Drugs/irrational drug policy. Drug addiction is a disease and should be dealt with as such. Still we love you Uncle Mackey, that's a heck of a jam sesh they got goin on in heaven.
In spite of his inner pain and turmoil, Mackey gave us his joy which were his songs and voice. His heart essentially. And through the sacrifice of his own life, he opened our eyes to the serious issues of mental illness and addiction and the changes that needed to be made to help the thousands of people who struggle with this relentless disease. People only now realize what a treasure he was and will always be. Rest in peace Nightbird. Rest in song.
@@imhlpme I believe this is the one written to a girl while in prison telling her to wait. If you listen to the lyrics he's talking through a kite." Nightbird fly on Sing her my song"
He was such an awesome guy. I was just out of high school when I first met him (1984). I remember just staring at him thinking to myself, "this guy looks so familiar." He just smiled, and what a bright, beautiful smile he had. I turned to my cousin and said, "doesn't he look just like Mackey Feary?" She said, "go ask him." I think his smile put me at ease, and gave me the courage to ask. I said, "is your name Mackey Feary?" He just nodded and smiled again. I said, "I am such a huge fan. I grew up listening to your music. You're awesome." With his bright smile, he said, "Thanks, I really appreciate it." His words sounded so genuine and heartfelt. I saw him a few more times after that and I would wave and say, "Hey Mackey!" And with his beautiful smile, he would wave back with a nod. I'm so grateful he shared his talents with the world.
i first saw him and kalapana at the Y.M..C.A. in Gardena ca.I went with my sisters and ive been a fan and hooked on all there music R.i.p.Mackey.What a HUGHE lost for this world.im just happy i was on the planet with Kalapana and i will always have the memory of there music to take with me on my journey in the sky also miss my mom sooooooooo much as well i hope you are listening to his music up there and everything is perfect mom.i miss you and love you everyday more and more mom.your son ANTHONY NACCARI......
Yuppp! Went school with Greenwood and Macky. Those were the years. I wish everyone had a chance to see how music was really great and mellow. Not so much violence that the other stuff brought out in later years. Robin and Greenwood still doing something good keeping it together. Macky- I wish you still were here! Remember you from Pukalani Street days. The Feary's had one talented family. Either sports or music. Or both. And didn't forget mama working at V.I. for ages
Mackey and Malani used to play at Pearlridge Monterrey Canners back in the eighties. I seldom saw them both together (one or the other would be out sick leave) but they could sure put on a good show by themselves. I miss them both.
Timeless. After All these decades. Few have even come close ImHO to their sound, musicianship and songs that you always want to listen to- now days you can listen and share it with the world.
I still listen to his music never get tired of it ,all the new stuff don't really move me like his and CandK. Old school I guess .but it's all I need.😁and great vid thanks .
never knew you personally uncle.. but you had such a beautiful voice.. makes me cry because it was such a waste of a wonderful man.. rest in peace uncle Mackey❤
This takes me home so hard. This was a staple radio song back home. Now that I'm older and found this video I am taken with the guitar playing, that voice and what a handsome kanaka he was
Thank you brother mackey for sharing your Hart and love though the music, the people of Hawaii will always remember you, see you in heaven my brother, god bless you.❤
Today (2/20/15) makes 16 years since dear Mackey has passed. "fly on..." as he sings here in Nightbird and as it also is engraved on his grave right here in beautiful Kaneohe. Looking forward to hearing you sing live again John 5:28, 29.
Such a beautiful song, and so nicely done by Mackey! Everytime I hear him, it brings me back to those days in the islands when life was simpler, and good music was all around...
You'd be shocked to find out how many young musician/singers in Hawaii don't know this song. I was pleasantly surprised that a solo guitar/singer in Kona sang this for me and my new bride for our first dance at the hotel where we were staying.
I so love this song. Mahalo John, always wonderful to hear his voice. Sounds much better this time around, almost like back in the day, thanks to you! How can you not love his voice???
Such amazing talent... such a tragedy. This guy was amazing.. drugs are the devil. Apparently the only time I got to go to one of his concerts was when I was in my mom's belly... Must made an impression cuz I've always loved his music
I remember hearing "Naturally" in bro's car, watching people jump off of the mountains on the north shore wearing those rickity looking Hang glider's, seems like a really long time ago. C ya Mackey...
Crying my eyes out!!!! I miss you Mackey Feary. Thank you for sharing your beautiful soul and your beautiful music. Love you forever and ever 🩵
In the Philippines Nightbird is one of the most iconic song.
I just discovered them on spotify. And learning of him, this video made me cry. This is such a farewell song for him.

Thanks for this. I loved Mackey and Kalapana in my teens. RIP, what a loss to the world
The most creative people always seem to struggle the most within themselves
I agree. I've noticed a lot of the most brilliant, inventive, creative people also have to deal with depression, addiction, pain, etc.
@@paxukulele Yes..and very sad to lose such sensitive people so young
