      or right on the beach,, Nj had these stories all the time if more then 60% or so of home damaged it was demolished ..mother nature now rules.. they also tried rebuilding beaches, caused more problems

    and the bankers and morgage companies and real estate firms are as much to blame as well, they make a fortune off selling beachfront property and then when the home falls into the ocean, its " oh well not my problem". its a big tijme racket including the insurance companies

    These are the people that thought they own the beach when you went fishing and they would chase you out of there telling you to get off of their property and get off of my beach just couldn't of happened to a better bunch of people

      Yep. I had the exact same experience when I was there. I even got the police called on me even though I was on the public beach, so I know what you're talking about. The real problem is these entitled people could try to get friends at the state government to fix all the damage using our tax dollars. People need to keep their eyes on them and keep them from dipping their dirty hands in our tax dollars.

      I haven't had that issue in Florida yet but here in Michigan same issue except it's lake Michigan and lake Huron causing made erosion and all these lakeside mansions falling into the great lakes. A few years ago my wife said I would take vacation up by the lakes and I remember on summer we were swimming in the water and all of a sudden comes this entitled ssshole yelling at us to get off his beach sicking the sheriff on us
      His house this past month fell into lake Michigan. Couldn't happen to nicer people

    I live in Broward county, 8 miles inland, and paid 9K for homeowners insurance this year (not including flood). I can't imagine what it's going to cost next year.

      I live in Florida, but IAM at least 40 miles inland, and I can't get insurance, they want me to put on a new roof, my roof is fine, so I have no insurance, scary!!

    Kings Tide, High Tide, Hurricane Ian sand erosion, continual high tide against the leftover sea walls, and the westward winds that reached all the up to the carolinas were all factors of the inward push of the ocean as well as the intercoastal waterway/Halifax river onto the west side (US1).

      I agree. With an RV park were its sandy and too close to danger by the waters, make it so homes are further inland and mobile campers and RVs can park. I would think the traffic could help pack down the sand also.

    I saw documentary of the Mediterranean Corsica Island few years ago and there few homes are just inches away from the beach where they are at least few hundred yards away before. The owners took the large amount of that loan to buy the property but the property is all gone. And that was already a few years ago and now it's here

      Yeah, My in-laws lived on a farm in England. The owners was a Brewery heiress. Her ocean front home on a cliff disappeared 30 years ago. She was so tight she had the house taken apart and the lumber used on her farm and all the old homes she was buying up as "shelter for her farm help". In Florida the palm trees and oaks are dying due to saltwater intrusion on both coasts.

      I live 40 miles form the beach mine is high I bet they do not have insurance or if they do it is real high a lot of people at IAN said they had no Flood insurance because of the cost

      Not only that but when they dredge up sand from the ocean to keep up with the erosion on the beaches, it destroys all the marine life around the holes they make. Also, houses and buildings built on a barrier island increase the erosion. Its a never ending cycle of destruction all the way around.

    God tells the sea how far it can go. Who's going to tell God to stop? Don't build your house's on shifting sand. Build it on the rock! If you build it on the sand expect what comes with the beauty that of the life you do enjoy. Don't be disheartened when it happens to you.

    And this is just a tropical storm. Imagine what a Cat 4 would do to that coast. Developers could care less about the impact on the future owners, they just rebuild bigger and bigger McMansions on the shoreline.
    I'd bet as Climate Change starts to really kick in insurance companies will no longer offer policies to such structures.

      If the foundation is washing away from under the house, as was the case with those houses, it doesn't really matter how well they're built. And this was just a Cat 1.

    Most places in OZ you're not allowed to build right on the beach. They leave the beaches alone, put a road along it and the houses go on the other side. When I visited the States I was surprised to see the houses in between the beach and the road so that you couldn't even see the ocean let alone get to it.

    Those houses are built directly on top of sand, are you kidding me? Obviously they don’t have proper building codes enforcement down there? Why would anyone purchase a house worth what millions of dollars that’s built directly on top sand? They should be built further inland to help prevent these types of incidents. That’s ridiculous.

    Watching intently how waves and strong currents eroded the foundation gives the Architects/Engineers how to do better to put a more resilient building against these worst hurricanes😨

      They ultimately need to stop building homes in these areas period. Good engineering can't fix poor planning for homes or buildings if they are placed in perpetually vulnerable areas to environmental destruction.

    As a kid I always wondered why houses on the shoreline were Soo expensive and desired. They can get flooded or swept away at any given moment. It isn't smart.

    I'm curious, why can't these homes be built on a barge like foundation, with outside supporting systems beefed up but, like a swing structure? Sand is shifting and such, so with a barge foundation the supporting process is outside, can shift as long as supporting columns are stout and can be skidded back by heavy equipment 🤔?

      Thats a good idea except storm surge. The barge like foundation is smart. pull the house back if the cliffs start to collapse. The barge can be transported by dolly wheels if needed.

    In 1951, what was left of Port Royal was hit by Hurricane Charlie, destroying more property and leaving only a few of the original buildings standing. Today most of the remains of the 17th century city lie under up to 40 feet of water.

    i imagine many of those who built those beautiful homes so close to the waters wished they hadnt.....the power of surge and wind ...this is a example of what can happen.........hofully they can rebuilt and if so futher back from water........its pretty to look at but this showswhat happens if your to close.......homes are built on sand...which doesnt take much for erosions to take place

    We have lived in Ponce Inlet for 30 years and only one other time we lost some beach & dunes ( SOME ). It repaired itself nicely. We’ve NEVER saw anything like this!! Emotionally draining and the folks that lost everything it’s a tragedy. Our hearts and prayers should be with them. Where do we go from here. Our own piece of heaven on earth. LW

      I watched video and was shocked homes built on sand. Lived NJ and California you live on the beach with mother nature constantly changing her patterns and you will lose your home.. Seen it for 60 years now.. i saw a show sand comes from canada and migrates down the east coast.. That was one cool show.. so if that happens you really think your home on the beach is safe?? yes sad and well you got reality..

    There is an old Portuguese rule to keep a set back from the bank of rivers. After the Rio Summit, India has brought the CRZ Regulations to prohibit constructions within certain distances from the High Tide Line. Violators are being hailed up.
    We cannot afford to play with nature.
    Strange that such elementary matters have been ignored in such advanced countries .
