just the right time to get started then! Loving the channel btw, first got into the mapmaking vids but am hooked by the detail dives into DMing systems and PF2e content.
@@IcarusGames Looking forward to you template. Are you still on track for sharing it today?
@@vaultwulf1927 Link will be up in a community post in a couple hours :D
@@IcarusGames Thank you for the super fast response!
Anyway I can get that location template ? Lol
Sooooo... based on your enthusiasm and support for Legend Keeper (and also that you kindly responded to my slightly frustrated/ranty post) I gave LK another go... [splogging cream on my humble pie 🥧)... it worked a treat. So based purely on your recommendations (Legend Keeper founders I hope you're watching) I am convinced to give it another go. Thanks again for being an awesome source of knowledge and info (not to mention great content).
@@simonculley I'm glad you got it working!! Here's a link to the public version of my world which might be helpful for getting some inspiration for organizing things and getting up and running: www.legendkeeper.com/app/cldbsdaxzbci70891hblm05ht
@@IcarusGames Awesome thank you. I’m now wrestling with templates but that is more my process of deciding what it needs ie my addled brain, rather than any short comings of LK 😂. So I’m sure this link will be invaluable so it’s very much appreciated 🙏🏻
NGL, I like LegendKeeper and it looks like the closest to what I want in a campaign world manager, but the "It doesn't work in Firefox, sorry" problem is a deal-breaker for me. :(
I just fired it up on firefox and it worked fine for me!
@@IcarusGames I can log in just fine, but launching a world just goes to an infinite spin cycle.
@@thegneech probably worth bringing that up in the discord support channel, as that's not something I've ever encountered!
@@IcarusGames Digging deeper, it seems to be the Ghostery plugin, but only in Firefox. Ugh!
What do you think of Legendkeeper? Is it a tool you would consider using to manage your RPG campaigns?
If you want to see me use LK to build my own world, check out my Twitch channel at www.twitch.tv/icarusgamesuk. Every Sunday evening I get together with the twitch chat for some collaborative worldbuilding.
It's really perfect, but DAMN, so expensive... not possible for me... So sad there is no free tool like this...
Hello. My name is Vitalii. I'm from Ukraine. I really like Legend Keeper. I want more people to know about him. That's why the question. Do you allow translation and dubbing of your video into Ukrainian? So that I can post it on my gaming channel? Or would give it to you to post on your channel.
Looks like Microsoft Onenote
LK is a lot better than World Anvil, but it still isn't great. Of course compared to World Anvil, a root canal sounds pretty good.
They take a different path to get to the same result, same as most dedicated worldbuilding tools.
Tried this and found it to be terrible. Having to design the layouts and everything just gets in the way of the worldbuilding. I don't want to design a website I want to design a world.
If you want an option with all the templates premade, check out World Anvil, they have templates and form fields for all the smallest details.
@@IcarusGames
Honestly, they both seem bad. Legendkeeper is just blank and you have to make it all yourself while World Anvil is ad banners and boxes cluttering the entire screen.
you showed a bunch of stuff but did not show how to do any of it this is a dumb turorial
@@LutieIV It did show how to do a bunch of the core basic functions. Sorry the 20 minute video didn't show you how to do absolutely everything the app has to offer 🙃
I do have a bunch of other videos that go into much more detail than this overview, though.
It look amazing but if only it a subscrion base model product. i just wish there is some add-on on Obsidian that allow me to do this to.
Well there is the obsidian leaflet plugin which you can use to add pins to maps so you could also make the nested maps. I'm currently using it for my campaign but considering to switch to LegendKeeper because it seems a little easier to use ...
