As an African, I realised something - what happened to Native Americans is what the European colonialists tried to emulate in Africa. I am so ashamed that as a global citizen, I did not know about what happened to Native Americans. I am ashamed - but I will make sure my children know.

The superior and the inferior. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. If you weren’t biased you’d study the history of the planet not the west and point fingers. The thing is, what “happened” to the native Americans was inevitable. They perished due to disease not subjugation. And that death was due to foreign contact with disease and animals that had not been found in the Americas. This was no different than the Black Plague from China that killed over 220 million. This was entirely natural what happened in the Americas.

Just finished watching episode four. This was unlike any doc I’ve ever seen. One has to be in the right mindset to watch this because it is brutal. Raoul Peck outdid himself here.

Thank you for this inconvenient truth that highlights the complexities of racism and genocide of indigenous peoples across the many eras of human civilization. You have my respect as a filmmaker and a truth-sayer.
Misses the bit about whites being skaves though doesn't it conveniently. We've never been abused in shape or form ever. That's an inconvenient truth.

No. This IS racist and it is hateful propaganda that condemns people because of the color of their skin, thats racist, people should not be blamed for the crimes of others just because oftheir skin tone
White Fragility is a good book too. That and this hit the funny feeling we all can't describe. Our abrasive, strong revulsion at the faintest hint of being labeled racist or discussing it at all.
Raoul Peck is masterful at storytelling in this documentary and the cinematography is stunning! Just excellent👌🏾
raoul peck's equivalence of archival, documentary, animated and fictional footage is as groundbreaking as the fact that HBO took on such a politically important project. the entire world should watch this!
This is one of the best documentary HBO has done in many years. Bravo. I was going to get rid of my HBO prescription to save money. But I’m going to keep it because the two documentaries I’ve watched with HBO has been excellent. Please keep them coming
Breathtaking imagery, piercing, and agonizing truth framed by an artistic titan. What he has done for the victims of colonialism is simple -- historical retribution. Finally, a megaphone to deracinate the deeply rooted facade of colonialism in all its forms and American exceptionalism. Halleluja amen.
Where is that facade exactly? In some 1950's text book? Or some old Hollywood movie that he confuses for "the official record" instead of what they actually were, mythology, an idealized version . But never actually history. This doc would have made more sense 50 years ago. The ideas are pretty much as antiquated as Morton's phrenology. They didn't need historical retribution, because the history was ALWAYS there. Just because some buffoons confuse history and mythology, doesn't mean their story wasn't told. It all depends on who you are paying attention to and why. And the "victims" of colonialism, some have done quite well for themselves, others not so much. And those that have not, don't need "historical retribution", they need a bank loan.
Thank you for this great film!! The extermination ideology still resonates today just covered up and re-worded in so many ways.

This is one of the few texts I kept after college. One of my very first freshman year assignments was to read this. 20 years later i still read it every other year or so. Had such a profound impact on my way of thinking about history, civilizations, and the horrors others had to endure so that we can be here.
Crazy how we can see this today with replacement theory, eugenics and more through-lines to today.

There's still a story that's not being told. They did not hate black people because we were supposedly inferior. You don't take inferior people's artifacts and display them all throughout your museums and private collections.

🎀I hated how it went all over the place it felt like a bullet point documentary. Going all over the place. The Crusades is mentioned but what isn’t, is how it was a response to, Islamic invasion including Christian lands. How they were ottomans who were explaining their empire, enslaving non-Christians and trying to invade Jerusalem.🎀
🎀Hiroshima is mentioned but nothing if the fact that THAT was in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbour, or that they were enemies fighting in World War II.🎀

Not all .. my cats don’t run when I chuckle at something one of them has just done. But that’s because I don’t ever believe at laughing AT anyone - be that human or feline. Laughing at someone is an act of malice. Laughing with someone over a shared moment of amusement about “Lord what fools these mortals me” .. is an act of connection and affirmation. The one is disparagement and the other an affirmation.

Don't take this as me knocking you for owning cats. I've had my own just until recently. I'm just saying that living indoors with us is not a natural state of being for them. I would never do that to a kitten.

That cat knows as much as a human about being a wild cat. The animal probably complies out of simple self-preservation.

only watched episode one and really hated the voice. I wanted to give the narrator water cause felt like his throat was dry :( the voice on this video sounds better to me.
He should've left the narration to a professional - it was far too distracting & a little bit creepy.
A brilliant doco on the mass genocides and ongoing effects of colonialism, glad to see Raoul is continuing to uncover necessary truths in his productions. America and all colonies are crime scenes needing devolution, redress and healing for native peoples.

Just finished watching the series and while I already knew much of what was said, how it was said and what it illuminated is truly earth shattering, eye opening stuff. But for all its poetry and facts, there will be some who will refuse to see it. They prefer their illusions, prefer to walk through life inflicting pain due to their ignorance. A mediocre and pitiable people indeed.

If you didn't know this history by now, or at least some of it, then you haven't been paying attention. In the scope of world history we aren't unique as how a country is even formed or built: conquest. Minstrelsy, lynchings, and eventual struggle for civil rights were the norm. How oppressed is anyone today really when compared to that?
That's the price haiti's been paid the inpendence is a price the haitians will never finish to paid until they see the end of this nation.

The voiceover here is harsh and somewhat distracting. The material is harsh enough. Sounds like the voice of someone who has smoked for 30+ years. Difficult to listen to. The information is exceptional. Hoping to adjust the sound or turn on closed captioning.
