The thing to know about Pretenders is that only the first two albums had the original lineup of Hynde, Honeyman-Scott, Farndon, and Chambers. After the second album Farndon was fired and then Honeyman-Scott died two days later (Farndon died the next year). Since then the only constant has been Chrissie Hynde, although Martin Chambers has been with them most of the time. In my opinion no one has truly replaced Honeyman-Scott's guitar so I will always be partial to the first two albums.

There's a lot of great music from the late '70s that might be hard to dig if you're looking for "the sauce" because, in large part, it was often made, in part, in reaction to that kind of music. Punk's the obvious, but this strain of punk-pop New Wave - Pretenders, early Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, the Cars, later Clash, etc. - where the songwriters and musicians were sort of tired of . . . um . . . "saucy" music. So they often under-accentuated things like hooks (I think you guys might have had a similar reaction to The Cars a while back). If you're looking for long jams and killer hooks where the musicianship is flaunted, this stuff might let you down. But at the time it was so fresh, and I still find it so much fun to listen to.

Two different meanings of 'brass' in these comments. The song is about having brass as in coins/money. The phrases 'he/she having a lot of brass'', 'brassing it out' and 'bold as brass', are to do with confidence often with overtones of foolhardiness. eg 'He jumped off that bridge as bold as brass', 'She came in the pub as bold as brass - the trollop'. Having 'brass balls' is a different but related meaning. Then there's 'Brassed-Off', which is pissed-off, fed-up. And for god's sake NEVER call a woman a 'brass' in a pub, you'll probably get a glass in your face - it means loud mouthed/slut/prostitiute. In the military the 'brass' are the officers. It's a funny language English, that's from a pom, now living in Australia 🤣

@@DawnSuttonfabfour yes, the origin of the term is Northern slang for money. But in this context, there is more than one meaning.
      To quote Chrissie Hynde:
"And the other thing about 'Brass in Pocket', the tradition of it is you're supposed to be kind of cocky and sure of yourself. You're not supposed to go on stage and say ' I'm small and have no confidence and I think I am a shit'. Bevause you just can't do that on stage. You're not supposed to, and probably you don't have too much confidence, and you do think you are a little piece of shit or else you wouldnt have gotten a Rock Band together in the first place".
My take on it is that she was so confident she would get the guy, because she was going to use everything in her toolbox to succeed. He would be unable to resist her, and she knows this, giving her extreme confidence to express her affection without fear of rejection. She went in to the conversation fully confident...she had BRASS IN POCKET!

@@bodhisattva3774 I agree, but I once heard a musician from that era talk about how this explosion of technology was so new and overwhelming, they ended up being the guinea pigs for learning how to use all of these new sounds. Still lots of great songs from that era, and when you get a veteran band like the Cars in the studio, all those new sounds make for great headphone tunes. But yes, some of those synth/drum sounds have aged poorly.

@@burmajones803 most of the classic syth sounds from Cars came from a good old Moog and those were around thru the 70s. I was a gigging musician in the early 80s (still am) and there was all this talk of syths putting guitar players and drummers out of work, thank god they were so wrong. Lol

Seriously though...how these fine young men have managed to completely avoid the sweet sounds of Lou Reed is beyond me. If they wanted to do "Walk On The Wild Side" that would be fine at this point (though certainly not my choice).

actually boys, i'll have you know you can make rings from nickels OR quarters! My family has a tradition of doing that. You take a spoon and slowly tap the edges to smoothen them out, then push the center through when it's ready. it takes time but they look beautiful! :)
Also, yes: It's a brass ring. Rings are made from silver, Diamond and brass.
