  • Here is how focus peaking works on the Samsung NX1. It's not quite as easy as you might think but it works just the same.
    The adapter I am using is available at B&H Photo: www.bhphotovide...

    Someone posted this video in the NX1 group on Facebook, and I replied there thinking it was the poster's video, but since it's not, I'll post here as well on the state of things now with the latest firmware update:
    Peaking will still always go off when you touch the shutter button (you didn't mention this in the video though). But you could then, and now, turn on the 5x and 8x zoom-in while using manual lenses if you turn it on AND hit the OK button (It then turns on the zoom-in instead of peaking). But now you can map peaking on/off to other buttons, like the FoV preview button on the front of the camera between the lens and the grip. This lets you very easily turn it on when needed, and it lets you even turn peaking on while recording videos using the EVF which you couldn't before. Why they just don't let us have peaking on until we turn it off, I have no idea, but being able to turn in on and off with the FoV preview button makes things a lot easier than before. I also wish they would fix the peaking so it's not just on lines vertical to the camera (if you turn peaking on in front of your guitar there, and rotate the camera 90 degrees, you'll see what I mean).

    Thanks for the video. Good to know this is available during movie mode if you wanna use non samsung lenses this will be helpful for focusing.

    Just a suggestion: put camera on tripod for reviews on focusing.

    If you get the ATG Gold Adapter (CHLNS), then you will get ATG AF, MF Peaking, F-Stop display on cameras.
    This lens adapter is not cheap and many can't afford them.
    It's four times more than the crappy Metalbone adapter.
    ATG suggests if you are a beginner & using Canon:
    1. Buy regular Canon to Samsung lens adapter.
    2. Need to adjust F stop, place EF lenses on Canon body- press DOF, adjust F-Stop,
    then remove lenses.
    Place lenses on adapter.
    Shooting modes can be in "Av or M".
    3. Buy Nikon to Canon EF adapter & Canon EF to Samsung adapter.
    Use Nikon AI, AIS or AF lenses that have F-Stop ring.
    A Canon nor Nikon body is not needed.
    4. Only beginners always wanting AF and not wanting to learn & using the focusing ring.
    5. Connect camera to computer & run the Samsung tethered software.
    ATG tethered provides a much larger viewfinder (by your laptop)... but this is
    way to advanced that many pros are lost.
    My staff have no problem with using the ATG Gold CAN to SAM Adapter on Samsung NX1 with the awesome ATG Canon EF200-400/2.8L IS II with built-in Extender.
    Here are the specs on ATG Canon EF200-400/2.8L IS II with built-in Extender on Canon:
    * ATG Canon EOS-1D Cr, Canon EOS-1D C & Canon EOS-1D X, ATG Canon EOS-5D IIr.
    - 200-400 at F2.8 (extender at rest)
    - 280-560 at F3.92 (extender active/engaged, it's faster than 500/4.0, 60mm from 600)
    * Canon EOS-7D Mark II
    - 320-640 at F2.8
    - 448-896 at F3.92
    For ATG EF200-400 w/x lenses with ATG Gold CAN-SAM Adapter on Samsung NX1:
    - 300-600/F2.8
    - 420-840/F3.92 (extender engaged)
    * ATG AF speed is just as fast as if the lenses is attached to Canon camera body.
    * ATG IS from 300-600 & 420 zoom to 840mm!
    * ATG adjustable & F-Stop is showing on EVF or LCD or ATG Live-View on computer!
    * ATG 15fps @ F2.8 or F3.92 (or set camera in "M" and adjust the F-Stop with 500+)
    * Using ATG AK1 Un-Tethered System, camera can shoot wirelessly from computer,
    plus ATG AF touch screen on computer screen (expanding the AF by a finger!)
    ATG says the Samsung NX1 is the only camera in the world that has a large sensor with a touch-screen on the LCD screen.
    * One can use the screen for quick pick AF
    * Shooting tethered, one can override the camera AF and touch AF point on computer.
    * Shooting wirelessly using the awesome ATG AK1 Un-Tethered System.
    * ATG AK1 Un-Tethered System transforms camera that tethered to become wirelessly.
    * You can use the ATG AK1 Un-Tethered System on Canon, Hasselblad, Leica, Nikon,
    Olympus, Sony and Samsung. It has built-in wireless radio flash trigger.

    while using the adapter, are you forced to shoot wide open? Is there any way to control aperture?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 лет назад

      The adapter for Canon is manual with no electronic communication so no aperture control so wide open only unfortunately

      +Dan Watson If you have a Canon body handy, you can set the aperture, then dismount the lens, and it will keep that setting. Kind of kludgy and a pain, but it is possible.

    I'm just sitting here waiting for smart adapters to come for Samsung mounts so I can actually use the AF and other things. I think you have to keep doing this simply because there is no communication from lens to body.

    all Samsung has to do is release firmware that allows one to have focus peaking on all the time. it seems like it only turns on when the camera knows you are trying to focus, but with an adapter, and no electronic communication, it never knows.
    I bought this camera about a week ago and so far happy with it, sure there are a few issues, but so far they have all been software, that hopefully will be addressed in firmware updates.

    Hi,
    I haven't tried it with a native lens, but, indeed, pressing the OK button on the NX300 will activate focus assist with a 3rd party manual focus lens attached via an adapter. However, moving the magnified area isn't possible, try what I will.
    Do you know if that's the case with the NX500 / NX1, and if so, is there a remedy to the issue?
    Thank you.

      @learningcameras  9 лет назад

      Yep, just turn off focus assist. It's one of the menu options in the photo menu tab. You can turn it off, set it to 5x, or 10x zoom. You can even map the settings to a button for faster access if you need to change it often.

    I had a feeling when I watched your last video that you just didn't know how to make it work, and I really wish that you would figure these things out before making your video, but I know it's easier said then done, because you want to get your video out fast, anyway I still want to see a really in depth test of the focusing system, and for all the Nikon and Canon fanboys, this NX1 is maybe the coolest camera to come out in years, and I wish that Nikon or Canon would try to make a mirrorless camera as nice as this Samsung, from what I hear, the 28mp back lit senor, is better than any other apsc sensor on the market, better than the D7100, or 7Dll, in every way, dynamic range, ISO, and resolution, the camera has an articulating Touch screen, Wi fi, internal 4k, an amazing focusing system, it's weather sealed, and weighs like 300 grams less than the Nikon and Canon equivalent, Compare that to the D7100 and 7Dll, they don't have wi fi, no 4k, no touch screen, no focus peaking, and they weigh like 300 grams more, if Samsung keeps going in this direction, they will dominate the camera market in a few years, just like they did in the TV and Cell Phone market, and Companies like Canon will find themselves in trouble trying to play catch up, because they spent to much time trying to protect there DSLR market instead of going mirorless, witch is the future of cameras

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 лет назад

      Yeah, so I try to do as much prep as possible in that I read the manuals and do all the research available. Unfortunately since I am one of the first hands on with the camera, we are all figuring this stuff out together. That's why I ended the video opening up for discussion to my subscribers for tips and thanks to some of them who owned the camera, I was able to correct it. I always try to issue corrections right away and I think you can admit that the way focus peaking is implemented, it is easy to see how this would be missed. Unfortunately I can't edit the video once posted unlike a blog post. That said I'm loving the NX1 so far for all those things you have mentioned.

    Hey Dan, I can't seem to find the specs for this since it's discounted like I want. I basically just want a cheap 4k camera where I can record my guitar videos for right now. How is the HIGH Iso? Does it shoot 100Mbps 4k?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      I believe the ISO goes to 12,800 but it starts to look bad above 1600 and I wouldn't use it above 3200 for anything meaningful. Yes, I believe the top bitrate is 100Mbps and it definitely shoots 4k. You might also look at the Sony A6300. Shoots 4k, 100mbps, a little better in low light, and it isn't discontinued!

    • @nagol5178
      @nagol5178 8 лет назад

      Yeah but I hear the Alias and Moire and Jello effect is bad on the A6300. With this camera being discounted I can find one really cheap with a lens. I'm gonna get the Mark 4 in a few months and probably just buy a Sony camera again. However I've seen this thing on Ebay with the kit lens for hardly nothing. I figured it might work for what I want to do with it. I wanted the Sony A6300 until people claimed you couldn't walk with it due to the jello. Is that over stated or is it really that bad?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      So, jello is bad on it but I wouldn't say it's much worse than the NX1....or most other large sensor cameras.

    • @nagol5178
      @nagol5178 8 лет назад

      Eh, I'll probably just wait then. I miss my 4k Sony video camera, I sold it to buy the 24-70 2.8 ii for photography. I'm gonna buy another one. I liked using it a lot more than a stills camera for video. It's looking more and more like I'm just gonna have to use two separate cameras unlike the 5D Mark iii days. I still plan on getting the 5D Mark IV but it's so much more enjoyable doing video with something like the Sony AX100 or PXW-X70.

    • @SayWhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

      it can record 4k at 320Mb/s if you use hack. and remeber its h.265 codec so its like 700Mb/s in h.264 terms :)

      photographerjonathan actually sounds like you are biased to Samsung instead. It's a great camera but just too raw at the moment. Dynamic range is awful and weird iso performance is a deal breaker. Hopefully for Samsung they can fix those issues with firmware update. However uncertainty will keep me away. $1700 is quite a bit for raw product. I don't pay vendors then do product qa for them.

    • @learningcameras

      phavn Why is dynamic range bad on the NX1...seems pretty good to me. Definitely seems better than the Canon APS-C cameras I use and potentially way better. I also think noise performance is very good even up to 6400 ISO and looks amazing at 1600 ISO. I've enjoyed the NX1 so far.
