I like how at the end of this part. After Archy takes the blame how him and Horatio look at each other, both of them dead-pan expressions on their faces to make sure Archy's sacrifice is completely effective. Brilliant writing, acting and directing.
Oh Archie! THAT my friends is an officer and a gentleman if ever there was one. The main reason that HH is so excellent a commander is because he has the love and loyalty of men like Archie, Matthews, and Stiles. They are a band of brothers, and always have each other's back. Bravo Arch! I will miss you.
the dude laughing at 2:39 is absolutely gut bustingly funny! I nearly shat myself watching him try to stifle a laugh at the "napping" Lefttenant Bucklands expense.
I love how the presiding captain interrogating Buckland clearly enjoys the response his comments have caused. So much so he smiles and follows up with another damning barb. It’s hilarious. The actor who plays Buckland does it marvellously
because, on top of being known as a captain whose ship was taken while he was asleep, he will also be known now as a man who would slander another out of jealousy
WTF, did Buckland just betray Hornblower? Funny how in the first episode, Buckland was calm, wise, and cool and then in the second episode he becomes a bumbling fool.
As far as who pushed Captain Sawyer, I have watched this part in reverse and he fell. No one pushed Captain Sawyer. They only show Hornblower's (?) shadow for suspense.
In the book, the question is never answered. Sawyer fell, only Hornblower and the midshipmen were in the area, and there was a suspected mutiny happening. When Hornblower was asked during the inquest over the mission, Hornblower lied in court. The TV show did venture from the books several times. In this case, they saved Hornblower from perjuring himself and losing his honor.
But why did poor Archie have to die? Oh, he was so brave to be willing to stand up and admit to something like that in front of everyone....also he was very brave and tough not to tell anyone he was shot. Oh my dear archie: "A million times I needed you A million times I cried If love alone could have saved you You never would have died" Your fans love for you archie, is always and forever.
It has gotten me thinking about in history books when one person was branded evil for killing some good and famous person, if they had even really done it. The men in the courtroom believe that they fabricated the story of the Captain's sanity to get out of mutiny, and Archie "confirmed" it in their minds. Perhaps the people in history who were found guilty of the crimes blackened their own name for the sake of saving lives. No one will ever know.
Great story, I'm still waiting for them to do the hornblower series. None of this Archie business was in the books it was Bush who Hornblower was developing a friendship with....but the contempt producers have for fans of original works is immeasurable.
@MajBlood Well it might be partly because this adaptation kinda made a hash of the book and its characters. In the book (Lieutenant Hornblower), there is no trial for mutiny, only a Court of enquiry, Sawyer is mysteriously found at the bottom of the hold, he is clearly loonie by that point and Buckland takes command without too much trouble. Buckland is a cautious careerist who cant lead and Hornblower and Bush have to save things. The book is very different from this.
Thanks. At least you're more polite than some guy from before. I suggested some kind of cancer, which I'm sure happened to some people even back then, and he went slightly ballistic. the stupid git. Thanks again.
Did Archie sacrifice the use of the doctor in favor of Bush? He sat calmly on the side lines while Bush was attended to, recall, there was a line to the doctor in those days, first come first served, and Bush wouldn've died if he didn't see a surgeon immediately. Poor Archie. I think that he gave his life for Lt. Bush and then he sacrificed his name for Horatio. Thats very brave of him...for he never really drew attention to himself. until then. By the way....NO ARCHIE!!!! You can't die!
"Did Archie sacrifice the use of the doctor in favor of Bush?" Maybe, maybe not. It wouldn't have mattered either way: Archie was shot in the gut: this was a fatal wound back then. There was no point bothering the doctor about it: he was dead, and he knew it. Bush's wound was serious, but non-fatal: the sword didn't nick his peritonium, so he was going to mend as long as the doctor did his job. The movie, while deviating from the book, does include this nice and very historical touch.
Which sort of begs the question, why did Horatio feel he had to cop the blame? If he didn't do it, why not say "No one pushed him, he fell"? Because obviously, if he did that, there would be no need for Kennedy's sacrifice. The mistake the movie made was showing the bit where Sawyer fell. If they hadn't shown it, you could assume maybe Horatio did it (which is the way it is in the book). But they show it, and he clearly fell without being pushed.
the court didn't believe he fell. Then Buckland made another mess of things by accusing HH so now the court had there mind made up that somebody was guilty. HH, Gentlemen as he is, wanted to sacrifice himself for bush and kennedy but the latter got there first because he realised he was done for anyway
@rayluca12 Nobody pushed the captain. The captain had a pistol out to shoot Kennedy, and was backing away from Kennedy (who it would seem was trying to talk to talk the Captain into givng up the pistol). As the captain backed up, he fell through the hole. Both Kennedy and Wellard reached out to catch the captain before he fell.
Correct. Archie however was concerned that Hornblower under honour would admit to a crime he did not commit. The silhouette of the person looking down the hold could have been anyone though it is assumed to be Horatio. The captina also claimed to have known who pushed him and the implication was as accused at the hearing
It means tissue death from the Latin. Note he smelled the wound? Wounds of that kind can fester and if not kept clean and covered with sterile bandages that are changed frequently, gangrene sets in. It has a wretched smell that is distinctive.
Why do they keep talking about Nelson as if he was dead? If this takes place sometime during the Haitian Revolution, it couldn't be any later than 1804 and Nelson didn't die until 1805.
I don't understand any of the characters in this episode. Buckland goes from cool to an idiot. Wellard to a bitch to a conspriator. Sawyer from a bastard to an insane man to a questionable man. And wtf is up with the doctor?
No one but he claimed later he knew who it was and implied it was Hornblower; in his befuddled state he "had it in" for his fourth Lieutenant. His abuse of the Midshipman was also unacceptable and the First Lieutenant should have stepped in. As it stands the only way to save the ship was mutiny.
i guess the reason why they want to Wellard to die is to give u the message to standby your elders even though u hate them...............its good its bad but its a movie............movies are propaganda
There is no greater gift, than a man will lay down his life for his brother. Archie Kennedy and Horato Hornblower were the best of friends.
That was incredibly powerful when Hornblower and Kennedy's eyes meet, true friendship encapsulated in a moment.
I like how at the end of this part. After Archy takes the blame how him and Horatio look at each other, both of them dead-pan expressions on their faces to make sure Archy's sacrifice is completely effective. Brilliant writing, acting and directing.

He died for his friend. No greater gift than a man lay down his life for his friend!
Here lies Buckland of the Renown, the man who was caught napping.
"Нет больше той любви,как если кто отдаст душу свою за друзей своих"
Евангелие от Иоанна 15:13.
How this episode should have ended...
Pellew: "We should not hang this man. We should promote him"
Hammond: "Why not both?"
the dude laughing at 2:39 is absolutely gut bustingly funny! I nearly shat myself watching him try to stifle a laugh at the "napping" Lefttenant Bucklands expense.
Yeah, that bit made me crack up.
I love how the presiding captain interrogating Buckland clearly enjoys the response his comments have caused. So much so he smiles and follows up with another damning barb. It’s hilarious. The actor who plays Buckland does it marvellously

I beg to differ…..it was professor plum and he did it with a banana peel lol
I was under the impression that Kennedy deliberately backed him into the hole. Whether he intended him to actually fall is another thing, I suppose.
poor old buckland goaded into indiscretion.the fly sounds at 4.20 are brilliant. the ambiguity around whether hornblower did push is well managed.
But why did poor Archie have to die? Oh, he was so brave to be willing to stand up and admit to something like that in front of everyone....also he was very brave and tough not to tell anyone he was shot. Oh my dear archie:
"A million times I needed you

While this fellow was dreaming in his bed
It’s a withering whip of a put down and absolutely hilarious
I guess Archie had to go fly vipers on the galactica so he had to leave the Renound
Poor Cpt. Sawyer, poor Mr. Buckland, poor Archie, poor Hobbes, poor Wellard, poor Hornblower, poor Archie............
Poor Archie I loved him so much and what he did for Hornblower that is true friendship.
When compare to the originaltext the playwrights did a great job of nipping and tucking the original work to create something great on a budget.
He's planning to die, taking the blame for the crime so Horatio goes free. Oh Archie :'(
It has gotten me thinking about in history books when one person was branded evil for killing some good and famous person, if they had even really done it. Archie's character really changed a lot. Remember how squeamish he was in the 4th episode?
LMAO - you make him sound like a vampire!! :-D
ahh that look between archie and horatio ..the moment the archie/horatio cult began.
what happoned to Oldroy from the first four movies?
Wow they sure know how to make you feel like shit in court.
@MajBlood

As most series/ movies are.
ARCHIE NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Thorakites Exactly. He said no sign of mortification, ie: gangrene, infection, or...
I imagine he was talking about dying flesh and cells.
The man who admitted to doing something is in fact dieing already.
great series...i can;t understand why they aren't making more
Qualities Up 'N' Down like a bloody SeeSaw.
I would say that could be as good as it gets.
@charisfulone
Ya, seriously I would've liked to have seen a few more episodes with Archie.
Thanks. At least you're more polite than some guy from before. I suggested some kind of cancer, which I'm sure happened to some people even back then, and he went slightly ballistic. the stupid git. Thanks again.
mr buckland is like rhe Gordon Brown of our day
Actually, Buckland wasn't there when the funny guy, Sawyer fell. He was making this accusation even though he wasn't sure who did it.
he was striking back at Hornblower to save his incompetent career
Thanks, even though it's already been answered. Basically the term, "mortification" is basically an old-fashioned way of saying "infection"?
Close. It means the wound has gone bad, which before antibiotics might as well be the same as infected.
@@colinmerritt7645 Thanks for clarifying.
Mortification = Gangrenous (almost a death sentence 200 years ago).
Did Archie sacrifice the use of the doctor in favor of Bush? He sat calmly on the side lines while Bush was attended to, recall, there was a line to the doctor in those days, first come first served, and Bush wouldn've died if he didn't see a surgeon immediately.

My favs character are Bush and Kennedy (poor him)
@TheCurtainCall Probably because he knew was done for, whether he received medical attention or not.
problem moved on in the books
It's great!
@rayluca12

ioan gruffud wants to make a movie of his own.
@gljohnson33 true, but in the flashbacks you can see that Archie is the one facing him so it is only fair that Saywer thought it was him
does any one know if they will make more of them
a true friend its a shame there its more true friends 2day.
WELCOME THE BAD-NEWS MESSENGER:)
From 4:00 to approx. 4:10, what does Dr. Clive mean by "mortification"?
It means tissue death from the Latin. Note he smelled the wound? Wounds of that kind can fester and if not kept clean and covered with sterile bandages that are changed frequently, gangrene sets in. It has a wretched smell that is distinctive.
What a waste of good wine...
7:37
souns like there's angry birds about the place!!!!
@HornblowerRules its horrible i want to cry.......but its reality..............
Why do they keep talking about Nelson as if he was dead? If this takes place sometime during the Haitian Revolution, it couldn't be any later than 1804 and Nelson didn't die until 1805.
Poor Archie. :(
Are those rat turds on Archy's bandages arouns 2:00.
There was a bug on Archie's shoulder at 4:19. D:
i dont get y archie didn't tell anyone that he was shot

poor arch..
@hermione838 ITS HORRIBLE TO KNOW THAT............ONLY GOD WILL REWARD THIER SACRIFICES
Oh come on, it's not nearly that bad.
I don't understand any of the characters in this episode. Buckland goes from cool to an idiot. Wellard to a bitch to a conspriator. Sawyer from a bastard to an insane man to a questionable man. And wtf is up with the doctor?
So who pushed the captain?

NO! NOT ARCHIE!
stress because of everything that happoned , shock, guilt because he accused Hornblower in court, and prob many other things
i guess the reason why they want to Wellard to die is to give u the message to standby your elders even though u hate them...............its good its bad but its a movie............movies are propaganda
LOL I CAN STILL SEE Wellard brieving XD Sawyer will have his head for bad acting XD
@WhiteRabbitm8te except his eyes arn't wonkey
@urquhart2001
