The Lisbon Lions is the nickname given to the Celtic team that won the European Cup at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon, Portugal on 25 May 1967, defeating Inter Milan, Scotland. Celtic's style was the antithesis of the cynical, but highly effective, defensive style of Inter.
Celtic were the first club from the British island to win the European Cup, and still the only Scottish club ever to have reached the final. Celtic are one of only two clubs (along with FC Barcelona of Spain) to have won a "Quadruple". They reached the final again in 1970 but were beaten 2--1 by Feyenoord after extra time in the San Siro Stadium in Milan.

I was 12 and watched with dad a Rangers fan , he jumped over the table when Celtic took the lead he really was a Celt that day because he was a true Scot.

Scotland will never see a team quite like the Lisbon lions & big jock guiding us to glory I was a baby when we won the European cup ( I was 21 month old) I'm a great believer that the great nights of old will return to Celtic park in European competition it's been a sad time at Celtic park in the last cpl of weeks with the passing of both big Billy & Stevie so let's finish the season off with a treble treble in memory of these 2 Celtic legends RIP Billy & Stevie YNWA HH

I will always have tremendous respect for Celtic FC. It's a shame the Scottish teams didn't join the Premiership, Celtic & Rangers would've been leagues ahead of both United & Liverpool by now.

Oh for godsake yes look at the players the bottom half of the EPL sign so could you imagine the players we could attract to Celtic park if we played in the EPL my god we'd be a force not just in Britain but also in Europe those who say we'd struggle have no idea what pish they're talking I say 5 years we'd be knocking on the door of winning it I've no doubt about that maybe that's why we've not been invited to join I also think within the next 20 years there will be a major shake_up in football in Britain and Celtic will 1 day be playing against such clubs as Liverpool/ Man City ect ect every week I might not see it in my lifetime ( I'm 54)but it'll happen 1 day hail hail

It is extraordinary how relatively few times the Lisbon Lions were capped. I wonder why! LOL
They were exceptional players, however Scottish football had a far stronger pool of talent at this time only 4 of the lions were in the Wembley Wizards

The lack of Scotland caps for these legends is a national disgrace. Sure, we had a much better choice of player back then, but still it is shocking how few caps were won compared to their club honours & how long they played at the very top of the game.

O my dear God I am so glad I was alive for moments like this AND 2 rugby grand slams...sometimes it is pure ecstasy being Scottish ....
I grew up watching the Lisbon Lions ( those eleven actually played only a handful of games in full , including the EC win ) . My favourite player at the time was Joe McBride , the man Jimmy McGrory said was the best Celtic striker he had seen . But for a bad injury McBride would most probably been part of the Lisbon line-up as he had played in the earlier rounds . As it was , Willie Wallace did a fine job as his replacement . Scotland produced three great teams in the 1960s imo : the Rangers and Dundee teams of the early 60s and of course the Lisbon Lions , the best of them all . But hey , I'm totally and unashamedly biased .

This is what it is to be Celtic, Sad as time goes on and so many of the lions passing but thats life eh but hey what memories, even 54yrs on to say we were the first British club to lift the European cup swells all Celtic hearts with pride, that can never be topped. HH
You can talk of all the achievements of your Madrids your Barcelonas your bayern Munichs ect ect but none of them have as much pride in their teams as we celtic supporters do with these bhoys what they done in Lisbon will never be seen again a team of home grown bhoys not a bloody foreigner in sight that is 1 of the reasons what makes Glasgow Celtic a club like no other is this the greatest team ever put together in Scotland....
