At least you didnt pretend that Smash is NOT a fighting game. Its the most competitive fighting game there is. Probably most competitive video game that is still popular.
Another crossover series i really like that i gotta mention whenever the topic comes up is the SRW series. Not as well known as these due to series only starting to get localization work in 2016, the series is like Kingdom hearts in that it brings together the worlds of various animated properties but ultimately focuses on it's core cast of original characters. It plays like Fire emblem but instead of knights and wizards the party members are giant robots, tiny robot, people in power armor or vehicles with sci-fi weaponry. These english releases weren't released worldwide only in some regions of the world but sold well enough on the import market that Bandai Namco made the desicion to release the newest game in the series SRW 30 worldwide on steam, so anyone can now try the series out.
The localization process being a mess of rights holders because different companies have rights in the Western markets is largely why it never got released, well that and that until they started focusing [too much, some would say] on newer robot series that most of the libraries would have a ton of completely unknown series in the West. While the licensing issues got cleaned up a little more, it is most likely actually a side effect of the monopolization of the anime industry in the West where only like three or four companies hold the licensing rights to MOST anime. Alpha 3 for instance had EVERY greenlight except that Harmony Gold was against allowing a Macross property to be licensed for release and that alone kept it from being released. OG1 and OG2 both got Western releases in large part because they didn't have these issues, but they didn't do that well (I think it was just the market, turn based tactics games weren't really popular at the time and mecha anime has never actually been overwhelmingly popular in the West). More recent SRW releases are probably also because the SEA releases have been getting English translations anyway and so it's not that difficult to throw that onto Steam/PSN/Xbox Live and thus the only real expenditures would be the licensing fees.
@@Zetact_ I find that to be the silver lining in the anime industry being a monopoly nowadays in the west. It allows easier access to games that used to be completely locked to us.
@@Klonoahedgehog Well it probably isn't all just the legal stuff but also that a lot of licensed games using anime properties, even some relatively modern ones, have way less of a draw in the West because it's possible to have no clue what the series are. In the current age of the internet though it's way easier to view or find the historical significance of a lot of the anime series that someone who might have picked up a game off the shelf wouldn't have had. There are a lot of series that were highly popular, influential, or simply high-quality that were pretty much unknown in the West but nowadays there are mecha series being released where even if they don't really get any traction the ease of information exchange makes it easier for someone to recognize it. Like there are more average anime fans who would know about the "it's okay" Buddy Complex than there are who know about the amazing Vifam.
The thing about KH1 alot of people don't realize is it was made in secret from the west. Only the Japanes side of the company knew about it and they were afraid it was gonna get canceled when square already started to work on it, but they got lucky since Disney CEO was visiting Japan at the time and they sneak in KH and got his approval.
Super smash Bros I consider to be the best fighting franchise there is. Yes it's fair to call it a different genre of fighting game as in platform fighter but it's just so amazing. Honestly it makes more sense that you win by doing a strong attack when the damage is high enough. In standard fighting games you can knock somebody out with the weakest of jabs as long as their health is low enough which actually is not realistic. You don't ever see that happen in a boxing match or MMA. Nobody gets knocked out by just a little jab they always have to go for the knockout punch.

The idea of Disney and Final Fantasy crossing over is like fries in a milkshake-sounds like it shouldn’t be anywhere near as good as it actually is. I think what makes it work is that kids get to feel cool and mature while their favorite Disney characters fight heccin’ Sephiroth-like villains, while teens get a new lens to view classic Disney works as they’re used to propel a greater narrative.
An obscure crossover I'd like to talk about is Lord of Vermillion. It's an arcade card game made by Square Enix which has characters from many of their franchises such as Final Fantasy, Nier and Romancing SaGa, as well as characters from third party companies such as BlazBlue and Tekken. Hell it even has Touhou characters on it, that's how I got to know about it in the first place since Touhou isn't a franchise known for frequently crossing over with others.
Nomura actually DID design Setzer (his story, at least.) Can totally understand why someone would think Yoshitaka Amano designed everything before FF7 though .
To add on to the Marvel Vs Capcom bit, MVC1 also introduced “Special Partners”, they are randomly selected between each match, a perfect description of this is like what if Smash had Assist Trophies you could select to summon a set amount of times before they all run out until the match ends, some of the Special Partners include Arthur from Ghosts ‘N’ Goblins, Devilot who is also from Cyberbots like Jin, Anita returns as well from Darkstalkers, and from the Marvel side we have Thor, Jubillee and a couple other previously playable characters, this was a good compromise on Capcom’s part in my humble opinion. Here’s a video on the history on some of these Special Partners. ruclips.net/video/DAGe9H8g0nw/видео.html
There was almost a game called Sammy Vs Capcom. It was a crossover between the 2 companies. Its existence was rumored around 2003 and was formally announced later that year but then disappeared. It ended up being shelved after Sammy Corp merged with Sega in 2004, and corporate restructurings made what the new Sammy Sega holdings actually owned hard to parse for a while.
I swear everything now is getting a Dynasty Warriors crossover game like we got: Hyrule Warriors (The Legend of Zelda x Dynasty Warriors) Fire Emblem Warriors (Fire Emblem x Dynasty Warriors) Persona 5 Strikers (Persona 5 x Dynasty Warriors)

Question do you like Easter Egg Crossovers? Things you would have to go out of your way to find? Crossovers that aren’t forced since it’s not really the core of certain games. For example in Kirby’s Dreamland 3, Kirby can fight Metroids and even meet with Samus however it’s very brief, in Donkey Kong Country 2 Cranky’s Video Game Heroes are Yoshi, Link and Mario. Last example is DK in Punch Out for the Wii.
@Senritsu} {Jumpsuit Not necessarily looking for immersion. It's hard to explain but I feel like "tonal cohesiveness" is what I like. And in my head, throwing in crossover characters messes that up. It totally not the most rational reason and I recognize that.

And the Disney stuff is front and center for the majority of the game, making you forget what's even going on, but then the final hours of the games are its own thing, making all the Disney stuff pointless. The only exception I'll make is 358/2 days (can anyone explain what the /2 means?). I haven't played the game and I won't, but I have watched the cutscenes in the collection. Funny how the story of the cutscenes, no FF, no Disney, just its own thing, is the best story the series told
The fact that a lawyer could end up in a fighting game and still feel like himself really opens the door to so many other crossovers down the road.
Phoenix Wright is such a fun addition to MvC.
That's why he should be in Smash.
