  • Academy Award winner Regina King on the importance of IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK's wig scene.
    Director Barry Jenkins’ ambitious follow-up to Moonlight adapts James Baldwin’s poignant novel about a woman fighting to free her falsely accused husband from prison before the birth of their child.
    From the director of the Oscar-winning Moonlight comes a plunge into a world of Black love, with all the pain and the joy that can go along with it. In his third feature, Barry Jenkins draws deep from the well of James Baldwin, whose profound insight into African Americans' unique place in American society serves as inspiration for this gorgeous tone poem on love and justice.
    Tish (KiKi Layne) is only 19 but she's been forced to grow up fast. She's pregnant by Fonny, the man she loves. But Fonny is going to prison for a crime he didn't commit. As the film begins, Tish must break the news to her family, and his. Tish's mother, played with heartbreaking depth by Regina King, soon must decide how far she will go to secure her daughter's future. As Fonny, Toronto's own Stephan James gives a career-best performance of both grit and grace as a young man deeply in love but furious at what has befallen him.
    Jenkins reveals the layers of conflicting motivations in a filmmaking style that approaches music - dipping into Baldwin's elevated language and following his characters with unabashed devotion, fully capturing the texture of '70s New York.
    If Beale Street Could Talkis without doubt a romance but it's stronger than that because it refuses to indulge fantasy. Infused with Moonlight's deep lyricism and Medicine for Melancholy's flirtatious spark, Barry Jenkins's latest shows him to be our most clear-eyed chronicler of love.

      @@malyndahsexotics1543ENDING IN THE BOOK: Sanchez, the woman who accuses Alonzo, goes mad and has a miscarriage after speaking to Mrs Rivers, so she is taken away further hidden into the country, to a small hamlet somewhere. So the prosecution doesn't have a witness now, so they set out a bond in Fonny. To get the money, both fathers have stolen at their jobs, Frank is caught and loses his job, so he gets drunk and commits suicide. Fonny gets put in solitary because of a fight to avoid getting raped in prison. Tish goes into labour. So, in the book, I take that he will eventually leave jail because the bond was finally paid at some point and Fonny will work as a carpenter, not exactly as an artist as he wanted prior to being in jail. He and Tish will manage to be together eventually, but it won't be a happy occasion, as everyone has changed and suffered too much along the way. The ending is quite open, so I guess this is my interpretation of the book. We are told that they almost have the bond money, but then Frank gets caught, and everything else happens. But I do believe that the possibility of parole is still there, as there is no way Sanchez comes back to testify. Whatever percentage the Rivers are missing from the bond, at some point they will manage to get it. But as I say, this is my interpretation of the open ending. You will have to read the book to agree or disagree with me.

    I spent most of this movie hyper focused on her performance because she was the frontrunner for the Oscars (pro tip avoid knowing which roles are hyped up in movies if you can, makes it more pleasant to decide for yourself who did the best job) and for most of it I wasn't sure what was up. Then this scene came along and I suddenly knew why she was getting that hype. I definitely think she shouldn't have won the Oscar, she was the best in the supporting actress category but Olivia Colman should have been in it for The Favourite rather than being nominated for best lead.

      Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens by birth. Anyone born there is born a U.S. citizen. If one travels to Puerto Rico, one does not exit the U.S. nor enters a foreign country. One doesn't even need a passport to enter Puerto Rico (or any other U.S. Territory) if travelling from a U.S. airport . Alaska and Hawaii used to be the same before they became states, and were never considered as different countries. Even when Pearl Harbor was attacked, Hawaii was not yet a state and wasn't considered a different country.

    • @TheLWord75
      @TheLWord75 3 дня назад

      Puerto Rico is under U.S. control but NOT part of the U.S. The Supreme Court has issued prior rulings regarding the island's relationship with the mainland. Although it's a territory, it is also a nation, not a nation-state. The island's culture, language, social norms are distinct from the rest of the U.S. and its other territories, hence the development of a national identity/status apart from the 50 States.
      Furthermore, what Regina is trying to relay is the history of black tourism in the United States before the Civil Rights era. The Oscar-winning film "Green Book" covers African Americans' limited options when traveling domestically. They would have to refer to a well known travel guide for African Americans titled "The Negro Motorist Green Book" which had a green cover (hence "Green Book") which allowed Black American travelers to travel safely and find accomodations when driving throughout the U.S., especially in the Jim Crow ruled South. As Regina said, most black travelers traveled to "other" countries were predominately black such as those in Africa and the West Indies, because they were safe, accomodating to them unlike those in the US. Traveling to Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory with a Latin American identity and that spoke Spanish and not English, in the past was mainly for wealthy Americans looking for sun and fun and islanders returning to visit their families after moving to the mainland. It was very rare for a single African American woman to venture into any other destination (whether independent or not) where the language and norms found in 1960's Harlem NYC were non existant. It took a person of courage to travel outside of their comfort zone.
      That person was Sharon Rivers, Regina's character in this film.

      Yes, but the spirit of what she's saying is that "black Americans didn't leave the contiguous United States," since intercontinental travel is a a more expensive luxury typically not afforded to working class black people of the era. She uses the word "country" to communicate that more effectively, but I understand how that can be particularly annoying to people who live in the non-contiguous areas of America who struggle to feel included.
