Thin Lizzy and UFO are the most under-appreciated bands in Rock history. They should be required listening for everyone regardless of your musical tastes!
Totally right Thin Lizzy is in my top 5 greatest bands and Phil Lynott one of the best front men in a band i have all there albums and there all great...
We knew how good they were in the U.K . First saw them supporting B.T.O when I was 13, they blew them away, a fate suffered by many 'A' list bands in the 70s when supported by Phil and the boys. The people who really knew rock always rated them as A league. Thanks for the post.
Thanks Pete for doing Thin Lizzy top 10 I love this band I was lucky to see them live in my home town Melbourne Australia on the CHINA TOWN TOUR keep rockin
1. Emerald 2. Borderline 3. Cowboy Song 4. Don’t Believe A Word 5. Waiting For An Alibi 6. Black Rose 7. Killer on the Loose 8. Little Girl in Bloom 9. Massacre 10. With Love
@@ivozanette7010 You can say that again!! Pete Pardo RULES!!! Just the way he talks about the songs makes me want to listen to them. I've listened to bands and singers I never even really liked and was like "Hey, this isn't so bad".
They’re my fourth favourite band of all time ! I mean how can they not be as big ( commercially ) as bands like Purple and Zeppelin which I would pretty much put at the same level. And they had everything, 6 great guitarists, a great singer !, complex riffy bass lines, a thunderous drummer !, and just everything !
I saw Thin Lizzy Eleven times between 1975 to 1983. Absolutely brilliant band. I think that to make an album called Thunder and Lightning and then call it a day just goes to show you that they had so much more to give.
2 of my favorite songs ... not mentioned. DIDDY LEVINE .... "Inheritance you see, runs through every family. Who's to say what is to be, is any better?" ..... "Over and Over It Goes. Goodness and badness wind blows. Over and Over, Over and Over. Over and Over and Over and Over....and Over. The Good Wind and the bad winds blow." What a beautiful song and story. Has brought tears to my eyes. THE HERO AND THE MADMAN. Another amazing Beatlesque song. Don't Believe A Word
Thx brother for taking time to pay homage to the late great Philip Lynott & Thin Lizzy...my favorite band for 30+ yrs. My top ten are but not limited to... She Knows Showdown Spirit Slips Away Romeo and the Lonely Girl Johnny Johnny the Fox meets Jimmy the Weed Got to Give it up Having a Good Time Renegade Baby Please Don't Go....RIP Rocker 1/4/86
How is your Top 10 not limited to 10? Good choices, though, except I always thought Having A Good Time was total filler; the kind of song Phil could’ve written sitting on the toilet.
How is it an injustice that they aren’t included in a phony baloney sham “institution” that’s nothing more than just another dishonest attempt to remove your money from your wallet? Fuck that. Lizzy and other great bands like Jethro Tull, Kansas, UFO, etc. don’t need them for anything. I wish people would stop giving them credibility they don’t deserve on any level.
Nice.Love Thin Lizzy and wish Phil was still with us.Visited his statue in Dublin.Saw them headline on the Live and Dangerous tour in Chicago (with AC/DC opening).Very good top 10 with Emerald #1.Whatever I thought was missing in your top 10,you had in your honorable mentions. Glad you spoke at length about Thunder & Lightning album which was a great album to go out on.When the Sun Goes Down gives me chills, because it seemed as though Phil knew he wouldn't be around much longer.
I'm so happy to see that so expected Thin Lizzy top 10 songs! Here's my top 10 : 1- Soldier of Fortune 2- I'm still in love with you (Live and Dangerous version) 3- Emerald 4- Wild One 5- Southbound 6- Fools Gold 7- Downtown Sundown 8- King's Vengeance 9- Massacre 10- The Sun Goes Down You're right Pete, this fantastic band is SO underrated :(
I know this is an old video, but I wanted to say "Sweetheart"! I bought Live and Dangerous in Germany when it came out. Black Rose was my 2nd, also in Germany. I'm a Lizzy fan!!! Lol I love you have the Barry Goudreau solo debut on the shelf off your right bicep. 🖒
1- a song for while I'm away 2- its only money 3- sweet Marie 4- nightlife (title track) 5- having a good time 6- sugar blues 7- Philomena 8- Dublin 9- Fats 10- Chinatown (title track) H.M - too many to mention They just have so many great songs. 👍👍 Its interesting what you say about Fighting. That is such an incredible album! But not one on my top ten. Just purchased Fighting on vinyl!
Still in Love With You....With Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson trading The Solo's All Time No 1..We played this at a Mate's Funeral...Boy Did that Church Shift on its foundations that day.
First band I ever saw live. I remember queueing to get tickets at the tender age of 15. Just brilliant. Thunder and Lightning except the first three albums is probably there most overlooked album.
It's hard to pick just 10 but if I did it be: (not in any particular order) 1. Freedom Song 2. Having a Good Time 3. Cowboy Song 4. Leave this Town 5. Soldier of Fortune 6. Do Anything You Want To 7. Fools Gold 8. Southbound 9. She Knows 10. The Pressure Will Blow
When I hear Massacre, Phil's lyrics play out like a movie in my mind. I see a forgotten output with a small band of heroes fighting against overwhelming odds in a battle that they can not win.
Thin Lizzy was so much more than a great hard rock band. The R&B influences of their earlier work is golden. I love the quasi-metal Sykes era but I mourned the more bluesy and R&B elements that were left behind. Severely underrated band.
My first live concert Thin Lizzy Coventry Theatre 1982 sold out show absolutely brilliant. The following year I attended Kiss Lick It Up tour. Stafford Binley Hall Showground . Support act Helix. The good old days 😎😍👌
It makes me happy watching your love for this excellent band ! Thank you for that. And I agree, this band is so good. Whatever Thin Lizzy album you pick out off the shelves, it is going to bring you love.
1. Waiting for an Alibi 2. Black Rose 3. Killer Without a Cause 3. Romeo and The Lonely Girl 4. Someday She's Gonna Hit Back 5. Massacre 6. Half Caste 7. Genocide Killing OF THE Buffalo 8. Got to Give It Up 9. No One Told Him 10. Downtown Sundown it's almost impossible but gravitate to these 10 the most. Honorable mentions Still In Love With You Live and Dangerous version, That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart, Fight Or Fall, Emerald, For Those Who Love To Live, Hollywood
Great list Pete and yes just about the most underrated band ever. The only other band that comes to mind is Cheap Trick who had success but weren’t massive. Glad to see the song Chinatown in your top 10. Regards Peter.
It's as though you picked my brain for this. One of the songs that you didn't feature that always got me is 'Mexican Blood'. That and the title track from "Renegade', where not necessarily anything most Thin Lizzy fans would put in their favorites, they always just resonated with me. Thanks for doing this list!
Emerald, Warriors, Don't Believe a Word, Suicide, Fighting My Way Back, The Rocker, Johnny, Bad Reputation, Cold Sweat and Ballad of a Hard Man. Honorable mentions - The Freedom Song, Still In Love With You, Rosalie, Cowboy Song, Massacre, Opium Trail, Soldier of Fortune, Black Rose, Got to Give it Up, Get Out of Here, Do Anything You Want, Waiting For an Alibi, Killer on the Loose, We Will Be Strong, Genocide, Hey You, etc....

(21-30)...Borderline, Opium Trail, Memory Pain, Jailbreak, Ballad Of The Hard Man, Genocide (The Killing Of The Buffalo), Cowboy Song, Renegade, Dancing In The Moonlight, Still In Love With You.
Wild one . Opium Trail , Johnny , Bad Rep, Little girl in bloom , Black Rose., Warriors , Holy War, Angel from the Coast , Southbound . And that was bloody hard !
You have to listen to Thin Lizzy's entire catalog! Now! Don't make the mistake I made of waiting until I was in my 50s. My biggest rock regret. Now they are one of my top 5 bands of all time!
The version of Emerald on Live and Dangerous is almost untouchable. I mean, all the musicians are just giving it top-notch playing and epic performances in that song and it's just beyond outstanding.
My Top Ten: (10:) Rosalie (9:) Don’t Believe A Word (8:) Angel From The Coast (7:) Soldier Of Fortune (6:) Jailbreak (5:) Cold Sweat (4:) Fools Gold (3:) Wild One (2:) Thunder And Lightning (1:) Freedom Song
Random top ten 1 johnny the fox meets jimmy the weed 2 Rocker 3 Cold sweat 4 Opuim trial 5 Bad repuation 6 Got to give it up 7 Jailbreak 8 Spirit slips away 9 Broken dreams 10 Cowboy song Such a great band.
Thanks for this. What a great band. My favourite along with Led Zeppelin. Lizzy are probably the hardest band on the planet to pick a top ten for and you were always going to get stick for it, so here goes! Waiting for an alabi is one of their most ripping tunes ever. It's tight, catchy radio friendly 3 minutes plus. Savage guitar work, (with Gary Moore) And it's got a great video. The outro is solid gold. A song with a beginning, middle and end. Top 3 all the way. Personally I think it's the perfect rock song. That's just my rant on one song. Warriors of Live and Dangerous is outrageous too. The drumming! Would be way up there. Most of that album actually. Anyway, love seeing anyone critique Thin Lizzy. Well done. Oh, by the way it's pronounced "Row sheen Dove" Dove as in the bird. Cheers.
My list 1.) Black Rose, 2.) Killer Without a Cause, 3.) Cowboy Song, 4.) Emerald, 5.) Thunder And Lightning, 6.) Dedication, 7.) The Rocker, 8.) Don't Believe a Word, 9.)Wild One, 10.) Boys....had to put it on since it was my intro to the band.
1-Rosalie; 2-Rockey; It's 3-It's Getting Dangerous; 4-Romeo and the Lonely Girl; 5-Wild One; 6-Borderline; 7-Cowboy Song; 8-Angel from the Coast; 9-Old Flame; 10-That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart. One day someone will make a film of Phil Lynott's life and then the Thin Lizzy catalog will get the attention it deserves.
Their live performances were a real tour de force! I saw them in the 70s, and they were BRILLIANT!!! They've got to be up there with the very best of them at the time! If they're not legendary, then nobody is!
The most underrated band ever 1. Cold Sweat - Thunder & Lighting 2. Shades of a Blue Orphanage 3. Emerald - jailbreak 4. Rosalie - fighting 5. Dancing in the moonlight 6. The boys are back in town 7. Genocide - chinatown 8. Dear Heart - Nightlife 9. The Holy war - Thunder & Lighting 10. Whiskey in a Jar
My thumbnail pic gives me away.. lol "Vagabond of the western world" is me favorite song ever....and I'm from TEXAS! I would bet good money that I've listened to THAT song more then anyone on this or any other planet
Yes, you are right, they were never huge, but they had an audience, fans who kept their loyalty for years. Thin Lizzy was a great band, really great. I had the pleasure to meet the band, back in ´83, on the Thunder and lightning tour. Me and some other guys went backstage and I particularly remember Phil Lynott and John Sykes. Picking the 10 greatest songs with Thin Lizzy. Ok, this is my list; 10. Warrior 9. Me and the Boys 8. Opium Trail 7. The Boys are back in town 6. Still in love with you 5. Angel of death 4. Great job as usual....I'd like to see some more mainstram rock Top 10's like you did with Chicago and Boston. Some suggestions Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Heart etc.
Emerald Live Bad Reputation Opium Trail Massacre Live Warriors Live Dont Believe a word Live Johnny Still in love with you live Cowboy song live Sweetheart
Pete Pardo crushes Eddie Trunk under his storm trooper boot heels. No ego and the music comes first, not self aggrandizement. Opium Trail, Boys are Back in Town, S and M, Black Rose.
Yes, Thin Lizzy is indeed the most underrated hard rock group to not make it big in America!
Indeed. But they arent alone... Rainbow, UFO, Nazareth just to name some too
rainbow did make it in america with JLT
@@zenica12 that's right. Street of dreams, Stone cold and others where airplayed on MTV
yes, but i think america did not fully embrace rainbow with JLT. i mean in that time they were big, but they had much more potential with that lineup
You can throw in UFO and Budgie.
Definitely the most underrated and unheard great rock band.
Thin Lizzy and UFO are the most under-appreciated bands in Rock history. They should be required listening for everyone regardless of your musical tastes!
Absolutely..
Also Y&T
Totally right Thin Lizzy is in my top 5 greatest bands and Phil Lynott one of the best front men in a band i have all there albums and there all great...

Wild one . Opium Trail , Johnny , Bad Rep, Little girl in bloom , Black Rose., Warriors , Holy War, Angel from the Coast , Southbound . And that was bloody hard !
Cold sweat for me. Love that song
You have to listen to Thin Lizzy's entire catalog! Now! Don't make the mistake I made of waiting until I was in my 50s. My biggest rock regret. Now they are one of my top 5 bands of all time!
good job here and agonizing back and fouth I think you have done a solid job here.
The version of Emerald on Live and Dangerous is almost untouchable. I mean, all the musicians are just giving it top-notch playing and epic performances in that song and it's just beyond outstanding.

Angel from the coast has been my go to morning song for years
Thanks for this. Cheers.

My favorite Thin Lizzy song has always been Roisin Dubh, it makes me feel proud to be Irish
Love Showdown from Nightlife
Nice list Pete! I can't argue with your top 5!
Never saw them live and could have made that happen when they opened for Queen at MSG around 76-77. Big Miss!
