  • What’s the connection between Hanukkah and Good Shepherd Sunday? More than you might think! In this week’s video on “Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes,” ‪@chadbird1517‬ will walk us through the origins of Hanukkah, explain how it was the festival context of John 10, and explore how the temple and shepherding and Messiah language of John 10 fits with Hanukkah. We will especially see how parts of the Torah, Psalms, and Prophets guide us to more clearly understand the Gospel in John 10:22-30.

Chad, thanks for the great walk through the larger, historical context. I am continually awed by how there are no coincidences, even in the crafting of the text. The Lord wants us to understand. One of His great graces. Thanks for your great instruction, brother. And Lord willing, one of these days I am going to get to a 1517 conference. God's peace.

Chad, I'm hoping you may have some insight for me on the situation that I am currently in, and that I have been in for some time now. I am not a Lutheran, but I find Lutherans objectively expositing the bible better than any other protestant denomination I've come across in my 32 yrs. I do have some reservations as a credo-bapist with no Catholic ties, so I'm not there on some of the doctrines and points of emphasis that seem to be center points in the Lutheran doctrine. But my question is this, do you know of any pastors/churches in the DFW that stick to orthodox/historic teaching (denomination doesn't matter)? I'm having trouble finding a church home for my small family, and thought that maybe you had a friend or fellow pastor you know here in Fort Worth or the broader DFW that would suit my brief description for doctrinal pairing. The people I glean the most from, and affirm their teaching, would be you guys at 1517 (you, Jason, Dr. Rod), and the Theocast guys. You're an awesome teacher and I would trust your judgement if you had somewhere relatively close to Fort Worth that would fit the bill. Ps- Nightdriving is one of the sweetest things ever written by a Christian, thanks for the bravery and poetry of it. God bless you brother.

I’m sure there are many, but here’s a couple that come to mind: Lamb of God Lutheran in Flower Mound and Our Savior Lutheran in McKinney. I know and respect their pastors, and I’ve spoken at both churches.

Remember also that the Jews of that time thought of the Messiah as a purely Jewish figure, who would raise an army, expel the Romans, and re-establish Solomon's Kingdom in all of its glory. The disciples made this mistake too, which is why they could never quite accept Jesus' telling them of His impending death and resurrection.
