  • I start off with some comments received from customers. I move on to a bit of channel news before jumping into a setup of a real nice A style mandolin by Eastman.

    I've had the pleasure of playing a few Eastman guitars and was surprised by the quality compared to the price. I'm glad to hear the mandolins are made with the same surprising quality as their guitars. Excellent video as always!

    I bought the Eastman 305 on Ebay just to have an A style instrument. It was noticeably louder than my other mandolin(s) and had a fantastic tone. I'll never sell it. Great job in getting this one up!

    Another interesting and informative video Jerry. I've recently acquired an Eastman MD315 as my beginner mandolin, based in part on your opinion that they are reasonably decent instruments. You've also had a role in my decision to learn the mandolin after a lifetime of guitar playing (just about 70yrs young)! I really enjoy your approach to both music and your build, repair and restoration skills.
    So a big shout out from the beautiful Fraser Valley, British Columbia and please keep the great videos coming.

      Thank you very kindly. Believe it or not a week ago on Friday evening I played music with a girl from British Columbia. She was visiting her grandfather in our area. And she came to the jam. She was an incredible Talent. Beautiful singing voice and played pretty well too. Her name was Zoe. I didn't get her last name but her grandfather's last name is Bookout. Thank you for watching my friend.

    Hi Jerry, I am not surprised that you like the Eastman mandolin. I own two Eastman guitars. I just recently changed to heavier strings and couldn't figure out why I had string buzz . Because of your excellent videos on the subject I was able to change the bridge and adjust the truss rod to perfection. Thank you for sharing your 30 years plus experience with all of us. You are very mutch appreciated, Thanks David Kaiser

    First: Great video. Second: Good luck with the sales of your current and future Mandolin methods. I'm thinking of getting a Mandolin either later this, or early next year, so you'll get an order off me sometime in the near future. The Eastman A Model looks like great value so thanks for showing it here. Third: If the rest of the people in the world kept as busy as you doing something positive, most of societies problems would disappear overnight. :-) You've also wisely decided to just keep doing things your own way. Let the naysayers go somewhere else to feel important, or better still let them start their own channel and show everyone how perfect they do things themselves :-0

    Awesome video. Randy is right. The more popular you get. The more negative comments you will get. I've noticed it on many channels. Don't worry you still have all the positive people. And you will get more & more. Cause you always release great videos. I always look forward to your videos. I always hit the thumbs up before your video starts. I always know it will be a great video. Keep them coming. And your channel will keep growing. Many good people will find you. God bless you my friend.

    I have this Eastman md 305 mandolin, among the four I own! After watching this video, I decided to put paste wax (Turtle Wax) on the body, since Jerry recommended this. He was right, the tone of the mandolin, which was already very good, got even better I don't understand why, but am glad to learn these tips from these videos.

      On some instruments it really makes a difference. I especially notice the difference on flat top guitars.

    Right hand technique is definitely something I need to work on. All good players seem to have a really good fluid right hand technique mine is too stiff and lacks confidence. Good job

      The right hand is like the foundation and walls of your house it is everything. The left hand is like the pictures on the wall. I like to call it decoration.

    I had the exact same issue with the same tuning peg on my 305. There was a burr or rough edge. Strange coincidence.

  • @jamiej14544
    @jamiej14544 6 лет назад +3

    I have the Eastman MD305 and this is a very good video on this instrument, which is a great value. There are videos on youtube of the workers in the Chinese factory leveling the frets before finishing. So, I am not surprised that it wouldn't need much "fine tuning" . The one I bought was very loud and had excellent tone, due, I think, to the satin finish, which helps the wood breathe easily. The setup was excellent, as is. It's always fun to see a video of yours on an instrument I own! This is the second one for me, so far. Thanks!

      Thank you very much. My only problem is I can't tell when the mic is being over driven. Because it's just a cheap little camera. The other side of the coin is sometimes it barely barely picks up at all and then I have to really turn it up in post-production. So you just can't win. Thanks very much for watching.

    MD305: Best bang for the buck beginner mandolin, hands down. Good job on that setup, Jerry. Rather surprising bad bridge fitting from Eastman, and those divots are permanent.

    Hi Jerry, Great video, so what new bridge did you put on this mando, I`m planning on buying this same model, How much better does the new bridge alone contribute to the sound, etc. Thanks much !! Philip.

    When you break an edge, it's called a chamfer if you break the edge with a flat surface, and a radius if you break the edge with a round surface.

  • @watahyahknow
    @watahyahknow 6 лет назад +1

    i would suggest to put thin scotchtape over the mic hole to dampen the input signal a little , but it could be that the camera software would just boost the signal to the set level and cause it to sound even worse , its a cheap fix if it works though so it could be worth a try

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  6 лет назад

      The problem is I never know when it's over driving or when it's under driving. Sometimes it picks up very sensitively. Other times it barely picks up at all and I have to turn it up a ton in post. Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks for watching.

  • @toddmarshall2401

    Does the wax soak into the wood with that finish? Or does it just stay on top?

  • @HBSuccess

    Hey Jerry - any chance that your camera has some kind of limiter or compression you could turn on the audio? That will often take care of a loud source driving it into clipping - without having to fool with any external gear. They might call it some proprietary name but basically it’ll be a limiter/compressor.

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  6 лет назад

      It has some setting that I had to turn off because it would sometimes pick up real loud and sometimes barely pick up at all. Since turning that off it's been more consistent but it's still overdrive's. Thanks for taking a look.

    Dang Jerry! $50.00 the hour sounds reasonable. My SIL Mark has his Physical Trainng bizness and chrges $60.00 per hour
    3 of his clients are retired oil company CEO's. He and my son Dan stage tailgate parties for them at Jerry Jones World
    Stadium. They BBQ on Sat nite and serve them at Sun games. The CEO's admit them to Cowboys Sky Boxes to watch the
    Pokes lose. BTW. The CEO's eat no side dishes. Jus Briskets and sauce. CEO's is crazy!!!

    Hi Jerry watched all your videos, this is not negative I repair guitars in the UK , when I do fret work I use a fret protector when polishing, as then usually I don't have to take any material off the fretboard with a razor (unless it's finger nail worn)
    I just think if ever service I did on a guitar I used the razor even if it's minimal removal eventually there would be no or below spec fretboard left
    I think your work is brilliant and only trying to add, I also use NEVR-DULL on the frets at the end of a polish it brings them up like glass

      Look, guys. Well-intended negative comments can be helpful. This isn't a discussion forum, but the Comment section offers a great place to get the full picture of an operation. HOWEVER, all of these sites attract butt-heads who just want to stir up bad feelings. IGNORE them. Don't respond to them. Most will move on to other sites where they can get attention. So far your site and Jerry's are the only ones I subscribe to via Patreon. Viewing yours and Jerry's provides me with links to other good sites which I'll eventually subscribe to. I know just enough about this stuff to sometimes think, 'I'd do this another way.' Most of your Commenters know how to mention other ways without insulting. And, if they're like me, they just ignore the butt-heads. So, now I realize I've ranted on long enough. Keep showing these fine repair techniques. They're great for learning stuff, and are an excellent pastime for snack-time viewing.
