  • English setter training series is finally here! Máquina our pointing machine has been a long anticipated addition to our pack here at DogBone. If you have followed along with us, you know that we have traditionally trained retrieving breeds. Now, it is time to get into the english setter training world, and I'm excited to share the journey of training my first pointing dog. Will there be differences? Absolutely. Will there be similarities? Most definitely. At the end of the day a dog's a dog, and with any dog, the foundation comes first.
This series will be different from any other we’ve done for a variety of reasons. What won’t be different is that it will be real, raw and unedited. We share the good, bad and ugly knowing they they all are important in order to make progress with a pup.
Will she point? Eventually yes, I’m sure of that. Until then, we are enjoying every minute of her “being a puppy” and by that I mean an english setter puppy that makes good choices and is exposed to and held to the standard of behavior we expect. Discipline is not a negative word. Discipline earns freedom.
In this second episode, we are working through our second attempt at place training with Máquina, which many told me I would not be able to do with an english setter. I'm confident we will prove that theory wrong in this english setter training series.
As always, thank you for your continued support, and we hope you enjoy our new pointing dog training series... "Make the Machine".

I like the narration. Thanks for the extra time this takes-I have learned so much about how a dog “thinks” from your training.

I bought one of your place training cots. Well made, stable, light enough to easily move around and one of the best training tools ever!

I went through the same thing with my pup. I have been doing a round table of trading methods with him. I’m not a pro but I would like to get proficient at this…. Finn is really intelligent

I appreciate these videos because I’m planning on buying a dog and I really want to train a dog to be good and not destructive so I appreciate seeing what’s acceptable behavior and what’s not. Or how to train that.

Question - regarding the attention span, what’s the ratio of stimulus-settling drills like this with more stimulating stuff? Is her time outside for toilet etc the only time when she has high levels of stimulus at this stage? Thank you!

How many hours did you allow Maquina out of her kennel vs in the kennel in the first few days or weeks, excluding bed training?

In this video there was a couple of instances where she calmed down and settled. I expected you to mark the behaviour with a praise. Why didnt you? I guess it was to avoid further distraction?
Anyway, love your channel, ive shown your work to all my friends with retrievers. Congrats from Portugal!

Do you ever use clickers/rewards in your training to mark good behaviors? Why or why not?

I don’t use clickers, I will use food/kibble in some situations like early recall. I don’t do much as far as far treat training tho. I do use “reward” often but it’s primarily praise. My reasoning for this is the same reason I don’t use a shock collar…I think it’s leads to incomplete training once the treats or threat is the collar goes away. Just my thoughts based on what I’ve seen a lot with training.

so what is the ultimate goal of having the dog stay on the bed? Will this be something you will have the dog on all the time?
I have a new english setter(11 mo) and a 7 yr old lab. at the moment both are asleep at my feet. But she the ES will have a play time before she falls aleep.
