      Of course, it is almost always lowercase in E-Mails and letters too. The first sentence is a continuation of the greeting, so it is still part of the same sentence and if the first word is non-noun it will be lowercase in most cases. Notice the comma after the greeting?

      In addition to your quandary, the size of the bed is an issue. On TV, couples seem to sleep on queen or double size beds. OMG that would suck, you'd have no place to go with another person there. I say, a king size bed is the answer to a happy marriage. Throughout the night you choose to cuddle or not, repeatedly. And, you need a man cave, cuz guys really need that.

      There are also a lot of euphemisms for going to the toilet. You go „für kleine Königstiger“ (for little King-Tigers), or you go „für kleine Mädchen“ (little girls). Sometimes you go „den Kaffee wegbringen“ (to put away the coffee) or you must go „mal eben wohin“ (pop off to go somewhere).

    3:45 Instead of offering drinks for free, Americans should offer benefits like health care or other Social Security benefits for free.

      There you have a valid point I never thought about. That shitty chlorine fluid they serve you in US restaurants is disgusting. When I honour for dinner, I really don’t have a problem to order my drinks as I please, and pay for them. Mineral water served in a restaurant is not tap water. The restaurant owner bought it in the first place, so why give it away for free?
      A friend of mine has several pubs in Brighton, where he serves rather affordable pub food, which is actually really good. He always says: you can hardly make money with food. So keep it easy, big portions, and the people will spend their money on drinks. And we all know, once you had a few sherries, you don’t mind another one, and another 😉 And the Brits like their drinks when socialising.

    About #1: when you cuddle you just put a bit of one duvet over the other. No emotional border. You connect your covers.
    About #3: old men, immigrants and machos stand. If you wanna stand in my bath, you can look for another bathroom. However, standing in public toilets is normal. You sit when at a private residence (unless you think the owner is a filthy one who doesnt sit). Basically, if you dont know how clean it is, you stand. If you or your friend cleans, you sit.

    My wife and I use duvets of different thickness. No way we would ever go with just one.
    It is also by law, the "Mineral- und Tafelwasserverordnung", that Mineralwasser (defined by EU guideline 2009/54) always has to be served in a closed bottle and may only be opened at the table.
    That is why you get a small bottle when ordering just a single glass.
    Kinder is superior choclate if you eat just a piece or two. Ritter Sport is better for large amounts.

      If you want the best chocolate, take the train to Basel (there is a german train station where you technically are not crossing any borders) and buy swiss chocolate, especially the blonde chocolate that you can get nowhere but in Switzerland. That is chocolate on another level! The Coop in the train station has the same prices as anywhere in the country, so you don't have to go look for a specific store. Highly recommend it to everyone liking chocolate to try at least once. Also, you can currently use the 9€ Ticket to get there ;)
      Edit: I personally really like Villars and Ragusa as blonde chocolate brands. If I had to choose between Kinder Schokolade and Ritter Sport, I would almost never eat chocolate at all to be honest.

    As for culture shock #4: Starting the second line in lower case follows the german grammar rule, that a comma is always followed by a lower case letter (provided the word following that comma isn't a noun).
    There is a second form, though, not as common and somewhat less formal than the first one (so maybe less suited for a business letter), but also grammatically correct: If you make the greeting an exclamation (e.g."Hallo Leser!"), the second line would start with a upper case letter (since it starts a new sentence).

    Pro Tip: Car Sharing. You often get discounted rates if you have a Public Transport Subscription. If you dont need your car dayly thats worth a thinking.

    Regarding the random question: Kinder excels at treats that are a combination out of chocolate and something else (usually wafers) and Ritter is better on a pure chocolate basis. As for the water in restaurant, aside from a certain legal obligation (mentioned in at least one other comment) there is also the reason to pay for the service (since waiters don't rely on tips to reach minimum wage) and restaurants rely especially on beverages to make their profits. Aside from salads and some pasta dishes the profit margins are usally pretty slim in an average restaurant, which I only know because my father worked as a waiter as well as managed and owned a restaurant. I don't know if it is still a thing but when I was a child or teenager, we either had to go "groß" (number 2) or "klein" (number 1). Other ones for number 2 were also "eine Sitzung haben" or "ein Geschäft verrichten".

    Squirrels, here in Great Britain American grey squirrels were introduced about 150 years ago and have almost replaced native European red squirrels in the southern parts of the country. So, although we like to think of squirrels as little red animals with tufts on their ears, actually they are generally the grey ones.

      Regarding the squirrels, that's not completely true. At least yet. You find the American ones in the UK and in one part of Italy afaik. But our European Red squirrels can be black, grey or dark brown as well, despite their name. Unfortunately, some people don't know that and think they are American squirrels and chase off or hurt those differently colored European squirrels. That's also a reason for why many think that American squirrels are more widespread here than they actually are. Don't get me wrong, they definitely pose a threat. Just look at what American minks did to European minks. They are almost extinct in Europe now with only a few kinda isolated populations surviving....and that only barely

    Regarding #3, there are many phrases you can use to indicate what you are doing. Children would probably be taught the phrases "klein müssen" und "groß müssen" for this, or doing business (Kleines Geschäft, großes Geschäft). But there is a myriad of other ways. You wouldn't ever indicate this in a formal setting, so all phrases that indicate the difference are colloqiual. "Eine Stange Wasser wegstellen" would be only urinating, while "einen abseilen" would be defecating, for example. You could also "ein Ei legen". But this also hugely depends on region, and pretty much every sub-culture in germany has their own phrases for this. Which most of the time, all other german can understand by context.

I always used to cuddle with my girlfriend under both covers and sort of share both of them at the same time. It just is a lot more convenient during the night because when both people sleep they can use the cover according to their own preferences :). I always get really hot so sharing one cover sounds like a really horrible thing for me, however maybe it’s just since I’m so used to it as a german.

However as a professional and ruthless duvet stealer knowing that nobody and nothing can get it back frim me come wind or high water, the double duvet is the only way my partner and I can sleep in the same bed without me stealing and never returning the duvet. Intimacy is still intact and it is kinda cute when bf lifts his duvet to invite me in for cuddles. A single duvet would cause chaos and havoc as I have to admit I'm the problem. : D
    The equivalent for #1 would be "Ich muss mal klein" and #2 would be "ich muß mal gross"
    I prefer the sentence "Ich muss mal für kleine Königstieger" as metaphor for needing to go to the bathroom.

    In regards to number 2: "Eine Sitzung machen", probably because of the difference between N. 1 done standing and N 2 sitting. You have forgotten to say, that- if you go to a german restaurant and get your menu to choose, what you want to eat or to drink, you see the final prices including taxes and tip. In the USA you don`t see this. The non-carbonated water there may be free - but at least your bill is much more higher than in a german restaurant. The taxes are different in every state and even the expected tip is also higher than here in Germany.

    • @PassportTwo
      @PassportTwo  2 года назад

      You are definitely correct that taxes aren't included in the price in American restaurants and you are also correct that tipping is generally less in Germany than in the US (although remember, in the US, tips are still not mandatory and you could go your whole life without tipping if you really wanted to.), but this does not mean that your bill is going to come out lower in Germany in the end. In fact, in Oklahoma, it is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper to eat out than anywhere else in Germany, and we get free water and refills 😅 Cost of living varies greatly across the US and this is one of those things that is in fact cheaper in Oklahoma.

    In german emails the beginning of the adressing "Dear XX" is the beginning of the first sentnce. So, there are two possibilities: If the adressing end with a comma (,), the mail begins with a small letter. If it ends with an exclamation mark (!), then the mail starts with a capital letter.

      About water: it depends on the local quality of tap water. In the last decades overall quality was improved because of regulations and testing. That was not always the same. I remember times when we used "RheinUferFiltrat" which was water pumped from below the Rhein valley filtered by the sands. That was bad tap water. Washing machines broke down caused by chalk in it. Kids had more stomach problems when their bottles were made with tap water. We used "table water" not carbonated and had way less stomach problems with our kids. Since then the water source was changed (better for the machines and the kids). Today I would drink tap water. Usually local communities have information about the local situation.

  • @SvenGadgetKlemmbausteine
    @SvenGadgetKlemmbausteine 2 года назад

    1. So 2 duvets and 2 pillows are mandatory. And you also have 2 separate mattresses in most double beds in Germany. So everyone can choose their mattress that offers the best sleep. In addition, your side doesn't wobble as much when the other person turns around. I've always found it very distressing in the US when I have to sleep in a bed with another person (if you want to sleep).
    2. In most areas of the US, the water, which was free, was very often so heavily chlorinated that it smelled like a swimming pool. I never want to drink it and found the taste rather repulsive. However, it may vary from state to state.
    3. There are almost always urinals in public toilets, so you can pee standing up. At home on my own toilet I would never think of peeing standing up because I have to clean it afterwards. And it splashes and that's not nice. If people pee standing up in public toilets, you can see that very quickly because they are often very dirty.
    4. I've found that if you write too much unimportant information at the beginning of an email, some people then lose sight of what's important in the email. And I want to achieve something. Besides, I usually don't know the person on the other side personally. In Germany, only the reason is given for formal things, nothing more. The only thing you write is "thank you very much for the quick reply" or "I hope you can help me" etc.
    5. Yes, but both types are cute :-)
    6. Well, I live in Hamburg and I'm still happy to have my car. Of course you can do almost everything by public transport. But when, like today, I drove to the hardware store, the pet store and the supermarket. Then it would have taken me 3 times as long with public transport and I wouldn't have been able to buy everything I bought.

    Restaurants are actually legally obligated to offer free tap water. If you specify, that you want tap water, they will bring it to you for free. You're right, the drinks is how they make their money, so what I do, is usually, order 2 drinks. One free tap water, for which I will ask for refills throughout my stay, because eating makes me thirsty and these tiny bottles of water don't do it for me. And one other drink, which I will treat much more resourcefully, when it comes to reorders. So, one is for thirst, the other one is for enjoying. And by the way, it is perfectly fine to order a tap water, you won't get dirty looks (anymore, I think itused to be a bit like that, but I think that has changed quite a bit)
