I loved loved loved the way she delivered this poem! Not shouting like the rest of them. Not gesturing madly. Not stomping, not pulling her hair. But so powerful nonetheless!

The best kind of poetry, to me. It confronts you, but it’s true in a way you can’t deny. It speaks of the way things are, but draws you back to how they were. It’s present but it also transports you. I really hope I find more from her; I’m not ready to not be captivated by her perspective yet, and I want to find out more.

    "Her scars are too loud"
"Every breath and bullet will tell her differently"
Beauty has never come without a cost higher than most are willing to pay. The pain in these words are playing god without consent.
I don't know how she did this so beautifully. The cost was comfort for her but she paid her dues.
And she did it damn well

He asked her, “what are you?” and she decided to tell him the origin story of America from the victims’ (of this blood drenched land) point of view [the last thing any white American wants to hear]. She starts with women, then Native Americans, then descendants of American chattel slavery. Then she reads this white man, for his “whiteness” and his question being asked in the first place. Lastly, she tells the origin story of ALL MIXED KIDS and ends the poem by talking about herself.
As a fellow mixed kid, who doesn’t know the author I’d bet money I’m right! No where is this poem did she talk about what is actually biologically mixed with, cuz that’s not the point of the poem. She just wanted to honor the history of the land she stand on, to an audience of people hoping to find out what she’s mixed with by listening to this poem.
