  • Today I learned:
Lichen can be black light (UV light) reactive!
These lichens are not bioluminescence (they do not glow in the dark). Scientists are still discovering which species of lichen contain florescent chemicals!
Did you know about this?! I ordered some super-inexpensive, keychain black lights from Amazon to look for Yooperlights in our existing rock collection. I recently learned that there are mushrooms that phosphoresce - so we’ve been shining our little lights on anything that might possibly have mushroom mycelium on it. John found this moss and #lichen covered bark because there were reactive fibers on it. They may have been spider webs or stray cloth fibers on the of bark. I list them when I was trying to focus my macro lens, but found these bright bits of lichen instead!! IRL, they shine dayglo pink. I don’t know why my camera doesn’t pick up that color 🤷🏻‍♀️. Either way, it’s fun and exciting to look at the world under a new light!!
