- We remove the steering column from our F100
Episode 558
The steering column in our F100 is broken! That requires us to do a restoration project on the collar. This week we explore what we'll need to get the column installed on the 1972 F100.

Good chrome on that front bumper; nice mirror image of the cameraman's sandals. LOL.
Yeah, it's days like these that make me want to learn After Effects.
Excellent! This is an area I haven't been into yet.
Glad to hear!
Jeff, you and Cam should do a tutorial on installing a Holley Sniper efi on the F100. It would tie in together nicely with some of the things you have done already to the truck (having it change the idle settings with the a/c) and have to do (the exhaust with the manifold leak and installing the o2 to work with the efi. It would be great for those who would like to go efi on a budget, get the best mpg out of their truck, and enjoy driving their truck without having to adjust their carb for altitude, seasons, etc.
We are hoping to do a Sniper install on the 347 going in the 64 Falcon hard top.
Hi fellas. I am a regular watcher and subscriber. I would love to see either a tutorial on running all new fuel lines to the behind the seat tank, or installing a new rear tank in the spare tire area. I really appreciated this episode. My column is kaput. I have been fixing my truck slowly, along side you guys. Your show is saving me so much grief. I am actually enjoying working on my truck now that I know what I'm doing. 👍
The 2nd part will be posted tomorrow. A kind of like the idea of doing new fuel lines in the truck too. Look for that one to be coming down the road.
Just found the video.! Was a huge help. My 72 did the same thing. Hard to sell a truck that u can’t get in gear. Lol
Aint it though?
I live in Mexico too!
Mucho Si!!!
Great video, I hate working on steering columns.....
Me Too!!
Good timing. I just asked about disassembly and reassembly of the column on my 63 fairlane
If it is a column shift this should be pretty close, that column is actually a 65 and 64 Falcon column and Ford probably used it in several different places.
My bench....what have you done to my BEAUTIFUL bench!! 🤥
Hahahahaha it's gonna get worse.
@@AutoRestoMod Yep...what it is for
There is a length difference between power and manual steering columns.
Yes
@@AutoRestoMod I ran into it on my dads 72 f100
Had have the keyway welded back on the tube at the top twice on my 3 speed, what a nightmare that metal tube is thin. I would of perferd replacing the tube but they are no longer available anywhere. Thanks for the video.
Yes sad that that part is not available. But I have to wonder How many different iterations of that tube there are. I know that Ford did something different with the power steering trucks on the column, but I'm not sure if that would have affected that tube.
Thank you for explaining and actually visually showing someone how to jump the neutral safety switch, I know that mine is fried the lever that goes to it from the shifter I think is completely gone in my truck and it will have to be bypassed when I get it running so that I can drive it till I can afford a new neutral safety switch (why are they so extremely expensive?)
We really try to show everything on camera, sometimes even if it's just a photo because it helps a lot.
I replaced that neutral safety switch and could not believe the obscene money they wanted for it.
It aint cheap sometimes for sure.
I've watched so many of your videos, I'm starting to feel like I'm there with you when your filming. Lol. Is that a good or bad thing? Lol
Is the lower bushing on the shaft plastic or metal ?
Just think on the left side of the coast in Seattle we've seen 70 only twice this summer and the rain is cold.
It was 101 here in Minnesota on Monday
We've had a brutal spring so far; summer doesn't look to be much better lol. Next week it's supposed to be close to a 100 all week.
I think the broken automatic shift collar is somewhat common on early Bronco, I'm assuming F100 column mechanism is similar. When I had to fix this on my Bronco ~8 years ago I found tutorial from Jim Creel @ Wild Horses useful. In case anyone is interested, link to first video [ruclips.net/video/_HcqxJ9yCv0/видео.html], I believe there's three videos in the series.
Yes the Bronco uses the same 64-65 Falcon column. I haven't checked out Wild Horses yet, thanks for the heads up.
Did it just fail with out any warning? My F100 will jump out of gear (park to reverse), so this project is probably in my future.
I had a Ford truck that would fall into reverse then I would
back up about 10 feet then fall into drive and I would pull out of me parking place and drive to work. It was a 1966 f series. Convenient but dangerous. It was in transmission. A spring loaded piece of metal that looked like a silver bullet. The selector detent wore a groove into it. Made the tension weak. Yours may be different.
Proper column to transmission linkage adj should be first step.
I had a slight warning when it wouldn't stay in park a couple of days before that and then it just abruptly stopped working.
Rip out the bench seats, put in some Mustang buckets and convert it from an auto to a 5 speed on the floor.
Sounds like a great plan if we had any money lol
Hmm. At 5:36 you get to "jion" your patreon account. Might have been the guy that had a "little problem " getting it into park.........
Yeah I'm a dyslexic
What is that cluster/dash with the vents built in it? I can't seem to find any info about that. I want that for my 69 F100 project.
I really need to get another instrument cluster from NPD to do a video on how to make that work. No one makes that cluster I just made it up out of my own brain lol.
@@AutoRestoMod Wow that's amazing! They seem stock! My 69 F100 project is missing a lot of things, including the clusters, so maybe I buy a set and ship them to you for that video. Just let me know 👍
Hey guys, been watching your videos for a while and they have helped me with some of the things I have been doing with my 67' F100. I have been searching through all your interior/dash videos and haven't found a link to the part so I have to ask, where did you guys get the instrument cluster bezel with the air vents in it because I'd like to put one in my truck but I can't find it anywhere. I'd appreciate the help, thanks.
You can't find it because no one makes it. It's a stock reproduction reproduction - panel piece Using vents from the guy's at Vintage Air. We used a wholesale to cut the holes for the 2 vents.
Does that thing have a welded diff? Look weird going around that bend at 4:17 mark.
People do not weld Ford differentials.
Honestly it was just cold as a stone lol it was hard to keep it running.
