This early PS4 gets stuck at the PS logo and won't boot! Can I Fix It?

- This video is all about a PS4 that originally had a problem with games freezing and randomly shutting down. That eventually turned in to it not booting at all!
Will i be able to get this one working again and bring it back to life, or is it destined for the bin?!

Just to note that if you have this problem and you initialize the ps4 with the original hard drive, it will likely fix the problem. However, if the hard drive is faulty, despite a successful initialization, the hard drive will likely fail again at some point. It may not be immediate. So, I would suggest if this happens twice with the same hard drive, replace it.
I have a PS4 base or the very first model of PS4 Unit. I did encounter this issue. And I've been thinking to upgrade my hard drive to SSD. Would that solve the Black screen issue?

I've tried all the safe mode options but I can't get past the ps logo. Idk if I'm being too impatient or my hard drive is the issue. All the cables and ports look fine. I've let it chill it for like twenty minutes each time I do a safe mode option. This is my fifth time resetting my ps4 pro in the past year or so :(

I got my ps4 pro for next to nothing due to them selling it as broke sure it sounded like a jet and shut down but it was working. After full clean and fresh paste works beautifully even when running god of war for hours on hard mode 😣😬
My console starting doing this two days ago and it kept flashing the blue light of death and it got stuck in the logo bootloop or it would turn on and say that it's checking system storage status. I just now got past the logo but now it says all of my purchased games disappeared. Luckily I booted up my PS5 and all of my games are still in my collection at least.
Just a suggestion, but if you have a PC try installing Hard Disk Sentinel Pro (Trial version) and checking SMART status of the PS4 drive by plugging that into a SATA port on your PC's motherboard. If the health is below 90% you will most likely experience HDD issue's (e.g. bad sectors which have been re-located etc) and consider replacing before it completely fails.

I can get in safe mode but eventho my USB cable is plugged and it is the right cable, my ps button doesn't work in both controller. It doesn't get in the safe mode selections. I don't know what to do. I'm stucked three.
Got past the initialize part but the screen went black and I could hear the music. Any ideas?
Yea that happened to my ps4 hard drive so i have to get an new hard drive and initialize it, but i have an q,is it possible to get ur old games and stuff back, through the settings?
You'll have to redownload your digital games from your library. Sadly it doesn't automatically restore them. You don't lose them though. 👍
By the way you don't mention that there's two update files one is the full on install from scratch and ones if the drive has a older version of the os. 🙃
So I just replaced my hdd, and I got to downloading some apps. Game froze and went into safe mode. I then had to reapply the update via USB drive. Then when it tried to boot up it started to do the power off after logo.

I have the early PS4 and mine did this when the power button got stuck lol.. The peg for the button fell out and was lost tho.
Iv tried all the safe mode options and even done the USB update worked fine for a couple days maybe 2 weeks at max and now it's freezing during game play constantly going into safe mode and telling me install USB and can't get past logo any more

Rebuilding the database doesn’t actually take a few hours it’s actually way quicker than that
My experience is similar, yet it could take hours if you have lots of content saved on the console.
My ps4 would also have the black screen problem but I was able to use my console for 3 days due to the reinstallation file than I had the problem again but in those 3 days my ps4 would freeze and it was very slow and even made some of my games slow and I keep hearing its due to the hard drive. Should I replace it?

I already initialized my PS4 twice in the last 6 months and I don't plan on doing it again. I'm having an issue with my ps powers on and I get the logo then black screen. I've been told by numerous individuals that I will need to initialize it again. What can I do to not lose all my shit again?

I’ve been having the same problem but somehow managed to get the Sony after the ps logo but it froze on me during the setup😂😂 and I’m stuck on trying to figure out what I did to get that far 🙄
Interesting, it's possible that the hard drive is failing. Maybe you just got lucky that one time. I'd probably try swapping the hard drive out for a new one and see of it fixes the problem. 👍
Ok I got it but not sure how long it’s gonna work but I just initialized from safe mode and let the ps restart and just waited out the black screen and then the Sony logo came on I was just impatient I guess when I was setting up the system I hope this helps cuz I had a hell of a time as well

@Brian Oh no! I didn't think the PS5 would suffer from this so early! I have heard that the PS5 suffers from some HDMI "handshake" issues with some TV's, which can result in a black screen. It may be worth trying a different TV, HDMI cable or both, just to rule that out. Failing that, I'm sorry to say that you likely have a defective unit. It should still be under warranty so I wouldn't risk opening it up, I'd send it back to Sony! Especially if you've tried all the different resetting options from Safe Mode. Good luck! 👍

So if I initialize will my game saves be deleted as well? Like I’d have be at level 0 in all my games ?
I guess it depends where your saves are. If they are local to the HDD, then yeah, I'm pretty sure it'll wipe them! 😳 if they're backed up in cloud storage, you should be good.
How do I delete saved data from my PS4?
* Go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management. Choose either System Storage, Online Storage or USB Storage > Delete.
* Select a game and place ticks next to the files you wish to delete or Select All.
* Select Delete and then select OK to confirm your decision.
If I initialize, will it update the firmware?

Hi Carlos. If you have a steady blue light, then that's a hardware failure, so you have a problem on the motherboard. There are lots of potential causes. Have a look at The Cod3r RUclips channel, he has quite a few videos on this problem 👍

Hello I just fixed my brother ps4 following all tips from different resources
First I tried unplugging the TV and it still wouldn’t work
I went to safe mode and changed the resolution still nothing
I changed the HDC setting to not automatic and it still wouldn’t work
So finally I did the system software update waiting for that to load and it finally started to work
So I’m not sure if it was a combination of those things that made it work but it started to work again
When the screen came back on it did ask about my resolution so I suggest changing the resolution for sure
Final resort was initializing the PS4 thank God i didn’t have to do that and erase all of my brother gaming history

Bro my ps4 opens, shows the ps 4 logo for 20 seconds, then goes to a black screen, shows the screen for 5 minutes then stars turning on and off until it fully turns off by itself.( I tried everything in the safe mode; Restarting, updating system software, rebuilding database e.t.c NOTHING worked, my ps4 pro doesnt register commands!)
What do i do?
It remains in the open screen for 3 seconds then shuts down the screen, then this happens 6 times.
It shows that the ps4s database is corrupted so i tried to rebuild it with the command from the safe mode but it didnt work

When I boot my ps4 pro it shows the ps4 logo for like 20 seconds then a black screen for a minute then it switches of.. I've tried every thing with the safe mode nothing works and I've only had it a year... u figure its the hard drive?
Almost definitely 👍 I worked on a Pro the other week that was doing exactly that. A new HDD later and it was as good as new. Definitely worth a try. Good luck!

Mine goes black after the PS logo and then never goes to the screen where it says "Sony". I've rebuilt, initialized, all of that in safe mode. Nothing I do seems to work.
Have you tried a different hard drive? Sounds like it may need replacing 🤔

its not seeing the update because you didnt do the file folder names right,you have to make 2 folders and rename them all upper case and no spaces. first folder PS4 next folder name UPDATE putthe updte folder in the ps4 folder and then put pupu the new udate for sony in he update folder and bam thats it but after udateing my logo still goes to black screen
ended yo just being a dead drive so i bought an samsung ssd and threw that in there🙂

I went thru all this yesterday into last night and reinstalled the software and re-download fortnite and a cpl other games over night and woke up to the black screen again.so I safe mode rebooted it and it goes back to the ps logo and then flashes blue again.so somethings going on and is probably woth the hard drive like you originally thought

It's not early PS4, it's a last 3rd revision of PS4 Fat CUH-12xx release fall of 2015 (2 full years of presence PS4 on market) , the year before Slim/Pro launch.

This is actually not the very early model as the first models had glossy cover. First ones had touch buttons but this clearly has physical button.
Hard drive problem is caused by turning console off at the wrong time (it actually says it at the screen, not to turn off). Not sure why it turns it self off (I have similar problem). Sometimes games run for hours, sometimes it reboots after few minutes. I managed to move save game data to another console with help of new power source, so there is something definitely wrong with that. I bet you might get you wish to open the console again in near future.

My hard drive might be the issue because I most of the options in safe mode and nothing worked. I also tried initializing it but it didn't work either I just hear the ps4 noise in the blackground and the screen stays black and the blue light is still blinking
Hi James. If you can hear the PS4 startup sound, then that could be a problem with the HDMI cable, port or circuit. If the blue light stays on and doesn't go white, then it's most likely a problem inside. You can try swapping out the hard drive first, and see if it makes any difference, but it could be something more sinister in your case. Good luck 👍

@@ClipsOfTwitchhh Yeah it did thankfully I put in a new hard drive then I downloaded the reinstallation file onto the ps4. Everything's works nicely now, I recommend doing the same if you have the same issue

Hey man, i hope you can still help, so after I bought this game, it said it was corrupted and then a few days after that incident it crashed and is now messed up, it needs to restart every time I turn it on, then it boots up, shows the ps logo for a bit, and then a black screen, then boom, it just turns off and I'm desperate for answers!
Sounds like some data is corrupt on your hard drive. It's worth trying to rebuild the database through safe mode. Failing that, reinitialise it. And failing that replace it. Good luck 👍

Not entirely sure. Your hard drive is probably failing. Reinitialising it may have helped temporarily, but you may have to replace it.

Yes it does boot up to the ps logo but then it goes to the black screen again and again and I tried all the options

Unless you have been unlucky enough to get a faulty replacement hard drive, then I can only assume it's an issue somewhere on the motherboard. Hard to diagnose without seeing it, but you may have to send it in to be repaired.

StezStix I need help.
I have a ps4 pro model. That usually freezes at the ps logo on boot up 99% of time.
Weird thing is sometimes it also shuts down at this stage instead. When it does that you kinda hear a kind of s snap or zap. Almost like something component in the ps4 blew. Or some one just got shocked. Once it shuts down. I try to start it up again and the ps4 beeps but doesn't start up. Eventually I get it to boot up again. It freezes or shutsdown again like before.
So originally I thought it was a hard drive issue. I reinstalled and it worked but the ps4 wouldn't shutdown now. Great! What's next.
Eventually it started to freeze at the ps logo again. Nice back to square one.
I reinstalled again same exact weird result.
I checked the hard drive. Did read right tests the whole 9. Hard drive is fine!
Reformated drive reinstalled same exact issue.
Replaced drive with a newer throughly tested drive. Again exact same cycle of problems.
I have been working on this for days.
It can't be the hard drive.
Could it be the power supply?
Apu?
Satan controller?
I honestly have no idea where to go from here.
not sure if I can afford new parts especially if I don't know what the issue is.
I got ripped of buying this ps4 pro and I can't even seem to fix it even after buying a new hard drive and spending days on this.
To top it off I started to talk to technicians that do this kind of work and they r baffled too.
I need help or this ps4 is going to learn to fly from a 2nd story window.
Hi Derek. Wow, that is an unusual situation and definitely not something I've come across before. Going off the 'snap' you hear, that could be a coincidence as the plastic can expand when the system heats up a bit. If it's a loud snap or a pop, then I would suspect a short circuit. Possibly the power supply.
Having said all that, I'm just guessing. I know someone who will have a much better idea, hopefully he will see this. @TheCod3r . Definitely worth checking his channel out as he knows his stuff.

Yeah, if you don't get anywhere with safe mode, definitely try another hard disk. I did a PS4 Slim the other day and it was exactly like yours. A new hard drive later and it's as good as new. 👍

@@kingden2595 Ah, yes you will I think. You need the latest UPDATE.PUP file on a USB stick in order to install the latest software! Guess you'll need to ask someone with a PC/Laptop to help you out!

@@jojo2icy yeah, I replaced one in a PS4 Pro that was just over 12 months old. They seem to fail quite regularly 😳 It could always be something else causing a black screen but it's definitely one of the first things to check (with HDMI cables and ports) 👍

Thanks Louis! I can't say 100% because you might have a problem inside the console somewhere. But if you are getting the PS Logo, and a display on the screen, then i would say 90% of the time a new hdd will sort it out. The PS4 hdds are notorious for breaking down! Definitely worth a go.
