A small point that pertains to Gluttony: don’t be rude to sound engineers. I once played a show where one of the opening band’s singer started arguing with the sound guy during their set because the engineer was requesting that the singer sing louder since he couldn’t be heard by the audience. The singer goes on to make a big deal out and everyone is just standing there awkward and confused. Great video as always!
dude the “sloth” section hit hard. i spent 4 years working on an album and towards the end i realized i was being a perfectionist to an annoying degree. set a release date for myself, forced myself to finish that shit, and now i’ve written either a full or partial song every week since it came out last month. sucks knowing just how much time i killed working on those same 10 songs but it was an important lesson in not being a perfectionist. also we’re now playing shows, having fun, making friends, gaining traction, etc. and it’s reminded me why i started playing music in the first place. music is the coolest thing ever

The gluttony part is so real. I made a 6 minute song just for the sake of it being long that only had one good part and it ended up ruining something great. Don’t make the same mistake I did.
Cover bands are good for weddings and parties and stuff if you want a specific band to play, but, obviously, the million dollar band isn't in your budget
sloth is definitely the most important sin to avoid, like there is no excuse to NOT be making music when programs like garageband exist. squash those fears and download it, you can learn the basics in a day! it makes me sad thinking about how many people out there could be musicians but aren’t, when all that’s holding them back is picking up an instrument or opening up a DAW.
Yeah but the whole process is absolute aids. Its expensive and complicated to make things sound good.. I want to make music but buying good quality microphones, guitars, basses and music software is just too much money. I do agree with your point though.
@@hemirarris You don't necessarily need anything remotely expensive to start off. I've made all my music with just a 100$ Snowball mic, a 150$ guitar and garageband for free. You can build up better gear over time.

Ik a guy here in FL who’s friends with ADTR and he tells stories about how before they made it big, they’d literally play for peoples bday in their back yards for like 50 bucks (for the whole band) and a slice of cake, and even for free just to do a friend a favor for a party and stuff. He says how chill and nice they are as people and how they’re still the same guys they were back in HS, that the fame didn’t change them and inflate their egos.
the thing about them having a cute dog being payment is so real. getting to have dog time (or cat time!) on tour is genuinely so relaxing during a fun but stressful experience

I should have just made the songs separate and just had them put back to back in the album. But, the good thing about music is, as well as art in general, there's always more to explore.
First band I was in during high school I was kicked out and one thing my guitarist said was "you only do favors for people cause I expect something back in return" and I'm like you mean music business??? Like yeah if I book a band I'm friends with i'd hope they consider me when doing the same that's literally how making connections works! I always wanna help those who have helped me and vice versa treat others how you want to be treated its all love

Mannnn idk if youre gonna see this but its so cool how your content keeps coming back in my life. In like 5th grade I first saw your freshman year survival guide and I was like, its gonna be in forever but the night before the first day of highschool, Im gonna rewatch this video again. That time flew by and I did end up rewatching that video right before I went to bed the night before freshman year. Im becoming a sophmore this year (and ofc Im gonna do the same with your sophmore year video). Pretty recently I picked up guitar to join a band with my friend, when before I had no interest in music. The band obviously didnt end up working out, but I did discover that I really do enjoy music. I started enjoying more of the emo and punk type stuff (modern baseball, american football, the flat stanleys etc etc) so I was really surprised to see you make content on band stuff specifically in the style of music I really dig. I rewatch the how to start a band video and it always gets me pumped up to pick up my notebook and write my shitty lyrics until they become not so shitty so I can find a band and start playing house shows and all that stuff. TL;DR: Thank you Edit: I am in a band now after 5 months and were pretty good. Also Racoon Tour is awesome.
I really liked the video Nate, you had some great advice here. I just finished up my band I had during high school (we were called lizard people, music on Spotify and stuff if you’re curious) and now I want to start a more serious band and hopefully tour one day. The stuff you said about how important it is to focus on making good songs and getting true fans is totally correct. I was able to get a few real fans with my band somehow, so ik that if I find the right bandmates and work hard enough I think I could get even more listeners. Also I didn’t know it was bad to coil cables on stage so thanks for the tip.

What do I do if, when I decide to write songs, most of them sound the same as the songs I enjoy listening to? I want nothing more than to create original songs, share them with friends and an audience, and I’m fine with doing nothing but basement shows of five people for the rest of my life, but I don’t want to make unintentional carbon copy songs anymore. I just don’t know what to do.
Nothing is original, music is about your personal expression, not about your originality. But if you can’t get past this mindset, delve into theory (specifically harmony and arrangement) make the sound of the band what makes it unique or borrow harmonic concepts from outside your genre. All that matters about your music is that it gets made and it is yours, because the fact that you made it, is what makes it original.
Something will already sound like something. Music has been around for thousands if not millions of years. Someone has already used that chord progression or came up with that riff or whatever. Just make what makes you happy and don't be so set on being 100% original
i have a few friends who play instruments, and ive been meaning to get them all together to jam some of them i like, some of them i dislike, but being able to look past that and see that they are good musicians makes it all the more worthwhile to try to get to know them better this video actually really helped me with how i view the music scene, what my mindset about my bandmates is, and how to work together well and just be good people in general so thamks

It's so funny to me that like, I watched your video about how to be in a band years ago, then I saw Raccoon Tour at the Undercroft (on that tour that went on too long) without realizing you were Nateislame, and then I come home after another show there where I was talking about how I saw your band without realizing you were Nateislame, and there this video is in my recommendations.
"If you are making music that is intended to be consumed and appreciated by other people, write music for other people." I dont fully agree with this statement. Although I do agree with the concept of performing for the audience and not yourself/keeping the audience in mind at some point during the writing process. But as far as "who" the songs are written for it is certianly not the audience. I write songs because I seek a creative outlet and a way to express frustrations, trauma, cool experiences, concepts etc. Of course before the song is performed there will be some structuring and such to make the song the most enjoyable and appealing it can be to a general audience. It was not written "for them". Maybe i'm looking too deep into it though who knows but thats just my perspective as it stands right now.

Gear Generosity really helps. I remember going to this independent festival and the singer of this Shoe Gazey Alternative had something go wrong with her Gretsch or something. The guitarist/lead singer of the headlining band let her borrow his brand new Wylde Audio Warhammer. It’s was one of the sweetest, nicest but hilarious things I’ve ever seen on the scene. She was like 5’2” 5’3” with this ginormous Metal guitar playing the shoegazey shit lmao

Celebrities aren't holding a gun to their fans heads and forcing them to sleep with them. People utilize their assets to make themselves more attractive to potential partners. This is something that even happens in nature and the animal kingdom and is nothing to be ashamed of because everybody does it to an extent. I'm sure if a girl you had a crush on said she likes men who have youtube channels, you wouldn't withhold that information from her because using your status as a youtuber would be a "loser" thing to do. So if a woman says she likes rich, famous musicians, then why wouldn't the rich, famous musician use that status of his to attract the woman? Should he lie and pretend he's a nobody? My band was going pretty strong, my solo stuff was ...coming out lol but i had a kid and had to start a family and were single income so i had to get a soul crushing type job to barley get by and now music is hard to find time for even though its my biggest soul passion. Not wrapping your cables on stage is insane. For my band at least. it's full of AV technicians we don't want to waste time untangling the cables and the wrapping them back up. I think a lot of musicians could benefit from learning a bit of cable management and practicing a bit of speed when setting up and tearing down.

I dont fully agree with this statement. Although I do agree with the concept of performing for the audience and not yourself/keeping the audience in mind at some point during the writing process. But as far as "who" the songs are written for it is certianly not the audience. I write songs because I seek a creative outlet and a way to express frustrations, trauma, cool experiences, concepts etc. Of course before the song is performed there will be some structuring and such to make the song the most enjoyable and appealing it can be to a general audience. It was not written "for them". Maybe i'm looking too deep into it though who knows but thats just my perspective as it stands right now.

I remember going to this independent festival and the singer of this Shoe Gazey Alternative had something go wrong with her Gretsch or something. The guitarist/lead singer of the headlining band let her borrow his brand new Wylde Audio Warhammer. It’s was one of the sweetest, nicest but hilarious things I’ve ever seen on the scene. She was like 5’2” 5’3” with this ginormous Metal guitar playing the shoegazey shit lmao

@@NateIsLame getting to the status of being famous/successful enough to sleep with a bunch of beautiful women is an incredibly Herculean, almost impossible task to achieve that 99% of people who try will never achieve. The lucky few who actually achieve that status should be rewarded with sleeping with beautiful fans (consensually of course). Status has been a thing since the beginning of humankind and it comes with many great rewards, sleeping with many beautiful women being one of them.
Women aren’t a prize or reward, they’re people. And if the only way you can sleep with people is to have power over them… you’re a loser unfortunately. I’d argue folks who need money and fame to sleep with folks are bigger losers than normal people.

Women choose to sleep with famous people on their own free will, whether it be for clout or to brag to their friends or whatever reason. Women themselves are treating themselves like prizes to famous people because I promise you these same women wouldn't be throwing themselves to janitors or fast food cashiers. Celebrities aren't holding a gun to their fans heads and forcing them to sleep with them. Some women are attracted to high status men just like some men are attracted to women with blonde hair or bigger breasts. Saying men are losers for using their celebrity status to attract women is like saying women are losers for using makeup or push-up bras to attract men.
People utilize their assets to make themselves more attractive to potential partners. This is something that even happens in nature and the animal kingdom and is nothing to be ashamed of because everybody does it to an extent.
I'm sure if a girl you had a crush on said she likes men who have youtube channels, you wouldn't withhold that information from her because using your status as a youtuber would be a "loser" thing to do. So if a woman says she likes rich, famous musicians, then why wouldn't the rich, famous musician use that status of his to attract the woman? Should he lie and pretend he's a nobody?
At the end of the day, it's two consenting, sound-of-mind adults making a decision to make love to each other. I'm not sure why you're being so judgemental about that.

My band was going pretty strong, my solo stuff was ...coming out lol but i had a kid and had to start a family and were single income so i had to get a soul crushing type job to barley get by and now music is hard to find time for even though its my biggest soul passion. Not wrapping your cables on stage is insane. For my band at least. it's full of AV technicians we don't want to waste time untangling the cables and the wrapping them back up. I think a lot of musicians could benefit from learning a bit of cable management and practicing a bit of speed when setting up and tearing down.
The time you’re saving by wrapping cables onstage is time lost from the band coming after you. Wrap your cables off stage.
