This was one of my favorite books of the year for so many reasons, it had some issues for sure but just something about Misaki spoke to my soul.

The exploration of motherhood and NOT really wanting to be a mom, longing for that "life before" I FEEL that so much. Growing into motherhood and love and learning to embrace your present and future without forgetting your past.

I read it last year and it was best of 2019. I loved it with all my heart, it was so emotional, IMO it was better than Poppy War. Highly recommended.

I think the last chapter was to tie it into the series she had written already, but I defiently get that it felt a bit jarring.

I really loved this book, even all the critiques and specific moments you and other reviewers mentioned I remember really liking. Which like reading is subjective like you said, so I don’t think anyone is right or wrong but I think the last chapter worked for me cause it made me laugh a lot which I think was a good cathartic emotional way for me to end it. I also knew from chapter one I would love it but I am weird about world building. I love info dumps and exposition and I also love being thrown in with no knowledge and just have to figure it out. But I think the beginning reminded me of mistborn’s world building style, which was one of my first adult fantasies so I actually felt really at home in the writing and then like you said, act 2 happens and I just really loved the emotional impact it jad

For me, the ending *spoilers below*
So for me the last chapter was a lot about Misaki building trust with Takeru. They had said in the previous chapters things like 'oh, we'll try to do better on or marriage and communicate better' but actions speak louder than words in relationships. A lot of times people say something but they don't follow through with actions. I think Takeru inviting Robin shows to Misaki that he is serious and will try to make the marriage work. Of course there were a lot of other things in the last chapter between Robin and Misaki, but it was that final chapter which made me convinced Misaki and Takeru would work.

I finished it in November as well and I loved it even the beginning because to me I thought that if the beginning wasn’t written the way it was, it would have left the readers confused on some of the things Mikasa knew in a village where women are suppressed. I do agree that that last chapter didn’t necessarily needed to be added there. But I didn’t mind it all. I loved it and the emotions it makes you feel, I couldn’t pick up another book for a couple weeks. Lol.

I loved this book! I don't remember having any issues with the pacing or the ending, to me the ending felt both like a resolution and a beginning for more books if the author intends to build out the world (which I apparently don't mind). IMO the structure (most of the action in the middle), the mother/son main characters and the exploration of slightly more 'domestic' themes, made it quite unique for a fantasy

I completely understand how someone would have some serious issues with this book, just to give my own two cents, as an Indian I have often found characters from my country represented in the most cringe fashion there is.
So mild spoilers, that final chapter giving closure to a character of Indian descent was incredibly touching and poignant for me, I understand the setup for future books was a bit out of place but the ending showing Misaki having found some semblance of peace and making peace with her past was incredibly touching and emotionally moving. Also getting to read my own language in that final chapter was so fulfilling I know others won't care and I am biased but hell I am gonna celebrate when an Indian character is represented that way. I don't think the ending ruins any of the emotional impact of this book imo, if anything it enhances it. But I will not deny that the beginning is definitely quite cliche especially on Mamoru's side of things, but the payoffs were so emotional that I can't help but forgive it

  • @ade625

I completely agree with your review, especially the fact that the general structure of the book works fine as it is. The emotional climax worked so well. It's got such glaring flaws, but it manages to overcome them by being one of the most emotionally impactful fantasy books I've read. That duel....
It was written as a spin-off prequel to her discontinued series, which explains a few things.

What a great review! also I largely agree with it :)
Personally, I loved the structure of the book, and having an aftermath after the big battle was a big positive for me. If anything the last part had my favourite scenes. One scene in particular. It is very quiet with hardly any movement, but the emotions it packs are phenomenal (I am getting emotional just by typing this). I also loved the themes discussed, and even enjoyed the battle scenes.
But, the book has issues. I think the pacing is tiny bit off from start to end. Luckily only at the end it annoyed me though. I totally agree about that last chapter. It wasn't needed at all, or at least needed to be massively cut. But, it was in essence a pitch for the already completed series. I also wasn't that convinced about the arc of one character.
But, on the whole, the positives far outweighed the negatives, and I throughly enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed it and appreciated the realistic take on the effects of war. I agree with your issue about the last chapter, especially because a new character and mystery is introduced which would only make some sense if there was going to be a sequel. My only other issue was that in the last section I didn’t love how suddenly Misaki seemed to be so completely forgiving of Takeru when in reality I think restoration in that relationship would have taken a lot more work and time on both of their parts.

She realised she was just as much at fault as him, or at least she thinks so.
Plus Takeru opening up about why he seemed so distant made a connection with them too. She realised he wasn't being cruel. Since now she knows his reason for all those things that happened it became easier to work with what they have.

  • @angelagualtieri5699

I really loved the character work, the fight scenes, and the emotional aspects of this book. I had some similar issues to yours, especially with respect to the pacing and the ending. With the pacing, for me it wasn't so much I wanted the action at the end. I just felt like after chapter 8, there was too much variety in the chapter lengths so at different points things seemed almost too short and too long at the same time. I also really loved the final duel scene, but I felt like the book could have ended in the second to last chapter. There was also a small plot line in Misaki's arc that I really did not like (this features in the ending). Overall, I enjoyed my experience reading and would still recommend the book, but like you said, with caveats. I'm looking forward to the live show discussion to get into more detail.

I just bought this a couple weeks ago, been excited to read it for a while. But I was sort've hesitant when I heard there was modern tech and stuff in the book, because for some reason I prefer my fantasy the traditional ancient/medival times way. But I've heard SUCH good things about it I had to buy it. Hoping to start on it soon.

Hey I’m only three years late to this party. I totally understand the mixed feelings about this book. I had them as well, as this is certainly not your standard fantasy story. It bills itself as a “war story” but I don’t think that’s 100 percent accurate. There certainly is plenty of war - the whole middle section in particular - but it serves as the catalyst to the emotional climaxes that come after. This is a fantasy novel about marriage and family. Full stop. This book has so much more to say about marriage, communication, emotional confrontation, and forgiveness than it even tries to say about war. It still says plenty about war, but it’s a story about a marriage at its heart. ♥️

I acquired this book at the same time as Rage of Dragons. I had heard that Rage of Dragons was the better book, so I read this one first. Would you believe that I preferred Sword of Kaigen to Rage of Dragons? I love strong women protagonists. While I'm old, and my memory is shot, this story has stuck with me. I don't recall nearly as much of Rage of Dragons. *shrugs*

I read it and loved it so much. I loved all the characters. My only problem was with the ending.
    **SPOILERS**
I understand that the last chapter was important to give closure to Misaki but i would have been okay if it ended with Hyori's child being born. I loved that this book showed the after effects of war and where everyone ended. But apart from that I love this book from the depth of my heart.

That last chapter went the way it did because this book is a prequel to a series that the author was writing at that time (It's related to Robin. She is not continuing it though.) That's why the chapter felt so much like a setup, because she had to justify the prequel somehow. I didn't mind that at all, because imo our main characters needed the ending to be the way it was, for some closure, though of course this is a subjective opinion.

    • @ebnovels
      @ebnovels  3 года назад

I know why it’s there, but I don’t think we need to set up another series at the end of this one. I liked the idea of Robin showing up at the end, and I agree about the closure, but everything else took away from the closure for me. It almost felt like, “Well now that everything is done here, let’s move on,” which didn’t allow for the weight that I thought this book delivered on before that.
