- Lolita, a popular killer whale at the Miami Seaquarium, died suddenly from a condition relating to renal failure. Prior to her death, plans were underway to move the beloved orca back to her natural habitat. WTVJ's Ryan Nelson reports.

How could you not get an animal back to its family in the wild in 53 years? The people who forced her to live in isolation and die alone in a tiny tank should be held responsible. Humans and their greed for money are harming precious animals who live miserable lonely lives so we can see them perform. How awful.
She wasn’t ever going back to her family it doesn’t work like that after being gone for so long she was going to a free Range rehabilitation area she was taken at four no other killer whales would want her around them that’s what happened to free Willy. Also they don’t know how to hunt so they can’t survive completely on their own so they still feed them but with live fish instead so they can practice. However you know the story of free Willy he didn’t last long outside of the aquarium.
All animals in zoo and aquariums should be back in the ocean where they belong to. We can help them to heal for certain conditions then immediately release them back to the ocean ! Teaching them forcefully to jump or move for human entertainment then give them food are literally slavery. So sad.
Oh no, that's so sad. I thought she was going to be released to the same area she was taken from and they were going to work with her to learn to hunt for food instead of perform for food, but it sounds like she would have just been alone again even after being moved, so there wasn't ever going to be a happy ending:(

@@artisan1880 from my understanding there are organizations that are trying to do in the wild Rehabilitation areas in which they do teach them how to hunt and try to reintroduce them into pods or their own pod that they came from I feel it that is a better option than just leaving them in these concrete tanks alone when that's not biologically how they're going to thrive I think they have to stop breeding these animals in captivity and they have to work on reintroducing the ones that are in capitivity into the wild in some way shape or form they have the money to do it they just don't want to do it. The only thing people can do is to stop going to these aquariums where these animals are forced to perform for Frozen dead food and their fins stop working because they sit still and Float their whole life, I think the thing that sticks with me the most is in that documentary about orcas in captivity I forgot what it's called black fish or something when it shows the orcas crying every night doing the noises they do to locate their family in the wild, you can't unsee that

Heartbroken by the news, so close to her long overdue release. Lolita deserved a much, much better life. This disgusting business needs to shut down NOW. Stop exploiting sentient beings for money!
And to think that Lolita's mother is still alive and enjoying the freedom these intelligent creatures deserve. A blatant example of animal abuse: she was kept in a small tank for 50 years for the sake of profits for the Miami Seaquarium. How can the owners enjoy that money? Having lived for 40 years close to the Seaquarium, as a matter of principle, I never took my family there.

Lolita’s death you might say is an isolated case. Lolita’s life experience is not.
Her capture, imprisonment, and forced labor to entertain people and enrich her captors is anything but isolated.
I believe there is good reason why these animals are beginning to attack and sink boats.

We all know this is heartbreaking. We all know this should NEVER have happened. We all know that visiting Seaworld or any place that has animal shows is animal cruelty. But there are still so many out there who just DON'T KNOW. But we can advocate, we can be the voices of those animals suffering, and we can do this by promoting awareness to those around us. I have family members who gamble on horses and greyhounds, friends who dress up for Melbourne Cup, and friends who visit Seaworld, and even though it disgusts me... all I can do is explain and educate them as to why their actions promote animal suffering and cruelty. It's the least we can do.... RIP Lolita. We will never forget you.

I’m sure I saw Lolita years ago in my twenties while visiting that Seaquarium! I’m now 75 years old & in good health! Had Lolita never been removed from her native habitat, she may have lived 2:50 tomyage inpeace! Human beings are the most dangerous game

Even after all they did, after their best efforts, the captive Lolita died. They just deprived a precious wild mammal of its natural habitat. Miami Seaquarium were the cause of its stressful life and death. Nothing they say can be taken for an excuse. Hightime they reflect on their best practices which are for the worst and shut down their moneymaking facility.
We the people can make that happen if we don't go to Miami Seaquarium or any Seaquarium. From now on. It's hightime we, the citizens of the world, take a stand and unite against this unacceptable inhumanity.

They kept her In a 80 by 35 foot tank till she died. Pure cruelty greed and neglect. I will never visit these sea world jails for large intelgent whales and sharks.
They were going to set her free because they didn’t want to pay for her treatment. Stop going to the shows! If you want to see wildlife go to aquariums that are rehabilitating. Your money goes towards helping animals. They aren’t as cool, they aren’t as fun, but it’s not about us..this type of “entertainment”, capturing ..holding them …making them perform..it’s got to be put to an end!

Dear sweet Tokitae, i am so sorry for what we humans did to you. You should have never been captured and held hostage in the first place. Once an orca is captured their survival is not guaranteed upon release. The damage is already done. You almost had your chance though, some humans were fighting for your freedom. I hope you somehow know this. I'd say more but I am crying 😔

Educating people about nature by bringing the animals to them was an interesting idea, but i think it's run it's course. Use holographic technology or something.

She wouldn’t have been truly wild. They were going to keep her in a large pen in the ocean where she could communicate with her wild relatives. It was the closest thing to freedom they could give her.

She died from being in captivity. She didn't die of old age. Granny J2 lived to 102. They don't live as long in captivity.

Any whale, Killer whales, Belugas, they should not be taken for captured exhibits, its just a life sentence for an emotional sentient being. Zoos are depressive existences for many animals.
Sad…. I was a grad student at the UM marine lab in 1971. Initially upon arrival, Lolita was placed in an older, existing exhibit (tank) that, I recall was no more than about 75 ft in diameter and maybe ten to fifteen feet deep. There was a below-grade observation passageway that ran around the entire tank so visitors could observe her through a series of underwater windows. One day my wife and I took our three-year old daughter to see Lolita… orcas were a very rare animal on exhibit in those days. Sheila was in a stroller. As we approached the first window, Lolita came right up to the glass at our daughter’s level and appeared to be staring at her. As we continued around the tank, Lolita followed us window to window, remaining at eye level with Sheila. At first we thought that Lolita was fascinated by our daughter’s bright red hair. But on thinking about it later, I realized that, as Lolita was only recently taken from the wild, Sheila was one of the first toddler-sized humans that the orca had ever seen. It was a bit unnerving for my wife and I, but our daughter was delighted. A happy memory almost forgotten in all these years…. RIP old girl….

Oh no! I was really hoping to hear some good news about Lolita. I wanted her to be freed. She shouldn't have ever been there. I'm 59 years old and Lolita was locked up there for most of my lifetime. I was a kid when she came there, now look at me! That's really my picture! In fact that one was taken five years ago.
The more I think about it, I think they knew she was dying and came up with the idea of saying they were going to free her. They knew when she died in that tank she was dying and all this release crap was a lie. A lie to try to cover their age old lie of keeping her in captivity. I'm sick of humans and their sick ways of lording over everything that should be free. I'm just disgusted with this species called humans. Monsters! I'm so sorry Toki.
