the television fee is actually based on our constitution. Theres the right for uninfluenced and free information. Therefore the state has to pay channels like ard, zdf, arte, phoenix etc. I think you need to mention that because, i feel like its mostly forgotten that its not just a random idea. And that's no secret... If you move to a foreign country you may want to look up what's the law or what are the social "rules" over there.
If I visit a foreign country, say the US, I inform myself before that trip e.g. how gas stations work there and do not complain about the differences to my home country.
As there is plenty of information about all this stuff online, I would categorize this video as "stupid Americans". Inform yourselves beforehand and you're good to go. 🤷‍♂

@@Rejo7ce It doesnt matter if you believe in the information provided.
If you dont like the truth maybe you should go to the the us and watch fox news, which provides far more comfortable lies.
Nevertheless the reason the fee is paid by everyone privately exactly is, that the government cant influence the publicly funded media by cutting its funding, if the information provided doesnt appeal to them.
They only have to be held accounteble by the law.
This system might feel like a scam to americans, but it only does, till you truely understand the alternative. Bought corporarte media who can tell the bigest bullshit ever and manipulate the masses towards supporting goals, which massively contradict their own intrests.

I would never leave my shoes on at someone else's place, unless I just come from jogging or from a hike or something like that. And while i wouldn't force people to take them off at my place, i would certainly ask them to do so, and if they refused without a reason, I wouldn't insist but I would probably not have them over again tbh. Or classify them as "garden friends" haha.

The payment for the public broadcast system (Beitragsservice) is not giving any discounts for people with disabilities like being blind or deaf. Before 2013 blind or deaf people for example paid only 50% - my grandma is deaf and we were informed by a deaf association that she has to pay the full price. The deaf association already hired several lawyers and tried to safe the money for the deaf people but the judges didn't help the people. The only reason to don't pay is a really low income below the poverty line.
Even if you are not in Germany for way more then 50% of the year you have to pay the full price because your house or rental flat etc. is still in Germany ...

Hope you don't mind the nit-picking here. Happy is spelled happiness. There is the Y rule. If a word ends in a vowel (a,e,I,o, or u) you keep the y and add whatever ending. For example play. The letter before the y is an a so you add -Ed to the end (played). Happy p isn't a vowel so you drop the y. I always liked it when native German speakers corrected my writing when I was learning German.

Agreed, I pay just for "Die Sendung mit der Maus" . Loved it as a kid.

    • @Cau_No
      @Cau_No 2 года назад

The "scam" is not the television itself. It's the way it is financed. And mixing up those two is the problem with the discussion.
After the wars, where TV was used as a big propaganda tool, the new Germany wanted to have an 'independent' media landscape, so decided to not have it funded by taxes.
But instead of having private networks (until the 80s, and which have other issues like profit motives, just see the US.) they conjured up this system of GEZ, which is now the "Beitragsservice", where everyone has to pay - originally only if you owned a TV or radio set, at home or in your car, then, some years ago every household.
But the tariffs and contents are still decide by committees - so the financial independence is a pretense.
Even right after the ARD was founded, it wasn't 'independent' enough for some, so they put together the ZDF as an 'alternative'.
The public networks are still like a monolith, outdated and inflexible, but secured its own survival with this scheme.
At least they put some older programs on ther mediathek which should have been available for long as they were already paid for by the German public.
Sadly, a lot of people use the license as a prtense to get rid of the media at all, because they don't tell them what they want to hear.
And they mess up sometimes, too, which again then is used as an argument against the whole system.
That's why the protests against the license are not taken serious anymore, even if they have them also in Switzerland, and hade some in GB which were just canceled shortly ago.

    Cats!! Dogs are sycophants!
The TV-radio license pays for much more than just the programs themselves. The larger TV-radio companies, for instance, maintain symphony orchestras, most of them of very high quality, and it keeps ticket prices at a (relatively) affordable level. You are also supporting maintenance of internet infrastructure. They also maintain the traffic information service that is broadcast for travelers. This is probably less important today as most people probably use their phones for navigation rather than the navigation systems in their cars, but the service is there.
I have been wearing house shoes for so long at home that the idea of wearing shoes in the house is more than a little odd for me. Slippers or house shoes are also a lot more comfortable! People in southern Germany and Austria in particular often have a number of pairs of slippers in various sizes for their guests.

@@steemlenn8797 Honestly I do not know any plugin that pays the webdesigner money in order to get clients cookie data. Usually you install a plugin in order to provide a service and for that cookies are placed on the clients harddisk.
As I said before, there are advertising methods that track your interests, clicks, the time spent on a website and so on in order to "improve" what ads are being shown, but the website owner does not get paid for the cookie data, but for the amount of clicks on the ads.
Is this a privacy issue? Sometimes yes, most times it's stored in an anonymous way and can't be linked to you as a person.
Should the user have the right do decide if he allows it? Yes.
Should you panic because auf cookies? Certainly not. There are many false assumptions about cookies by people without any real technical knowledge.

And anonymity is BS. Not least because your data is thrown around so much.
It has been shown again and again that even with fully "anonymous" data you can build a complete profile. And then it just takes one of those dizens or hundreds of companies to have your name. Like when you pay for something.
There is a reason why you get hundreds of pages if you ask e.g. facebook or google or Amazon about your data. It's the same reason why there is a "connect to offline sources" chapter in the cookie questions.

I think the fee is a bit too high, but it's not a scam because the public broadcasting and TV formats can be produced with the money, otherwise they wouldn't exist.
I think people should be able to decide for themselves whether they use and pay for it or not, and then don't have to pay.
Or that part of the tax revenue is used for this and there is no extra bill for it.

Private tv channels were allowed in the 80’s, under the condition, that public tv’s financing will be secure. Even if you don’t watch one bit of public tv, it needs to be available for everyone. That’s why everyone is forced to pay. It doesn’t get deducted by tax, because politics isn’t supposed to influence the program (it does).
The sheer amount of tv and radio stations, I find questionable. Also, what the money is spent on (who cares about Fußball? 😉). But I do like, that this system exists. When there is a crisis, loads of news sources place the real info behind paywalls. But I do know, I can rely on Tagesschau (the main news, 15 minutes at 8 pm) and Tagesthemen afterwards, if something bigger popped up. Pretty neutral reporting, and correspondents all over the globe. For that, I gladly pay.

Also, I live in the U.S (hopefully moving to Germany soon), I have gym shoes that are ONLY for the gym. But I do this, because I have specific shoes to lift weights and specific shoes to do kickboxing or spin; and I don't like using my other sneakers for anything else.

I always have the gym shoes in my gym bag and only put them on when arroving at the gym. Since I go to a small local gym we even have a storage for our gym shoes. So I could leave them at the gym and wouldn‘t have to always bring them. But I don‘t use that.

I think it is fine to have something like the public broadcast in Germany - and that it costs. I just think that the organisation for it is too big even if they already cut some programmes or put regions together - and I would finance it with taxes and not with a organisation like the GEZ.

I agree that there are too many stations / programms, but I wouldn't pay for it via taxes cause that'll give the government even more influence. I would vote for a fee with several steps (0€ for poor people, 5€ for low income households, 10€ for middle class, ...). Instead of telling them your exact income I would like to see the Finanzamt to simply give them the according "income class" of that household.
I think that way it would be a bit more fair and data privacy would still be intact.

Thats also why far right partys like the AFD want to get rod of them. Even if paying the fees suck, democracy is worth it.

About the Thing2, I was a child in the 80‘s and we were sailing across the Baltic Sea and in Denmark many farmers offered there products as you described the self cutting flower fields. And no one would ever take goods without paying. I am German, and somehow I like „stereotypes“ but in the funny way, because some of them are just true. Example free refills that system doesn’t work in Germany, Germans will stay the whole day at a fast food restaurant with free refill. Example two, „all you can eat“ works all over the world BUT not in Germany. Germans misunderstood that somehow as a challenge and they ate all( until restaurant owner go bankrupt). Read my text with a smile- with a touch of sarcasm - and not to serious.

What I like about cats is that they do what they want, and you can never educate them. You can make a dog obey to commands; try that with a cat, it's futile.

If I have guests in Germany as a German I would not ask them to put on slippers because they are my guests and I will clean after them.

It's money well spent, believe me! This way, we have a basic radio and television service that doesn't have to be maximally partisan and confrontational in order to get more viewers and sell more ads. German public television strives to offer a service without political stridencies. It may not succeed to be always unbiased, but it definitely has succeeded (and continues succeeding) in avoiding any openly partisan coverage. This is only possible, because its funding is secured by this extra-tax.
It has been amply shown that unhinged extremist positions and fake-news have a mucher higher entertainment value than well-balanced quality journalism. Because of this, a purely market-oriented media environment (like that of the USA) always runs the risk of overrepresenting the lunatic fringe while avoiding boring common-sense dialectics and more moderate positions. Instigating political unrest simply pays.
If you compare the growing identitarian divide between "conservatives" and "liberals" in the US with the rather more multi-faceted and less confrontational German political spectrum, you may appreciate the wisdom of our "tv-tax".

". It may not succeed to be always unbiased ..." LOL, it pretty much never is.
"This way, we have a basic radio and television service that doesn't have to be maximally partisan and confrontational in order to get more viewers and sell more ads."
LOL, "basic" it is the most expensive public pay tv service in the world, pretty much nobody asked for and it is partisan because funded by the state, directly or indirectly. Let alone that mainly politicians of the biggest parties have a seat in the board of directors.
"It has been amply shown that unhinged extremist positions and fake-news have a mucher higher entertainment value than well-balanced quality journalism ..." That is why it is so common in the German public television. Yet, they like to smear alternative media outlets with such claptrap. 😂If somebody tells you what you think instead of doing proper journalism, this guy must have an agenda.

The thought behind GEZ is to provide money for independent journalism, otherwise there would be only newspapers and tvshows who are biased through political agendas compareable to fox news in the USA for example. Also it is for financing tv shows that otherwise wouldn't be produced (diversity of content) or couldn't be produced (lack of money). So the general thought of the GEZ is great but I don't understand why it has to be that much (and even more now as you mentioned before). One problem is probably the cost for the pension of former employees that are getting higher the older the population gets but other than that there shouldn't be a problem with a reduced fee to finance the important things. 🤷‍♀️
Regarding the gym thing: because germans are used to use different shoes for gym from early age on (even in the gym of the kindergarden the kids have to wear special shoes) it is a really normal thing to do. Also if you visit a fitness studio with your streetshoes they often will make you pay a fine in case they catch you.
Regarding your question: Neither. I didn't grow up with pets so I didn't get attached to one specific kind.

If public broadcasting would be funded directly by the government nobody would discuss it all the time. Nobody says: Oh, I'm not female - why do I pay for a shelter for abused women? I don't use it. That's of course crazy. We are paying for so many things we don't use. I pay for mountain rescue even though I don't live anywhere near a mountain and always spend my vacation at the beach and so on. The difference with public broadcasting payments is that people need to pay this separately so they are highly aware of the costs. The reason is that after the Nazi era, the founding fathers of the German constitution wanted radio and TV that cannot be threatened by the government to revoke funding if they don't report favorably. That's what happens to the BBC currently. They didn't celebrate Brexit as much as Boris Johnson wanted. Now he's removing funding as a punishment. In Germany this cannot happen as easily. Now, why do we need this? Because it has a stabilizing effect on a democracy to get calm, independent reporting. And it's striking that the more politically extreme people are, the more they complain about this system. Last thing: Why doesn't public broadcast only show cultural and political things instead of seemingly worthless but expensive entertainment? Answer: Because those programs wouldn't be viable and couldn't compete with private stations. People watch a show and then keep the TV on for the news on the same channel etc. If you want powerful influential public broadcasting that can actually work as a stabilizing factor on pubic discussions and effectively combat extremism then you need to have a full-fledged program. Many people don't understand this or want to undermine this in order to shift public opinion to more extreme views. We see in the US how this can be dangerous to the existence of the country itself. To call this a "scam" couldn't be further from the truth even if you said it a bit tongue-in-cheek.

  • @AL5520
    @AL5520 2 года назад +1

First of all, congratulations on the new bsby 👶.
Es fo the TV licence fee, it's definitely not a scam.
I know that some hate it and Americans don't get it but a scam?
Your taxes pay for many things you don't like or use. An elected government in Germany (and in many other places around the world) decided that funding publick broadcasting is important and many of the citizens agree with this decision. They can, of course, finance it directly from the general budget but this opens the door for political influence on the content. The TV licence mechanism that separates it from the budget by law insures a steady uninfluenced funding that keep the public broadcasting independent.
This budget also replaces the need for commercials so rhey don't have to consider loss of incom when reporting on big companies.
In the UK and in the past in my country (Israel) the payment is conneted to usage (in Israel it was payed by anyone who owns a TV and in the UK you ned to pay if you watch live TV or content from the BBC in any form) but this complicates things as people try to cheet and the collectors try to use problematic methods to proove that you need to pay.
As for the question: I like cats but I prefer dogs.
