  • Here is an honest evaluation of a new Rogue F-style Mandolin that came into the shop for a setup. I am NOT affiliated any anyway and have nothing to gain or loose if you decide to purchase one of these mandolins.

Been wasp stung too.. oh its horrible. That Rogue looks like a great starting point for a good mandolin to learn and play, and not be ashamed of. Your setup does it justice👍

My mother's family is from the Winona area, my grandmother had an old wives tale remedy for wasp stings and bee stings. She would take some tobacco and wet it and put it directly on the sting making a poultice and leaving it there for an hour at least. I know this sounds silly but trust me it works. Try it and see, one cigarette will last a long time and take care of more than one sting. Remember what Huck Finn said, "Jim said bees won't sting an idiot but I don't believe that, I have tried them lots of times myself and they won't sting me", so all the stings might mean you're smart.

Sounds great! I am 100% with you regarding the nut-it’s only function is to clamp the strings in the correct position. From a physics perspective, all the sound-producing motion happens at the bridge, where the force is coupled to the top between the f-holes, which acts as a “speaker” to radiate sound into the air. Attention to the bridge, its fit to the top, and the bracing gives a good return on investment of time.

Glad to see they are now making F-styles. They just made A-styles for a long time.

Sorry about your hand. Good to see it’s okay now. Every work you do, you make it look so easy and simple; I know it’s not. LOVE THE T-SHIRT!

I have the same model. First one had a neck separation within 6 months. Second one was un-tunable - the distance from fret 1 to nut was off, by a LOT. $50 for luthier to cut fretboard and re-set the nut to fix. If you can do ALL the setup work yourself, still a good buy. If not, good-bye.

My wife and I dont smoke but we keep a cigarette in the junk drawer so if we get stung we can wet some tobacco down with spit and put it on the sting it will make it feel a lot better right after it happens. Leave on on as long as you can stand or bandage some tobacco on the wound. It works.

Great video Jerry, I just ordered one of these. I tried one about a year ago and, I had to send it back just about everything was out of wack plus the workmanship and finish was very bad. Hoping for a good one this time.
I purchased an A style a couple of years ago and, it was darn near perfect out of the box. Just lowered the action and a new set of strings and, it is a nice mando. There are a lot of mandolins on the market that are made in China and some are way overpriced but, this one isn't. I'm not a fan of overpaying for anything if there really isn't that much difference. I've learned throughout the years that the musician makes the difference. High quality instruments are nice to have and play but, not at a ridiculous premium price. If overall everything is as it should be a little setup work can make a tremendous difference.

great job. I would suggest to first knock down any sharp frets so ya dont cut your hand up. I played a show with a 3 hour old cheap guitar and my hand was literally shreaded, so i got a Tetnis booster shot the next day. Are those Red Wasps the ones that look like red velvet? Theyre beautiful but maybe not so fun to get bit by one

keep a can of snuff handy for stings. Make a paste from it and it will stop pain and swelling at once. My grandpa showed me 55 yrs ago

You mentioned that the wasp sting probably wouldn't hurt any more if you had cut that finger off. I did cut a finger off (two, actually), and it just a small sting. I've had splinters that hurt worse. They were put back on but continued to ache for several years.

I'm not a luthier by any means, just a modder and repair guy.
My forte is taking an inexpensive and humble instrument, and making it sound, look, and play like a much more expensive guitar. Electric guitar making is not rocket science.
I don't work on many acoustic instruments, because I find them a bit finicky and temperamental.
One little goof, and the thing goes south, and tone is lost. It's kind of scary.
So I love to watch an experienced expert do work on acoustic instruments. It's educational.
I hope you can keep your videos coming, as they are like a course in acoustic repair. I love them.

Bought a Rogue bass for $85 back around 2005. I did basic set up, set the action, set the intonation, & for $85 it sounds really good. Granted it's not a Fender, Alembic, etc., but for $85 it's not too bad. I did buy an old Korg/Tone Works AXB3 modeller pedal for $60 (Who knew a bass could sound 40 different ways? That's just with the presets.) So I'm happy with the old thing. (The guy who used to be my bass player was going to give me his old P pick ups, off of his RARE Fender Elite Precision Bass, [fender only made them for 2 years 82 & 83] after he modified it [didn't know what he had until after he modded it], however he "neglected" to give them to me before he moved to the Philippines.) Any way Rogues aren't bad for the price. I did have to buy new tuning keys after one broke a couple yrs ago. Cost me $25 for a new set. They are the "house brand" for Musicians Friend/Guitar Center, as I found out some years ago.

I don't know if you like wearing masks when you sand but I don't so I recently bought a crash helmet on eBay that does all the things that you would expect from a face mask, it protects the eyes and keeps out the dust together with protecting the ears from excessive noise just thought I would offer this as a suggestion for anyone that has the same dislike of face masks as I do.

That hand looks bad*** I noticed the inlay on the head stock**that is a pattern I used for years. the hard part of using that design is the scaling it took me hours of printing to get the pattern to fit around the keys the right way. Chuck

Wonderful video, Jerry! Thank-you for soldiering on, despite your.obvious, discomfort. I was just wondering if you would consider that "Rogue" Mandolin a viable entry level instrument. I play Guitar, Ukulele, and banjo, reasonably well, I think, but since I've been listening to accomplished players, such as yourself, I am longing to learn your instrument of choice.

It just generally takes me an hour or so on a new instrument. But if it needs front leveling and all that it can take a couple hours. I charged 80 bucks an hour.
