The Manta Ray was my very first 4wd buggy; bought it back in 1990. I had done a custom red with black tiger-stripe paint job on it, and called it the "Manta Devil" hehe. I recall I put full ball-bearings from Tamiya (NOT CHEAP! lol), a carbon chassis upgrade, a Novak esc and a Parma Cyclone II 11-turn brushed modified motor in it. It positively flew! Surprisingly enough, I don't recall anything breaking on it! So yeah, very fond memories with this one.

Glenn back in the day, i was looking to get a Manta Ray, and mum n dad said would only pay for the QD version, which i really wasn't happy about! lol. Long story short, they surprised me crimbo morning with this proper hobby grade Manta Ray and i kid you not, i was jumping around the living room almost in tears with happiness!! I actually almost smashed it to pieces by almost landing on the box as i was jumping up n down!! haha!! I spent 2 days hibernating in my bedroom building this beauty and those memories are utterly irreplaceable for me Glenn! It's the one thing i miss so so much about childhood, times like that...Thanks as always Glenn! Nostalgia is Golden...Wes, Liverpool, UK

This was my first Tamiya buggy after I built the mud blaster so will always have a special place in my heart, it’s great to build too and goes together really well. I agree 100% that it looks better in white than silver, I painted mine white back in the day and is one of the very few times I’ve deviated from box art and it looks great, it’s one of those kits that looks better in the plastic than any photos. I’d build it stock to start with then steadily apply hop ups to see the difference they make as you add them. Looking forward to seeing the build and running videos for this one.

  • @TachyonDriver

Build it stock, but ball raced and build it as a runner. Keep the stock wheels & tyres unless you want to race it on carpet. The Manta Ray was my first 4x4 buggy bought at Woodvale model airshow in the early 90s. I'd had the F150 Ranger some years beforehand though .. I used the stickers but instead of silver I painted the shell a metallic blue. I replaced the mechanical speed controller with an aftermarket ESC upgraded the motor with some kind of Team Losi (I forget the amounts of winds) and went racing at a club which met at a school sports hall in Chorley. I fitted some wide 3 spoke wheels with mini pin tyres and had a blast!. A sea fret at Formby put paid to the electronics and I dumped the car in a box to be forgotten about. However, I found the car recently in a box in my attic, contacted Gavin (RCKicks) and sent it to him for scrap, part out or whatever. He's going to be restoring it this year! You would have been next on my list, Glenn despite the excessive shipping to Canada.

Glenn, i bought my son one 2 years ago
Like i mentioned in the FB group, this was also my first RC back in the days.
When i was building my sons Manta, i only installed ball bearings and changed every screw with M3, drilling deeper holes and threading is a big plus, i also used longer screws. Beside that, i didn't upgrade anything, not even the prop shaft (ok i was running stock motor and Nimh). I didn't even change the motor mount. Now, imagine how a 7yo boy drives, its all about bashing and jumping😂😂😂, beside some rounded off spurs and idlers we didn't manage to break anything. Why im telling you this, i think you should build it as it is and run the hell out of it. Just to show what a beating those chassis still can take 👍
    Cheers and thanks for sharing

Manta Ray is the first Tamiya car I ever had contact with back in the day. 2018 re re was one of the first things I bought when I got back into the hobby, that and a Top Force. I went box art then bought a terra scorcher shell to paint up to use when I run it.

This was my best friends car back in the day and it cleaned the floor of our then Terra Scorchers and Thundershots. We ended up upgrading to Boss Cats and Lazer ZX's to keep up (and ultimately pass after a lot of upgrades).
I'd love to see this in metallic black with the black Top Force shocks. I remember seeing one back in the day like that and it was superb, mega stealth. It had black spoke wheels although I can't remember what they were from.

Had the original Manta Ray. Raced it from stock and modified it when I could. I always remember Jamie Booths Manta Ray (looked like a Top Force but I believe it was essentially a Modified Ray). It would be great to see how simple mods in stages to see the difference would be. My first mod was bearings (from memory). Keep up the good work, love watching your vids 👍🏻

I like the idea of doing it stock. Then running it and upgrading it. Just to see if there is an advantage to spending. I think most of the upgrades we do just make the cars more reliable over time rather then performance. But as most of the cars get very light use is any of it worth the spend.?

always build the kit stock with bearings, no need to disassemble the entire car just to add bearings, then drive the car stock to appreciate the way it was intended. Once you've realized what needs to be improved, do the mods one at a time so you can see what advantage each mod does and you will get the most enjoyment out of each modification. When you add all the mods at once you won't get a sense of what each mod did or if any improvement was made. Finally the only reason I would install stock bushings is if I never intended to drive it and it was to be a shelf queen forever and even then I'm on the fence. But whatever you do I will watch so have fun.

I like the idea of a time trails box stock, then timed again after a couple upgrades. Timed again and again to see what upgrades make the difference and what are just a waste of money. I know there are people out there that swear by this kit. I just didn't see it but would like to.

  • @simost2566
    @simost2566 3 года назад

Always found the front shock tower was weak on the original Manta Ray, tended to fracture at gearbox mounting. I swapped it for an Alloy mount, eventually changed the bathtub chassis for the twin deck GRP, turnbuckles, bearings, composite prop shaft, HPI wheels. By the time you do diffs, speed controller etc It gets to a point where it’s closer to being a Top Force.
Seems like a ball bearing upgrade would be nice for smoother running, certainly
the shock tower, and perhaps some wheels and electrics etc, but otherwise leaving it stock would be in keeping with the classic kit.

  • @cjbainbridge
    @cjbainbridge 3 года назад

If you think it looks better in white, then do it in white... anything but box art!
Other than that just have fun with it, put a driver figure in it, do a tinted windscreen, upgrade it over time, see how it goes around the track, maybe go to different shocks and the FRP chassis eventually, etc. Any of those sort of things would be pretty cool.

Hey Mr Tamyia Legends (sorry I forgot your name) I'd just like to to
thank you deeply and profoundly for being there for me. I was raised to
be a "mans mans" and with the utmost non disrespect, RC cars and the
like were in my world deem to be a child's realm, toys for childish
should-be men. What you and the other on this channel have provided me
is a community, a family, of like minded people that help me to feel not
so alone, a freak. It sounds over dramatic, but it isn't, you have
helped saved me from self-deletion, even though thoughts of such still
haunt me. I Love RC cars, I have fond memories of racing them, tingeing and fettering them as a youth ( with
very little success, in the early 90's) but the thought of Sunday
afternoons amateur local community centre meets kept me going through the week.
Thanks. I know you done them before, but for me 'The Midnight Pumpkin''
was as still is the ultimate RC car, fun, mad, flawed, wheeling madness but awesome. I
enjoy whatever you choose to do with your projects, please keep it up
and thank you deeply.Heresy I know on this channel, but for me, the RC10T was the greatest of all time. Please keep creative with your builds and sharing the joy of this hobby with us all here.

I’m just getting my Manta Ray out to build! I’m in two minds on route forward but I do have a spare set of Top Force HiCaps that will go on it as well as bearings. I’m hopping up but not too much as my TopForce build will be a special one to.
I’d like to see the blue/black Manta Ray. I’ve just used smoke backed with PS4 on my DF03 and that gave a deep dark blue/black colour so what about something like that?
Think I’d like to see it stuck with the bath tub chassis as so many Mantas get the fro of carbon treatment.
What about old skool fluorescent colouring?

Metallic black, candy red, gunmetal,TRF custom without the standard decals as I think they wouldn't work + I think the wing decal is all you end up focused on? I'd fold some paper and centerline on a trf wing, trace one side and transfer to the other for symmetry, I think you can do it with your new tape and a pen to outline on the protective film! I don't mind the pattern, just have no interest in blue and pink! Lol, have you seen the Porsche by singer? Think it's called acs, on par with the 959 but uses a 911!:)

Last weekend charged the battery for 16 hours on trickle charge. While waiting ordered a 2nd battery and fast charger.
Following day took it as battery had charged, 2 minuets later im walking back in to house with it as one of the red front uprights has snapped around the ball joint 😳 Found Modelsport in Otley who have replacement aluminium ones and now just waiting for a delivery and then more time fiddling which is exactly what want to stop me staring at a pc screen.

Start as stock and use this car as a tutorial on how to take your first car and upgrade it, show the process for example and then you have the one car, used as examples of how it changed over time, using your own footage as the example of why your suggesting what youre suggesting?
