  • I’ve been away for a while so here’s a little July tour of the allotment.
I’m sharing my successes and epic failures as the slug plague continues.
Stick around to the end for a before and after of my allotment transformation and some unexpected news.
Thank you to lovely Ali ‪@myrustygarden‬ for your kind words in the week. Well timed kindness that inspired me to get on and share an update. We have a lovely little community on You Tube 💕

So many dragonflies where I live. Pest pressure is minimal though I didn't sow plants, some volunteered. I sowed in late spring one melon and a few beans. 🙏♥

I think it’s the newly sowed plants that have struggled most. They can’t get big enough before the slugs get to them. The mature plants are doing better.
I hope your plants are doing well 😊

I know exactly what it's like, im working more now and my plot is 20mins away, im more knackered than I was and don't have much energy left to do much. Flower bed does look good, love the dahlias.👍😁👌

Thanks for sharing this video with us. Congratulations on your new plot. Your garden is coming along nicely. Yes my garden is struggling a little too. Its because of the heat. But keep on pushing through the heat. 😊

      @Littlesheddiaries  Месяц назад

Seems we have problems at the opposite end of the spectrum. I think you have it harder with lots of heat. Do you put shade up for your plants? How about watering, is that a challenge?
I guess we have to adapt what we grow as the weather is changing.
Good luck, I hope it cools off for you ☀️

Glad your back and if times an issue I’d just give a wee update at the end of the month. Tomatoes should be fine once sun comes out a bit more. Flowers are stunning Clare slugs seem to love them too, must be the nice thick tender stems. 7:53 but your sunflowers 🌻 are looking amazing. Brutal slug damage this year 😢😢 for the UK. Even here Les bees and butterflies ours is the opposite it’s way too hot. Hey your peppers are doing better than mine. Good news about the new allotment and someone will be very grateful for all your work. Have a simply awesome week Clare see you in end of August, Ali ☔️🌤️🇨🇦

Worrying about the insects isn’t it.
I really hope someone steps in to take it over, would be a shame for all the work to go to waste.
I hope to try and do a video every two weeks perhaps. See how it goes.
Have a great week and thanks for your lovely kind heart 💕

It has been an awful year weather wise and so much more of a challenge to control slugs and snails than I ever remember. I’m down on the SE Coast and also being battered by wind and rain. I agree the lack of pollinators is alarming.
I am also growing Zinnia (Queen Lime series 😍) for the 1st time and my 1st sowing has only just started to flower. Like you, I’ve also sown some more (Zinderella) a couple of week ago.🤞🏻 If it’s any consolation, my straw flowers are nowhere near as large as yours, as I sowed them late🫣. Us gardeners are optimists aren’t we!
Wishing you luck with the new allotment.

We are certainly getting a battering aren’t we!
I spotted a red admiral butterfly and a painted lady or peacock butterfly the other day when it was finally sunny 😊
I’m desperately hoping my little baby zinnias can grow up and away because 6 of them have been munched.
Good luck with your little straw flowers, are you going to dry them? They’re amazing at keeping their colour aren’t they 💕

@@Littlesheddiaries it feels more autumnal than summer. I’ve only just seen the odd butterfly when the sun cares to join us🤪
My strawflowers are just the copper red and purple ones and I’ve planted half of both them and Zinnia and used copper rings and copper tape to protect from snails. I held the others back, just in case, but they are plenty big enough now to take an attack and survive. I’m hoping a few days of sun and both Zinnia and strawflower will blossom.
Like you, I love my flowers most and not tried these annuals before. Having said that, growing melon and black Toms in the greenhouse is also very exciting this year.
Wishing you a good harvest and good luck on the new plot. Look forward to your next vlog 👏🏼

Lovely to hear from you again and wonderful news that you have got an allotment in your village. It will make all the difference. I was lucky enough to get mine just down the hill from my little bungalow ( no garden to speak of just cement terraces up the side of a Welsh valley) and it is great to just pop out down the hill to pick a few beetroot for lunch and fit in the odd half hour of weeding without it being an expedition. You have made such a difference in one year and hopefully someone else will benefit from your efforts and be able to start off in an up and running plot (space for a few curses here) Slugs have been the bane of everyone's growing year so far but for me it has been the weather; I'm on my 4th sowing of beetroot and it still doesn't want to grow. Everything germinates and then just looks at me accusingly as if to say" well what do you expect me to do now!!!" For a first allotment year I think you have done amazingly. Excited to see your new adventure.

Ahh thank you for the kind words, I’ll be quite sad to leave it but excited about the prospect of having one so close to home. Mine is up a hill so I’m thinking of getting a bike so I can whizz home fast and get fit cycling up there.
I was amazed to find those beetroot I harvested in the video, all the others got eaten.
I really hope someone takes it over because it’s pretty weed free and I’ve put so much compost and horse poop up there.
I’ll be digging up my dahlias and perennials to take with me to the next one when I go, so they can’t have it all 😆
I hope your beetroot catches up. We are due a few sunny days soon, allegedly. Good luck!

There’s been so many changes at the plot. The flower bed is especially striking! That bouquet you picked is stunning.
Slugs are being a real menace for us all.. hateful creatures.
I think the new plot sounds perfect. Yes, a lot of work too, but the location will seal the deal. Hopefully it’ll be more sheltered for you too.

@TheFarmyardGarden this is so true, although the cost of veg has gone up, the price of flowers is extortionate now.
