    Yes get to see the sawmill again. I’ll be bringing some red oak later in October 😜😎

    This was awesome me personally never seeing a kiln operate see all the water going into that bucket was crazy never would have imagined it fill up that fast. Looking forward to the sawmill videos and hope to see some Woodworking videos this winter I really enjoy those. Very happy for you bud glad you finally drying wood keep up the good work

    When you put the 1st layer of wood directly on the treated 4x4's pay attention when this load is removed if there is a chemical stain on the bottom of the boards. If there is you might need to put a 1x of oak or something down to separate.
    This is a great project you have. Your making me think bad things like, I need one of these. Great Work!

      +Farmer Bob thanks. Actually Bob the 4x4 are not treated. Hard to tell from the video footage. Thanks Bob for watching! I appreciate your time

    Years ago I designed a diesel engine powered generator skid that was enclosed. To keep it from getting to hot inside we had powered louvers. They were connected to temperature monitoring circuits that would open and close the louvers as needed. It was enclosed because it was to be used in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska which is really cold in the winter. Anyway, that might be something you could add in the future when time and money allows.

    Congratulations on the kiln.
    The key to drying quality hardwoods is to go slow.
    What happens when the wood is heated in an air tight chamber is that the moisture comes off the surface of the wood fast and fills the air.
    Then the Core moisture migrates up slowly to the surface.
    If you remove the moisture in the air too fast, you will cause the surface of the wood to dry out too fast and it can do what we call case harden.
    If that happens, you will trap the core moisture inside.
    So IF you have a separate power switch for your compressor, you can turn it off, close all the vents and for a 12 -24 hour period and just have heat in the chamber with no water coming out.
    That will condition the wood. It is what we always do the last 12-24 hours of a kiln load.
    It levels the core moisture to the surface.
    Have fun learning on some low cost woods too at first. Saw up something like Pine, Poplar or anything easy to dry and stack it in there right off the mill.
    Bring up the temp without taking water off overnight and then slowly dry it.

      There is a certain speed at which you take moisture out off wood. Like Dusty was saying. It varies from which kind off wood it is, I think some of these books could help you out. "Drying Eastern Hardwood Lumber (Agriculture Handbook No. 528)" and "Selecting and Drying Wood: The New Best of Fine Woodworking". both are on amazon for under 50$ for them both.

      at what rate? is solar kiln drying enough for high quality hardwood??

    • @DustySplinters
      @DustySplinters 2 года назад +1

      @@lifeisneverthesame910 For the best quality KD hardwood the goal it to reach a moisture level slightly below your local average EMC (Equilibrium Moisture Content).
      If you drop to 6%-8" and ship to a moist location, the wood will pick up moisture over time so it was a waste of time and energy to over dry the wood.
      The key is never to draw off more moisture from wood to reduce the surface moisture content 2% lower than core.
      This prevents Case Hardening where the outside becomes so dry you cannot pull out moisture from the core.
      At the end of any run, you want to close the kiln air tight while gently increasing heat to equalize the wood since you are no longer taking moisture out.
      It is a simple process but there are lots of intricacies.

    Two days and down 2 percent on moisture content, not bad at all...at this rate Monday she should be under 10 percent. Mite have to make those vent doors a little bit bigger. Have a great weekend and as always looking forward to some milling videos...

    Ever thought about hard piping the water drain into a drain line into the ground.. kinda like a downspout into the yard..? Wouldn't have to empty the bucket as much as would be pretty ,inch maintenance free.

    • @OutoftheWoods0623
      @OutoftheWoods0623  7 лет назад

      +Kevin Cameron not a bad thought but they say you need to monitor and log the water output levels for each load. 👍

      Out of the Woods -ok...makes total sense...yours is the first wood kiln I’ve seen, so I’m a total noob at the science for quality wood. Thanks for the reply and info.

    I'm confused why the kiln heater doesn't shut itself off when the temperature gets close to 130° -- you know, like a plain old ordinary thermostat.
    Great series of videos, by the way.

    • @OutoftheWoods0623
      @OutoftheWoods0623  6 лет назад

      It does shut off but the kiln still gets hotter. The fan motors give off heat

    check out arduino, get your vents to open part way at a certain temp, open full at another, close part way at another, close completely at another. that way you could have as many vents as you want and they would all work synchronously. you could tighten up the operating temp range and keep it right close to where you want it. did you put cold air vents near the top of the kiln at the back to let cold air in?
    edit: I guess it depends on the design of the kiln, but isn't there usually hot air exhaust and cold air intake vents on any kiln?

    Don't you want to have your exhaust vent mounted as high as possible? Think you can remove heat faster and more efficient that way... Thx for sharing... ☺

    • @OutoftheWoods0623
      @OutoftheWoods0623  7 лет назад +1

      +R. E. Hill not sure. I went by what the engineer suggested that designed the building.
      Thanks for watching!

      Out of the Woods since hot air rises and will accumulate at the highest point, engineer or not, pretty sure that vents placed there, will be efficient. This would be backup vents for when the compressor is in "danger" of shutting down. Anways, thx for the videos, very much appreciated. ☺

      The exhaust vent on the other side of the Kiln is up high. The lower one is intake vent
