    I would like to echo what you said at 4:30. You can bring spatial awareness to many different skillsets. I really had no previous 3D modeling and texturing experience before my current job as a multimedia designer, but my understanding of photogrammetry, digitizing, vertices and using elevation data really helped me pick up the skill set quickly.

      Katie Scheurer it will be a good while until I do, however I want to plan my education. Concerning programming, such as Python, how important do you think it is? Or rather, is there a limit in this field without it?

    • @KatieScheurer
      @KatieScheurer  4 года назад +3

      Cdub if your main focus is GIS development and infrastructure then I would say it is very important to understand python. If you're focus is on analysis I would look at R with Python. If you don't like programming then focus on domain knowledged and utilizing GIS in your field.

    • @KatieScheurer
      @KatieScheurer  4 года назад

      Marlon Bell that is a hard one. I would say go with what you are interested in because ultimately that will serve you the most. With that said I think spatial analysis is big for getting value out of loads of data which will be important as we are increasing data output exponentially as a society right now. So people that can make sense of that and add value are going to be in demand.

    Thank you for your information and experience about gis. I’m gonna start my gis study very soon in Canada. All the research I did wasn’t very positive. A lot of people talked about GIS it’s not a real career or G.I. S environment is not good. That makes me very confused and worried. What can I do now to prepare my future study and how should I do my research to get more valuable results? Thank you.

    • @KatieScheurer
      @KatieScheurer  4 года назад +6

      Jingkai Luan it is frustrating with the mixed messages. From what I have seen many of the negative comments come from those that are not being valued in their career. If you are getting into the developer and programming side it can be more profitable to not have GIS in your title. But if you are more on the science side and application of the tools it can be different. I would start looking at job descriptions in you area for a better idea of salary ranges and responsibilities/skills needed. That really is the only way to know.

    • @gisjot2960

      Jingkai Luan stated: "A lot of people talked about GIS it’s not a real career or G.I. S environment is not good. That makes me very confused and worried."
      I know I am a little late but I have to chime into the conversation. From my experience, GIS is a great career. People who say GIS is not a good career does not understand GIS. Do not listen to those people. It is like saying a Computer Science, Data Analyst or Database Administrator career is not good but we all know Computer Science, Database Administrator and Data Analyst professions are good careers.
      I work for a City in the USA and as a GIS Analyst I label my self as a Computer Scientist, Data Analyst, Database Administrator, Server Administrator, Network Administrator and because I have to work with sewer, water, Storm Water, Electric, Roads, Parcels, land and the list goes on, an engineer.
      GIS is a challenging and great career, which as a GIS Technician or Analyst, you wear many different hats.

    How can I get easier job and which college or university is good for Gis degree

    • @KatieScheurer
      @KatieScheurer  4 года назад

      I'm not sure what would be an easier job for you. There are many places you can get a GIS degree. It really depends on what you preference is and how much are you willing to spend. I would recommend finding job postings in your area that you would want and work backward to figure out what qualifications you need to qualify for that position. Then when you have a few universities visit them and meet the instructors or watch a lecture online. If you think you can learn from them it's a right fit.
