- How much time and effort does it cost to complete the Pokédex COMPLETELY in Generation 3? This video reviews my 7-month and several thousand dollar adventure to catch ‘em all, traversing 8 different games and 5 different consoles.
Stuff I didn’t mention in the video:
-I didn’t give Alakazam enough credit. Pre-“incident”, I had a Level 100 Alakazam which was the main reason many Pokémon had levelled up to evolve. Alakazam was a good friend of mine and his loss hurt the most out of the file erasure ☹
-During the Mt. Battle run, in the 70’s, a neighbor set off fireworks for New Years Eve. One landed in my backyard and set my wife’s greenhouse on fire. Middle of Mt. Battle, I had to rush outside and call 911. The fire Department came and I burned my hand putting it out before they came. It was a small fire, but I was TERRIFIED.
-I had gone on vacation two separate times during this mission, once in September 2023 and another in April 2024. I even bought a home and moved in January 2024. I also work a full-time job. This made me anxious with completion when I couldn’t work towards it and added to the length of time.

This was such a great video to watch! I am so glad that i have most of these games from back when i was a kid, also glad that Pokémon Box here in Europe is way cheaper (only paid €60 for the disk only, I have a spare box i can put it in)
People give Bethesda credit for starting the bs trend of DLC and paywalling content but Pokemon had been doing it since day 1. "Oh hey you want to 100% your pokedex? That goal we've been shoving in your face since day 1 back in gen one? Well first you are going to have buy gamecube, buy multiple games, spend a couple hundreds of dollars to travel across the country to a very limited locations, and home are shoddy hardware doesn't give out in the meantime."

Seriously. I know how crazy prices can get, but that's the first time in years my jaw dropped. I have some barely working disc in my basement my mom paid $40 for back in the day and someone would pay 1000 bucks for that?

A group of friends and I completed ours in high school, this was when gen 5 was out and we all just happened to have every copy of all the games we needed them we pulled out money together to get the Japanese copies. I can’t imagine doing this alone, completing the gen 3 dex is still one of the biggest flexes I have 16 years later
That sounds like such a sweet memory and accomplishment you did with your friends, I wish I had a friend who'd do this with me lol. Those game cartridges contain memories you'll keep for life.
one thing i really appreciate is that gen 6 was designed to let you complete the national dex with just the 4 main gen 6 games, no side games or previous gens required, ignoring the mythical pokemon not counted in the national dex.

Deoxy's triangle mechanic is that you have to reach and interact with it in the least possible number of steps each time.

@@kylecochrane4450 They always tell you the "do X steps left/right/up/down" in guides so not even the ones usually explaining the solution even know *why* it works, they just regurgitate the one they found working.

I'd argue that injecting the wondercards for the Deoxys and Mew events is a more "legit" option. That way, you not only get to visit the game locations and have the item in your bag, but you get to experience the process of getting the wondercard that activates these events. Maybe even getting one of the physical distribution carts for the 100% "licensed" experience.
I agree with you, I have a legitimate MYSTRY mew cartridge and that one isn’t anything like the one used by the game store.
Reminds me that I need to buy an emerald cart but I think I will just inject the wonder card. Especially since I might end up fighting it multiple times for a shiny in each form.

Wow! What an amazing story! I'd recommend getting a Gb Operator to back up your cartridge save files just in case your save file gets corrupt again or in case your battery dies and needs replacement. GREAT JOB!!! A winner is YOU!!
The sad thing is with just the operator he could have saved at least 3000$ on that pokedex

I definitely would go as far as to use homebrew, flash carts, and softmods to make things cheep and easy, while keeping the Pokemon and events themselves legit. Everyone has their own line

I find it fascinating how every player has a different perception on what they consider cheating and legit in pokemon.
You went the ACE route because you felt recreating the physical events wasn't to your liking, I think the complete opposite, where I think ACE and genned pokemons are very close to each other. I also feel like savedumping to trade with someone across the globe is a legit way to obtain jirachi and celebi, but I'm glad you went the full physical route and documented it, not many people do! Anyways. gratz on your pokedex, it looks fantastic!
Edit: btw, the faraway island mew was never released outside japan, and was only distributed (afaik) to japanese cartridges. Due to this, I feel like a ticket distribution for faraway island on english cartridges would be far from authentic. These mews also get blocked on pokemon bank.
Neither Bank nor Home have any issue with English Faraway Island Mew.
Also, I think it's fun to get to experience the Faraway Island event, even if it was never officially released in America

I never realized the Deoxys event was so rare as to be in only 3 US cities one single time, and it's not even an obvious list like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Wow, I didn't realize just how lucky it was to live where I do

There was also a Deoxys event in Houston Texas in 2006 for the 10th anniversary of Pokemon
Never forget that mythical just means “more money” in Pokémon terms.
I do see them starting to creep mythical Pokémon into the games. I just hope we get the older games released on Switch 2 with mythical events unlocked.
i genuinely love the random inclusions in the dlcs, keldeo and meloetta both genuinely sounded like mew under the truck at first. it even took a little bit to figure them out. Plus pecharunt getting a whole story bit. I'd love more like them

Wait you're in orlando? Screw cybertron, they banned me for talking to a worker there about him personally buying a game from me. TALKING, he didn't buy it, I didn't sell it. I still have the game in my collection! And the worker got reprimanded. Plus they're so disgustingly overpriced, screw them. If you ever need a game I can guarantee you I'll sell it to you for less than their price, maybe even half.

The workers are just these super mega douchebags with this "I don't wanna help you" attitude whenever I would go in, it could be the way I look, I've always gotten treated like shit among "nerds", which like, clearly I am one with deep knowledge and interest, but I love the gym and fitness, I own multiple businesses and drive a car people think is "fancy" but really is just the best option for my car use. As a relatively jacked guy whenever I enter "nerd" spaces, which is people with similar interests to me, again, and start talking equally to people and showing that I know things, I always get treated poorly and ostracized. I don't know why, and one of the workers recently started going to my gym and despite him being a constant literal nightmare holier than thou douche to me, I literally always say hello to him, encourage him, am polite, because I LOVE seeing people start going to the gym and working on themselves, and it's the funniest thing, this dude who is the stereotype assistant manager on a power trip at his job where I would come in as a regular customer often (until the ONE nice employee talked to me about our personal collections, genuinely the nicest coolest dude, only one that isn't a stuck uo douche), is the meekest shyest dude in the WORLD at the gym, and I'm genuinely just always being kind and welcoming to him, and it's so funny to me to see the distinction.
It's also that I personally own a business of buying selling and trading all manner of things but primarily electronics and mainly retro mainly pokemon video games, nothing crazy, like it isn't even 6 figures of revenue a year, just a side business I'm passionate about and that let's me have an outrageous dream collection of all manner of games in all different states that I constantly sit on without it ever being a waste of money because I'm constantly moving inventory in and out, so if im playing soulsilver for a month with the pokewalker, it doesn't matter, I can hold onto it while selling other copies and then when I move on, I can sell that copy and get play let's say colloseum on an XD wrapped GameCube etc, but they HATED me from day 1, which was so weird because when I started living in this area I had come from a place where store owners LOVED me because I'd regularly buy lots of their inventory and high ticket items to sell myself and they happily worked with me.
Cybertron is the ONLY place that has treated me like garbage, it is absolute trash, and what's worse is I've spoken to the owner on numerous occasions and he was always a friendly guy.
Couldn't give a worse review if I tried, genuinely the worst business I've ever had the displeasure of visiting. And I really tried, I went dozens of times, didn't spend that much, probably less than 2k if I had to guess but in that industry that's quite a bit for 1 individual customer, but if like EVERY OTHER game store in the world they'd worked with me and been business minded with a focus on good customer service, we could have had a fantastic relationship. But no, they're genuinely a 0.1/10
@@MediumDSpeaks Very weird, because for me they are always really friendly. In Winter Park, there's the woman and the son of the owner specifically who are always really helpful to me. In Sanford, there's the dark-skinned woman who's amazing, too. I've never had problems, and I always see them nice to other customers too, making small talk, etc
Also their prices match eBay most of the time. In fact, that's how they get their prices - it derives from eBay's most recently sold options

Yeah from day 1 they've treated me like an absolute opp any time I've gone in. They once mentioned that anyone who "resells" games is not allowed in the store, and I was like, what that's your entire business model, and the fundamental act of collection necessitates a constant intake and output either through money or exchange of other collectibles. They mistake having a business, somehow, with bring a scalper who buys thing they know nothing and care nothing about to then resell at extortionate rates. This is such a disgusting thing to think, because fundamentally to perform well in ANY market you need to care a great deal to stay on top of what things accurately cost and find profitable deals, and for video games as collectibles specifically, you HAVE to be passionate and care a great deal to know what has value and why, and have an encyclopedic knowledge of quality, validity, and many other super niche factors of games (as with any collectible) to collect, buy, sell and trade them.
Ans you can go on youtube and watch tons of great channels of people who are video game "resellers" (which, literally every business is "re-selling" I do not get how that word has come to mean "scalper who cares nothing for the products they must know enough about to make a living from") that have incredibly positive relationships with video game store owners who fundamentally are themselves video game "re-sellers" with overhead.
Really, just from day 1 it was toxicity, vitriol, just overall hatred pointed at me every time I went in. Couldn't have an enjoyable conversation with anyone, they act so much like they just hate their job, or hate me personally and can't wait for me to leave, until that ONE guy that I spoke to at length for about 20 minutes, and when I bring up a trip to Tampa where I bought out an incredible collection of complete and sealed pokemon games, and he shows interest in one particular game from what I got, boom, I get banned!
Whats great is I went to gametime cards and they constantly work with people who collect buy sell and trade trading cards and form great relationships, and the one nice employee from cybertron was there, and he got to tell me he GOT IN TROUBLE which is insane for talking to me about my games. I confirmed with him that all the people there hate me and spoke badly of me, by the way, this isn't just some insecure conspiracy, I literally confirmed it witb him. He told me the next time I went I'd be banned, so I made sure to come in and get everything on the shelves I had ever wanted and upon leaving, lo and behold, I was followed out and "confronted" by the glasses guy with the Napoleon complex, Julio, where he revelled in telling me the "owner" heard about my conversation and was "very upset" and banned me from the store.
Absolutely insane, truly.

Approximately a year ago I finally completed the generation 3 national pokedex in my childhood copy of Pokemon Sapphire and my goal was to do it as authentically as possible as well. I basically did everything that you have done except purchase Pokemon Box. I even obtained wishmaker Jirachi and the Bonus disc celebi, but I couldn't find any authentic way to obtain deoxys and mew. I couldn't leave my dex with two holes in it, so I decided to use the same Pomeg berry glitch that you mention to generate a Deoxys in my emerald copy, and I could have done the same thing for Mew, but since I can obtain Mew in My Pokemon Ranch on the Wii, I decided to transfer everything to my platinum and complete the gen 4 national dex instead. Now I've decided to complete the National dex in my Pokemon White 2 because I acquired an authentic shiny genesect on a JP version of Pokemon black on ebay which blew my mind. Also I have a friend who may be able to get a hold of a lost one's childhood Keldeo and I would like to honor that.

Damn I just did that on a whim six or so years ago. Got 382/386 from ground up with all the childhood games, added a Deoxys still kicking around on an save file, and ended at 383. Only ones I missed were Mew, Celebi, and...Slowking. Still have to get one of those.

Ain't gonna lie bro. I'm excited for you but also jelly you got a copy of BOX. I have been chilling with my gen 3 Pokedex on my copy of Emerald for about 7 years. Only missing Celebi, Deoxys and Mew. I have mine split between Emerald and a memory card devoted to XD for the rest, since it had more box room compared to Colliseum.

The video gave me flashbacks. I owned a copy of pre order pokemon coliseum for years and got out of pokemon for a while and got rid of it (and many other original pokemon games) only to find out I was sitting on a unicorn. STILL bothers me to this day but hey hindsight is 20/20
This got me interested into seeing how my old games files where looking!
My old Fire Red Psyical cartridge stands at over 290 Pokemon caught in the Pokedex!
Not only that, but it's the same save file I had, when I attended a 10th anniversary event in the UK back in like 2005, where you could download one of the top 10 ranked Pokemon at the time, as many times as you liked. These included both Ho-oh and Lugia, which have the OT of 10ANNIV. Sadly Celebi and Mew were not at this event. But I have caught data on the Pokedex for Mew. I must have traded with someone, then traded back.

FireRed and leaf green won't allow it unfortunately. You'll have to put into the other gen 3 games to do so
I won't have Celebi or the two event Pokemon, but I have all the other games and have been slowly doing this for decades. I've even caught each type of unknown. A few more runs and I'll have it, but I'm strangely not in any rush.
13:17 minor detail, wii is also in 480i/480p and unable to display 720p. the visual difference is likely from a much better video cable on your wii, which is _wayyy_ easier to find than the $300 gamecube component cable
Reproduction GameCube component cables now exist and HDMI adaptors for the GameCube/Wii are also a thing for anyone that wants to look into them.

Love seeing people be passionate about Pokémon, especially my fav gen! I was only able to play these games through emulators since my parents couldn't afford to get me and my siblings video games and all that. Never completed the dex legitimately. Big feat for sure! Congrats! :)

Fun fact, you don’t actually need a Japanese game cube to play Japanese game cube games. If you soft mod the wii you can bypass the region requirement all together
Not gonna Lie that was 30 Minutes worth of my time Congratulations on achieving this moment also yes you did have to spend 1700 dollars for that Pokemon Storage Box Disc but think of it as an Investment cause its only harder to find the same for your other Japanese GameCube Games and discs

$1700 for one non-game is inaaane. And I thought I was crazy for spending over $500 on a Gamecube with GC Loader built-in, just to run Pokemon Box and the other Gamecube games without the discs lol
Omg I had this too with leaf green :( just restarted recently with pokemon because this destroyed it for me. Lost my first lvl 100s pokemon, almost or full pokedex idk it was horrible. Lost my best ruby pokemon too it was devasting. 300h in leaf green gone.
But finslly restarted with omega ruby and its really fine! Currently on soulsilver, I appreciate that its a bit harder and can't wait to visit kanto again. Catching the garados tomorrow
So nostalgic. Congrats! My friend and i completed our emerald dexes back in school. He managed to go to the events through his parents being generous and rewarding his good grades. Unfortunately the limited event pokemon where cloned at the battle factory and transfered to me but thats my exception. I grinded xd gale of darkness and colleseum while he was at the events and was extremely forunate my unlce is a game store owner so the japanese copies and japanese gamecube where very easy to acquire. I still have my pokemon box but i probably wont for long considering i remember getting it for like 20 bucks and now seeing it go for 1700 i can ditch that part of my childhood for that 😂

I quit playing at gen 4 but i definitely put most hours into Ruby growing up. We’re getting old🥴 i just hit 30 myself. Might finally have to give XD gale of darkness a shot.
I hate the old pokemon events with passion. Imagine living in edge of Europe and these events pop in.... Spain, France etc. It's not like it's few states away, you need to ask your family to go on big trip abroad and you bet they will say no to that because who travels around the world for one day pokemon event.

I don’t consider any way of getting deoxys or mew cheating. Bringing it to just 3 states was cheating people out of it to begin with. it should have never been locked behind an event like that. Should have been another disc or something similar to jirachi if anything at all.

I did this back with 3\4gen I bought Emerald/firered/Co/XD Tho I knew for 3gen id be SoL of the last four I played emerald 3x fired 3x for all starters and roaming legendarys, lucky I got all the the 4gen events with d/p/p but I did but Pokemon ranch for my own new
After 4gen I never bothered completing pieces ever again
Cool video Gen 3 was the generation I started with back in 2003 Ruby version and like you never had access to the events cause I simply didn't know they existed, also there is another way you could have gotten the Celebi Disc/Japanese Colossuem disc to work on your US GameCube if you bought either a freeloader or Action Replay disc you could trick your console to play the foreign region game but I'd still recommend using a different Memory card just to be safe. the freeloader does work I did it on my UK Gamecube here in the United Kingdom not to sure about the action replay but I heard it could be used not to sure how
Eon Ticket is more a pain as you need a US E-reader which for me in the UK was a real pain to find luckily did find one seller in my country selling one never mind the cost of the Eon Ticket itself unused

Bro you are crazy but also hilarious love the video I did a legit kanto dex on leaf green in 2022 & got the legendaries using a hacked Wii and GameCube to game boy link cable that can rewrite save files & just injected the event tickets into the leaf green cart, I also downloaded Pokemon box on the hacked Wii haha love the dedication tho

In February 2016 my friend owned his own retro game shop and I helped him host a shiny Mew event over one weekend. The local big chain of game shops, "Game", were giving away a regular mew so we had to one-up them lol I remember making it as "legit" as possible, got it from a Japanese copy of Emerald with the old sea map, I made the OT the same name as his shop but in the Japanese characters, cloned like 3 boxes of them on ORAS and we gave almost all of them away, good times haha and I still have one! Great video btw, loved every minute of it.

This is why I just hacked my 3DS and emulate on my computer and phone. These prices are rediculous. Someone needs to transfer this method to an all PC based system with DLC and just make it legally distinct from pokemon. But man, some of these other monster catching games are hard to enjoy.
When I did this I manually traded everything to emerald. I also used the gb operator to make backups of my saves and added the mythicals with PK hex because I was too cheap to buy bonus disc.

I know this video is a month old at this point but I wanted to add some info since I haven't seen anyone else say it. If you consider using roms of past events legit there was a 10th anniversary distribution that was UK only (so that may break rules for you depending your viewpoint) but with this you can send a legit 10ANNIV Charizard, Pikachu, Articuno, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-oh, Latias and Latios to Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, LeafGreen or FireRed.
I probably won’t be able to start till my 30s either so props to you my guy gen 3 is my absolute favorite even tho I started with gen 1 when I found a pokemon yellow on the street that couldn’t save 🥹 had my gameboy on for hours beating it but Hoenn is where my heart is at

I'm probably going to do my gen 4 and 5 dexes sometime soon, but I don't think I will ever do the gen 3 dex because it would be either very expensive or a lot of typing in japanese for ace since I only have one copy of emerald in japanese and no gbas.

Gen 3 was actually the first time Gamefreak did a Dexit.
It was also really bad too considering it IS possible to transfer Pokemon from Gen 1 / Gen 2 into Gen 3
Unfirtunately Im UK based so it doesn't apply to me but that doesn't take any appreciation away from the fact that the offer you've given people there is absolutely outstanding and generous! Well done for helping people live out the chances to get certain pokemon they could have only dreamed of as kids!
Secondly, what a great video, very educational on how and where to get all the pokemon and its great to see the rewards you get for completion! Im personally slugging through trying to 'complete' the national pokedex on emerald, EV train and lvl 100 every mon and do some shiny hunting in the background and am fully aware I may meed to find some 'alternate methods' at the end for some unobtainable pokemon. Crazy how I just done this four years ago during the peak hours of C-19 lol. Luckily for me I was a massive poke maniac, as I had all of those games. The only thing I had to spend my money on was the Japanese copy of Sapphire, Colosseum, "Bonus Disc" and Game Cube.
For the original releases I had to purchase the US bonus disc and since I had found two of them for a reasonable deal I purchased two sets.
I had already nearly completed my Dex on all five copies with emerald being my favorite I was only like four Pokemon away from completing my National Dex.
All that left me was also Deoxy and Mew, so I purchased an action replay and used my second copy of Pokemon Emerald to inject the event key items for naval rock, Southern island, birth island, and far away island. After capturing those two legendaries to my main emerald I had officially completed my National Dex Legitimately.
I did the Latios and Deoxy battles as a kid through an emulation and cheats and it STILL was a surreal and intense experience, I could only imagine how you felt doing it all legitimately.
Now that you completed this ... What stops you from moving everything to the next gen and complete that dex aswell
