I heard _In the Garden_ after _Touch_. I was mesmerized by their psychedelic sound. This might have been continued if lack of support hadn't forced them to record an entire album in their demo studio...
This is so madly beautiful.... What a wonderful song. This took my breath away.... Her spirit is radiating & stunning.... i have a special fondness for this performance. The poster in the background.... The lighting is really beautiful in this performance. OGWT always was the best tv music platform for it’s non-commercial & intimate feel. Camera people who filmed it sincerely. They also were much more truly about art music. And soft spoken hosts with no OGWT theme song or annoying lights or loud audiences. And the music is live.
Clem Burke was a cracking drummer, probably still is,to be more specific listen to parallel lines he's got some natural instincts and superb timing, leads all through the lp
For a long time we only had a clip of this performance so it was great to finally hear the complete version a few years ago with the stunning vocals at the end of the song. In The Garden is an album that has grown in stature over the years and is quite unlike anything else.
Love this track! It doesn't really sound like any of their other stuff at that point, more guitar based straight up new wave rather than synth, though I've always loved their synth stuff too of course. It's just criminal that this fantastic single wasn't a hit for them...and Annie's wailing at the end always gives me goosebumps..such a perfect song.
Aaah! Whispering Bob Harris and The Old Grey Whistle Test - one of the few shows that were actual, full-on, live performances...only for those who could actually play their instruments and carry a tune (in those pre-Autotune days!).
That first album is what changed my mind about The Eurythmics. Took me down the rabbit hole with "The Tourists"....but what blows me away is....Mother F'n Clem Burke on drums on this video! WTF?!! (note: local ad for T. Webber Plumbing-They SUUUUUUCCCCKKKKK)
The Eurythmics already worked with Blondie's drummer Clem Burke at their beginning? Lots of hair, Annie! They were still Tourists then, still on their way to their own kind of sound...
Clem played on six of the songs on In the Garden. Jaki Leibezeit of Can played on three of the rest, and Robert Görl of Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft played on the remaining song - the original version of this.
A fan of the Tourists' . This early Eurythmics track sounds like them. The latter became far more commercial to make stacks of money. But for me this was the best time of the band.
They hardly went commercial unless you count "traditional" with BE YOURSELF TONIGHT. But even that was inventive. Prior to that the only commercial bit was the calypso style RIGHT BY YOUR SIDE but the entire album was so far different from that. You could hardly day NO FEAR, NO HATE, NO PAIN (no broken hearts) is commercial. I think they stayed true But managed to knock some hits out
@@googoogjoob5174 I totally disagree with you ! My original post stands , and note 6 years later you are the first to challenge it. I saw the Tourists in a tiny club = JB's Dudley in Summer 1979. An Amazing evening as I went to Birmingham after the gig and saw Simple Minds ! The Tourists had some limited success in the UK before they split and Annie and Dave formed Eurythmics . The debut album "in the Garden " released in 1981 had music similar to Belinda and "Never gonna cry again " . But the album bombed world wide despite in my opinion being excellent. I saw them play in a pub venue in Coventry in this period to around maybe 100 people ! I saw them again in 1983 just before "Sweet dreams" was released . It was clear that their music now had a far more "dance orientated " sound which was popular at that time. The rest is history that album made them a huge International band. I saw an interview with Annie around 20 years ago. She admitted that after "in the garden" they had to choose which route they would go moving forward . Carry on with the "new wave " sound of In the Garden or make the music more mainstream and commercial eg "love is a stranger " etc. . They chose the latter . No way would their music a la "in the garden" etc . have ever become commercially successful.
I stayed up to watch this, as a huge Tourists fan.. I thought early Eurythmics were at there best, that includes Sweet dreams album and I managed to see them in concert late 81 early 83 both were brilliant, and great to see Clem Burke on drums (83) concert. After that the singles were catchy but far to commercial
Does anyone else think this track is strongly influenced by Blondie? Close your eyes and you can also imagine Debbie Harry singing it. By the way, this isn't a criticism but a compliment. Both singers have fantastic voices......though Annie Lennox has greater range (in terms of hitting high notes aswell as low ones). But the Eurythmics first album has clear Blondie influences. Clem Burke (Blondie's drummer) appears on this track (and album). He also featured as drummer on their 1986 album 'Revenge'.
Dave's bass work seems influenced by Peter Hook. It's fascinating because frankly the song is a bit of a struggle to make work I'd think. Clem is giving it life. Annie is nowhere near what she was to become. Her voice is like someone just shouting on some bits.
I'm rediscovering "In the Garden" with this song and "Never gonna cry again". Honestly, I think their first LP had been underestimated.
It's a great album, very overlooked. Much more of a guitar / indie sound.
@@timothymartin6489 agreed. In the Garden is way more of a rocker than D&As later stuff
Totally

Fantastic track from the Eurythmics and great to see Clem Burke on the drums
He was one of the drummers on the 1st album while Blondie was on a break.
He isn’t Clem Burke, he’s Chris Stein !
You are wrong, Clem Burke is the drummer,
"In The Garden" is a fantastic album.

Annie is the greatest singer in the world !
Just listened to In The Garden and its a nice bridge album from The Tourists to the "Sweet Dreams" Eurythmics sound.
...incredible...beautiful song...the band had such a great "post-punk" sound on In The Garden...
Those of us there at the time called it "new wave"
What a beautiful musical tapestry Dave & Annie have woven with 'Belinda".
This song, this album, are so good. Annie is so powerful.
Love to see Annie doing her own "new wave" dance at 3:00 min mark - In the Garden in an amazing album...
Wow never heard this before & my name is Belinda! : )
Clem Burke was a cracking drummer, probably still is,to be more specific listen to parallel lines he's got some natural instincts and superb timing, leads all through the lp

I loved annie and dave together best.
Excellent print! Thank you so much for posting! "Belinda" is one of my favorite songs by Eurythmics; it still stings that it didn’t chart as a single.
What a gem! young Annie barely knows how to use her voice here, so inspiring to see how she matured into a beast that can knock out the Gods in 2015
Clem is playing drums!!!! Yes!!!!!
I love ”In the garden” my favorite album by them. They Never made another one like it.
Beautiful… Beautiful performance.
Thank you for sharing

Sounds like a leftover track from their Tourist days.
STUNNING! Fantastic version of an excellent song.

VERDADEROS MAESTROS E INSPIRACIÓN DE MUCHAS BANDAS!!..🌟🎶✨ 🎧😎👍🎶✨
Yes
Love this song and the album
Have a nice day
annie in her prime,just stunning
Un'altro piccolo capolavoro anni 80

Great stuff. Thanks for posting!
Thank you! So fantastic to have this restored!
Heartful thanks for uploading this and sharing it. I had never seen it before. With eurythmic thanks. xxx ECHI
Wonderful quality here thanks for posting this! This is a great rocking track that echoes the Tourists and foreshadows Revenge.
The tone on Dave's bass
Talent plus high style!
She's fantastic!
Is that Clem on drums?!!!
Yes.
Absolutely.He is a genius.
she's eternal....
Most underrated band ever
Clem Burke is incredible! The Tourists had potential but the Eurythmics realized it.
Yes! AND Jaki Liebezeit even more incredible on the studio recordings!
Still haunting and enchanted ❤
Amazing! This song sounds like an influence on the early Stereolab, doesn't it?
Jaki Leibezeit of Can plays drums on the studio recording of this song would be a good connection to Stereolab.
I think it was Robert Görl (DAF) on the record and production Conny Plank off course. Conny Plank is the Stereolab influence. ;-)
YESSSSSSSS
their first single. love it. i have this album--in the garden, she only had hair in this area, she's had a shaved head every since/.....
... АНЯ, ТЫ ПРЕКРАСНА...)))
Soooohappy right now!!!
great !!!!!!
Энни Леннокс как всегда очень красива!!!
Huh, thought Dave would be playing lead rather than bass on this... Great tune!
Just loved Adam & the Ants.

Que guapa estaba en ese momento y su pelo no tan corto. ❤
The drummer is Clem Burke??? The Blondie English style?
Annie Lennox!!!
It's amazing how ordinary she looks with ordinary hair....with short platinum hair she becomes exquiste....the power of hair and makeup.

I get it x
I think they really went back to their roots with "savage" in 1987
Clem!!
Is that Clem Burke from Blondie on the drums?
yes
Cool
Annie Lennox was brilliant, but both scary and sexy😲
Wow who is the girl? 😍On keyboards
Sinjinator, Penny Tobin
@@markc1990 She's talented and a real honey too !
Aye. My more famous namesake
NOT ONE OF HER OR DAVE'S BEST PERFORMANCES IN MY OPINION. TRUE GEMS THOUGH.

Yesss! An awesome song!
Now I can say "No, Belinda with a B, like the Eurythmics song."🤔
#notMelinda
Pinglan!
Ohhhhh and by the way Chris Stein is a guitar player , who is in Blondie along with Clem Burke.
CLem Burke from Blondie on drums and a riff that sounds rather like Into the Valley
Dave's bass work seems influenced by Peter Hook. It's fascinating because frankly the song is a bit of a struggle to make work I'd think. Clem is giving it life. Annie is nowhere near what she was to become. Her voice is like someone just shouting on some bits.
Odd it sounds like head over heels Belinda Carlisle and the go gos.
Gets a bit boring , she starts singing like grannie Lennox
surprisingly weak vocals by annie the great
Clemburke is not very good , discuss .
