The Black Experience Japan I am a black American and consider myself a fairly worldly traveler, and have lived abroad. I recently discovered your channel, and am a BIG fan of what you’re doing. Thank you for contributing to the documentation of the “black experience”. Keep up the good work!
@@teetee4152 ...certain places I wouldn't even visit...let alone live. It's certain places in the states I wouldn't visit, the hell I'm going abroad to experience prejudice for?
@@teetee4152 yeah I used to be in the military and even though we all worked together when we were chilling we all gravitated to our own because regardless if people get too comfortable with you or get around they own race they'll cross that line...any of them will do it when it's a lot of them and a few of us.
Patrice- exactly. Our people have done all this work creating music, doing free labor, inventing man things and we get no love from any of that. The validation needs to stop from our people. We need to build our own.
Go wherever you want to go, there will be bad and good experiences no matter where you are but you no what? You going there is going to write a new Narrative of "black people", and you'll grow as a person. Don't hide in your house and go tell the world you are there!
For someone who lived here for nearly 9 years it's not as bad as you might perceive. Ofcourse racism exist but not much more than in any other country. Mostly koreans are more ignorant than racists and are willing to learn.
I’m Korean and watching this video made me really sad and upset that this beautiful man was and maybe still is getting treated bad just because he has a darker skin than most of them. I will share this video to educate some of them.
Hell, many white people in Asian countries know most of the people will smile in their faces and kiss their asses. Some of the ugliest white men go there to get laid by an Asian woman and think they are kings there.
What if there was a *Taekwondo school* (a Korean martial art) in Los Angeles with majority black American students and a black American manager. Then a Korean student wants to join the school. Can you imagine the manager/master saying, "Sorry. No Korean students allowed."??? It would be deemed as racist, etc. There would be an uproar.
@Leopold - I don't do martial arts these days, so I have no desire to open a martial arts school. Also, NOT ALL Asians hate blacks. I live in Japan now and the people generally treat me fairly and respectfully.
Well think about it, in America we have history of people against black people so now it's frowned upon. Also, people would drag that place to the ground but in Korea there is no history there. They aren't able to have a connection with black people because of the ratio of foreigners and black foreigners that go to Korea. So the only reference that they have of black people would be media and bad media. If there were a higher rate of black people there it wouldn't be like that but that their view on us, and to say that it's wrong is not my place to say because what one country think is wrong, it can be accepted in another
Thank you for continuing to shine light on these issues! I also recommend Korean subtitles. You'll have more Korean viewers this way. I also show your videos to my husband since he's Korean and he's becoming aware of these social aspects as well. I think the more awareness we give to Koreans maybe some change will happen in the future.
@Black To Grace You can’t separate blacks from their music, because it comes from their soul! It is something that no other nation on Earth can ever understand unless they’ve endured the type of brutal slavery experience that their ancestors have endured! It’s more than music for them, it is a force that was birthed out of the White man’s crushing their ancestors. It is the sound of the whip cracking on their forefathers, foremothers back, the cry of agony that crushes the soul when watching their loved one raped, sold and hanged for entertainment!!! The tears of the blood of slaves that the almighty God collected and kept in a bottle, for vengeance to be released one day soon on the partakers of the wickedness of slavery! Must I continue? So next time, before you condemn a people whom you don’t understand their journey, you better get the facts straight, lest you bring judgement upon your self!
@Black To Grace So you adore someone's culture but you don't like their "race" and thus you're discriminatory against them while also appropriating/capitalizing off of their culture.... To use your example: Let's say I set up a classical piano festival twice a year...but I ban all German, Russian and Polish people (and white people in general) from attending turning them away at the door because, well, I simply don't like white people. Still, at my festival, we have pianists playing Rachmaninoff, Bach and the like. Do you know how many white people would lose their minds over this kind of logic (or the lack thereof)? Perhaps it isn't confusing, but let's call a spade a spade: it's not about liking someone or disliking someone. It's utter disrespect to the creators and innovators of that cultural artifact. It's blatant cultural appropriation.
Travel 4k if you look at the world for what it is, you’ll see that many countries accept black culture but not black people. I agree with that to an extent, but it’s not a matter of black people being emotional and stupid. The commercialization of black culture and music has caused people to misconstrue what beauty black people have brought to this world in art, literature, sports, and even architecture. yet people still despise us as human beings. Anti-black/POC racism is apparent across the world because of the global standard of Eurocentricity that has been established since the exposure of Africans to the rest of the world. Your ignorance of those contributions is why you think black people take pride in being emotional and stupid. Be safe ✊🏿
There is nothing wrong with being a rapper or musician. If we were to bring other talents to the forefront they would still find a way to appropriate our gifts.
@i hate gays You're a ignorant jackass that spews hate every where on RUclips. Go somewhere and learn how to be a better human being, with your stupid stereotypical list. Yours is way longer, bunch of mass murdering psychotic fools! Point! Blank! Period!

@i hate gays like Korean men and women don't give up their progeny. They don't look out for their elderly and the job market is not really all that great and Koreans and a lot of other Asians want to look western. Alcoholism is a problem and they don't take care of their children either. So who are you trying to judge?
We forget that black people had to fight like hell to be able to sit at a restaurant in our own country let alone a foreign country. Jazz clubs had all black jazz bands but would not allow black patrons. I still feel excluded from spaces in America now for being black. I commend him for being such a go-getter , for bridging the divide and creating his own events. I hope it doesn't discourage anyone who wants to travel because I believe the good outweighs the bad. Thanks for informing people that this is what could possibly happen so people are prepared for it. We need to build understanding, educate, better monetize and protect our cultural outputs so that we benefit from them, and not be discouraged by these things. I believe we will be successful without a doubt because of our talent and ingenuity that no other people can reproduce.
@@thegreatonecometh200 We really don't have anything to prove to anyone. If they can't see our humanity that is their problem that they have to resolve. I think I’m going to pass on visiting korea i don’t understand what have we done to them to make them feel a certain way about us they dont even know us.😓
Well, we've been passive and let other people write our narratives. Now we better tell the world we are there and nothing will draw us back. So travel wherever you want (safe of course 😅), go have your OWN experiences and write YOUR narrative!
@@TheMemane I understand what you are saying, but if you go into a country where you are barely tolerated. Then you are putting yourself in a position to be passive. Korea is not America, if you decide to give the club owners a piece of your mind, then you will get your one way ticket out of Korea.
Its probably because they hear about what the gangster/ghetto blacks do. they are probably suspicious of us because of the ones making us look bad. Plus it doesn't help that blacks are often portrayed as the thuggish type in a lot of movies and rap music. Its not a reason to not visit though. The only way they will change their mind is prove them wrong. Operate with good Character, and integrity. Then we will end their perception. There is also the nigerian mafia that runs strip clubs in Japan, and perhaps because Africa doesnt have a good rep. So then they generalize.
Not only to us. Even to their people. The continent as a whole don't like dark skin. I am in Thailand and my thai friend told me that being dark in complexion is an insult that why skin bleaching is very high in the continent. There are some kids their parents will start to give them pills when they noticed their children are dark. I was so shocked when i heard that. On daily basis i faced open discrimation and insult because i am a black woman. When in Africa i used to watch videos on our brothers and sisters being treated poorly in other countries i never understood how painful it was until i left the motherland. We have no friend in this world. I always wonder why
Most of us are Christ centered and demonic activity hates Christ like ppl....it's a beautiful thing that we endure and are able to embody respect....at the end of the day that makes us strong as the Bible says the race is not for the swift but whom can endure
So true. I'm American, and I have never been to Africa or a place majority black but I'm very confident that any country in Africa or in the Caribbean would ever tree foreigners like this
Being so accepting will always be our demise. We should start treating people the way they treat us. Then maybe we will get the respect that we deserve.....
Here is part of the reason for this behavior as told to me by older women in Korea and others. During the Korean war when Black men first started going to Korea, very attractive Korean women were dating them and marrying them and it was viewed as a "problem" by many White soldiers. So they spread negative stories to the older generation of Koreans to prevent these women from dating and marrying Black men. These stories were later "confirmed" by what people saw in films, shows and in music. The optics showed that Black people were horrible and this was viewed as truth. As for men in the club, some men feel that a Korean woman who has sex with a Black man shouldn't be "allowed" to date a Korean man because she has been defiled. There's a bunch more I can say about this, and that I have had rejected as racist by some people, but I'll save the rest for later.
I've talked to several white and hispanic women who have kids by black men, and they have stated that on many occasions some white and hispanic men would stop talking to them when they find out they've been with a black man. So it's all over with other races also. The disparaging of black men during war goes back to around WWI and was in full effect by WWII, My father talked to some black WWII vets, one told him that some of the people would come up to them and raise up their jackets in the back. They were told blacks have tails (by whites), the brothers told them "We do have tails, it's in the front" lmao. Back in 2007 I worked with a brother who went to Japan I believe and he said a kid kept touching his butt and laughing, so he was like "WTF" and then he was told that the kid was trying to see if he had a tail. smh.
@@complexblackness Korea is the same way. There was a Black teacher in a Facebook group who said that one of her students was sad because she felt that people would try to harm the teacher because Black people grow tails at night. It's a sad a scary thing how media is used because of jealousy.
@Travel 4k You are right about looks. Lighter skin was associated with wealth and royalty since those people stayed indoors a lot and had pale skin, where as poorer people had darker skin and were viewed as less attractive. However, one cannot deny that the things that have been said about Black people, on top of what the media shows does play a role in all of this. No one is forced to be a bigot, and many younger Koreans want more Black people to move to Korea so that the older generation can see they were lied to. But when your mind is shaped by certain people in a certain way, you can be guided towards bigotry real easily.
@Travel 4k The original Koreans were black a few centuries back! I guess they are so insecure to the point of considering their forefathers and mothers ugly and unattractive. They’ve worked so hard, like the Dominican Republic, at becoming pale faces, so dark complexion scares them to death! It’s a sickness!!!

I was a little surprised he did not recommend me to any dance clubs, when I was staying in Hongdae, where a lot of University students, and people my age gather, and I am East Asian, from the Islands, and U.S. This really surprised me how some South Koreans don't like blacks, and even other South Koreans, and other East Asians from the U.S., and other countries! This is wierd, that some South Koreans are so prejudice towards other Koreans who are dark-skinned from the U.S., and Pacific Islands, and blacks from the U.S., and other East Asians like Japanese who has helped South Korea, economically in many ways!
@@abdijama5340 that's quite an unfair assessment. You don't know this person or their valued so why say that. I don't mind anyone wanting adventure but if they really want to help someone got to Africa and teach. They would have a ball over there especially since they are into rap culture. The real reason that they act funny towards them is those young Korean women will get curious and want to know if its true lol. Basically the same problem the white man had.

I’d visit the Asian continent for a short stay...and mostly South Asia. Aside from that, there is no way in the world I’d ever live there, especially East Asia. I’m sure there are lovely people there but there’s something about them that I’m not feeling at all. They seem to use being sheltered as a way to judge and frown on others. We are connected by technology and books are worldwide. There’s really no excuse for that much ignorance.
The experiences of blacks in North Korea is more positive than Southern Korea, who still appears to be living in the Stone Age! I commend this young man for exploring their country. How will you know if you don’t take a chance to visit? Next time, black people worldwide should think twice about spending their money with these types of hypocritical haters!
I lived in Korea for awhile and his experience with the club is very very common. I will say though clubs will deny whites as well especially if they think they are US Military. Overall dark skin isnt looked upon highly in Korea though and if you want wide spread acceptance you might wanna find another country. That's just my experience
The clubs in Korea are very discriminatory and not just against black people. I’ve had other Asian friends non Korean and they didn’t let them in either.
I would feel better about a club that doesn’t accept FOREIGNERS than a club that doesn’t accept BLACKS. I totally understand why they wouldn’t let FOREIGNERS in.
@Black To Grace he said American trap music. The only trap artist that are main stream in America are black people. Most likey the club was playing trap music rapped by an black artist. It makes zero since to play a black mans music while simultaneously discriminating against one.
Black To Grace Nah, that’s not going to fly. There is not a ethnic group of people in this world, young or old, that doesn’t associate rap music with Black American people and culture. I think I’ve been around enough to know.
Writing again from Poland- Another great interview. Abmins- but Black people take their butts to places where they do not want you there. Unfortunately, people see color; it is gross but it is true. Black people are spiritual and open to people and other groups are just not like that.
The sad thing is, getting "used to" it means you've accepted the mental stress and anxiety as normal. You are praised by others on the outside for your resiliency without realizing you're in the process of mastering how to cope with the mental trauma masquerading as an optimistic outlook on life.
Angelica Posey What you said speaks volumes. I agree with you 100%. If us as Black people as a whole had some damn pride in who we are, other groups take notice and would HATE IT, but to HELL with what they think we need to grow into the people we were meant to be UNAPOLOGETICALLY!

Mahn sometimes hearing this ish can be really ...discouraging? Saddening? I mean I'm used to this, hearing such stories, I know how the world views us dark skinned people but sometimes it just hits hard. I mean my home country has always been open to people who look different to them and welcome them. Like no matter how many movies I've seen where people of other countries and ethnicities are portrayed as bad, even when based on true historical events, I have never considered that a reason to look down or mistreat. Like I'm always excited to meet people of different cultures even though they look different to me. I love that we are all different, it's so beautiful all the diversity. It's so disheartening that we are hated simply because we look different. But anyway I won't let this get me down, even it's just one person's mind I can change through my life, then I will keep loving and treating everyone with love even if it is not reciprocal. Hate will never change anyone's heart. Hate begets hate. Love is the only thing that changes people.

They have clubs in Japan and Korea saying no white men allowed so why is this some big deal. MLK never walked across a bridge in Asia. They have freedom to reserve right to deny service to anyone who they dont like. Only in USA they have forced integration. Bc we were once covering every land on the 🌎, even America & the Caribbean before Columbus came. Global racism is needed so blacks don't overpopulate the planet w other races.
We're such a resilient, powerful, smart and talented people. If we would show more love and respect toward one another across the globe, we would be able to build peaceful culturally and economically strong societies of our own that would render racism powerless against us. It's such a shame that we have to sometimes bear the indignity of it, even in our own countries (like instances I've heard about in Africa), because too many of us just can't comprehend this.
What you heard about Africa is bullshit propaganda, In the 60s Nixon had an agenda to keep continental Africans and African Americans Separate he didn’t want them to unify so that their divide and conquer tactics would prevail...and sadly some people still fall for this!
I enjoyed and learned from the conversation of this black man from America with the host he comes across as a nice guy, Koreans are missing out by not trying to get him his vibe is very pleasant
Club culture has always been about exclusivity. I've seen a club let in a famous foreigner and their entourage 1 weekend and a sign refusing foreigners go up at the same place the next weekend 🤨. Clubs play what's trendy and make their own rules as to who gets in. I've heard of some (not all) clubs in Japan and Korea excluding black people, Southeast Asians, white foreigners, "fat" people, "older" people, people with glasses, and definitely exclusions based on attire. In the States an establishment excluding you based on your race might be illegal, but that law isn't universal. Especially if you are not a citizen of that country or don't know the language fluently yet, demanding change can quickly be met with incarceration/deportation. I appreciate Andrew being able to keep it moving, stay positive, and take his money elsewhere. Tampa Bay 👊🏽 aye! Locals who want to vibe with foreigners go to clubs where we can get in and those places are worth it.

That's crazy, no black people allowed, but you're playing black music... in a club...that doesn't allow blacks? *confused*
@Black To Grace classical music is not white music by the way, just saying.
@Black To Grace
You can’t separate blacks from their music, because it comes from their soul!
Be safe ✊🏿

Very true
@Travel 4k
The original Koreans were black a few centuries back! I guess they are so insecure to the point of considering their forefathers and mothers ugly and unattractive.
What up Atwaters! What good Team!!!! Good to see you
Great interview! I really love the part where you were smiling ear to ear, when he mentioned Marcus Garvey. 34:05
FINALLY, a genuine interpretation of the racism in one of these countries! The brother spoke intelligently about it, wasn't emotional about it, and damn sure wasn't let it stop him from where he wants to go with his life! Bravo!!!
Amen!!
He will eventually leave, but grow and learn from this experience. The fact that he is teaching kids will leave a lasting impression on his students all of thier life. He is probably a genuinely nice guy too.
My own personal feelings and my own opinion I feel like some Koreans not all but a lot of them don't like black people they will never change you are in their country you have to abide by their rules it's not America when they say NO BLACKS ALLOW and then that owner will have no club because we don't do that shipppp here period
annmarie and he is going to a homogenous place. If he is there he can teach them things about Black people instead of trying to be liked.
@@PrettyGurl12361 that's what he's doing.... teaching..were in this video did he beg Koreans to like him? It sounds like when negative shit happened, he kept it moving
Idk I’ve been to Miami. Black people get kicked out of clubs there all the time.
@@PrettyGurl12361 True you're right
This interview is definitely different than the others. Very informative though.
Wow! They play black music in their clubs and we can't even go in?! That't messed up! 😡
You might as well stay in America if you gonna put up with that. I thought about tefl teaching abroad but I definitely won't be going there. It's not worth it in my opinion.
I'm old enough to remember the shift from edifying conscious music to destructive gangster music and I'd say, it's definitely deliberate and strategic tactics to control the narrative on the part of the record companies.
Had the same experiences living in Korea. Why I left and why I have zero desire to return.
This brotha can spit! I aspire to get to the level he's at when it comes to traveling...much respect
I love this guy. I love the energy and aura of the people featured in your videos. As a black American, I think you are accomplishing something amazing with this plant form.
But mostly, I hope that my fellow black people of the Diaspora are hearing and seeing how important representation is. That’s really the biggest take-away I get from these interviews. I know that we are MAD talented people who really do comprise the current global culture, but are we, as a collective, aware of how powerful controlling the promotion of our image is?
Young black people of the Diaspora- please focus HARD on taking the narrative of WHO we are into our control. Platforms like this make great strides in doing this.
But I respectfully ask and DEMAND that you do this. The whole world feeds off our culture and creations; DEMAND the respect and acknowledgment that we deserve.
Well said bru keep up the good work and stay positive.
Guessss what??!!! The night clubs that don't allow Blacks or foreigners is due to the bad behaviors of the American military. Read about it. The military boys go to foreign countries and cause a RUCKUS. That leaves a bad impression. But, remember he did find a job AND he has Korean friends. He chooses to be there for 5 years. If he didn't like it there, he would have left!!!! Who stays at a country for 5 years if it's sooo awful??
True
Did he say he didn't like it there..absolutely no, criticism doesn't mean hate but openly give your opinion so that the target of the critique can do things better
You would have a point if it were only black people in the military.
So you are okay with discrimination just because of a few military personnel? GTFOH
So the military only has black soldiers. 😒
Nice and informative interview. Good luck with your music young man👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
“In the states, that would not happen”
Wrong!!! Clubs still discriminate here. Especially against black women.
I was allowed into an establishment after they did a paper bag test, they said I was attractive enough to get in plus I had what they called, "snow bunnies," aka my friends were white. I told the girls to do them - they really were looking forward to clubbing there. I rejected the offer of free admission and a section... decided to fly solo. Had an amazing time, alone. I'm legally blind so I can't rate my attractiveness or talk about my skin tone, but discrimination based on physical attributes and racial profile still exist.
When a bouncer I know saw me in a club I was physically removed because I am a trans female, and he found it necessary to tell the guy I was with as well, it was a black club, shit happens everywhere.
BLACK NOMAD you have to be joking.
Travel 4k thank you being black has nothing to do being against someone religion or culture being black is not a sin
i wish they stop doing that shit tbh tho
I love watching your videos. I’m a Canadian-Jamaican teacher in Turkey and can relate to a lot of these experiences 👍🏾
What! No Blacks on the club that plays Hip Hop. They got to be kidding me. Well if they want to put it that way. South Korea should be seriously fined every time they play Hip hop music from us Black Americans. Period.
Their majority of K-pop artists mimic Black American musicians, the slangs, the dress, the dance moves and yet these bitches have the fecking audacity to deny a black guy entrance into their stinking club.
@@mrs_chin Yeah and the fact hip hop started in my hometown in the South Bronx back in the 70's. Go figure..
@Travel 4k Trust me I'm all action troll. But see trolls like you never show their face. Even I show mines.
Looks like it's even worse than China! Don't think even they have such a policy!(black guys are definitely welcome in hip hop clubs in China as they are seen as cool!)
@@eyeofthetiger6002 And Japan without a doubt.
Thank you so much for this video. Awesome!! I really admire this positive, intelligent young man and wish him the best in his life.
What the hell kind of nonsense is that not to allow a person in a club because there black and turn then turn around and sell there beauty products and hair for black women also listen to there music and not allowing them to go inside there club 😳😳😳😳😳😳
What kind of extreme hypocrisy is that 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
@kombucha! excuse me
That person made a mistake he or she is not a representative of our race🙄
I always see white people make these kind of grammatic mistakes but I don't say "white people come on🙄 it's this and that"
Correction!!! In the states this kind of stuff does happen the doorman just try to be slick about it or implement dress codes that are targeted toward "urban" /Black communities. Right in the United States Ive personally heard the no gold chains, no dread locks, no baggy clothes policies used toward Black individuals. The United States is NO Utopian society.
Such an amazing interview! Learned a lot about South Korea through his perspective 🙏🏽 I look forward to traveling to Asia when able.
Thank You for letting them know, had one guy in previous video comment section saying cause he get Korean girls its not true lol smh. It is known in K-Town a lot of the Korean clubs do not want black ppl in their clubs.
Pape-san?
Darkseid Na that wasn’t his name.
@@noir935 yes. He was small and non threatening looking with a colonized mindset.
Smart young man. Very well read and intelligent. He appreciates life and seems like he wants to convey to all people, that they shouldn't be led astray by hear-say and plain lies about people. Get to know people of different cultures for yourself. He's the type of person that is continually trying to define himself in a positive light. I really admire him. He's handsome and looks like he's a neat freak. (A perfectionist) Ranzo is a wonderful interviewer. Keep 'em comin....
So much truth in this(lived there for a year as a personal trainer). They love and take our culture, but they don't love "us".
They have clubs in Japan and Korea saying no white men allowed so why is this some big deal. MLK never walked across a bridge in Asia. They have freedom to reserve right to deny service to anyone who they dont like. Only in USA they have forced integration. You could start a club in a foreign country saying no whites or asians or indians allowed, just let dogs and cats inside sipping warm milk from shallow dishes, until black customers show up and say "Hey, where all the white and asian women be at? Why all the animals laying around burping up milk ?" What kind of racist bar is this? Black only bar? Brother you gonna drive me to drink.
Those clubs will even tell you no sneakers and you will see a Korean person rocking Balenciaga entering lol. The worst I’ve seen is depending on the shade of skin tone, like I was allowed into a club an my friend who’s really dark they told no they are full smh.
I really enjoyed the interview with Andrew and loved his honesty.
How is it that we blacks literally have hate from every corner of this god forsaken world??
Kevin Wilson
.....It is called WST anti black propaganda (they who control the media controlled black peoples image which intentionally show blacks in a negative light to the 🌍) However, things are changing through black media via social media✨
Bc we were once covering every land on the 🌎, even America & the Caribbean before Columbus came. Global racism is needed so blacks don't overpopulate the planet w other races.
Excellent as usual mi boss!
What you heard about Africa is bullshit propaganda, In the 60s
Nixon had an agenda to keep continental Africans and African Americans
Separate he didn’t want them to unify so that their divide and conquer tactics would prevail...and sadly some people still fall for this!
I enjoyed and learned from the conversation of this black man from America with the host he comes across as a nice guy, Koreans are missing out by not trying to get him his vibe is very pleasant
The no foreigns allowed is a common thing. Not just blacks. I heard of restaurants like that in Japan.
Majin MJ the channel is about being black in Asia tho...
Great episode!! Keep up the great content!👏🏾👏🏾
Tampa Bay has the most chill dudes!
I like your unfiltered honesty. I am a nobody who wants to visit certain countries and i like doing my homework before i travel to a palce.
I'm a Japanese man 🇯🇵
I love Black Americans , their culture and the USA!🇺🇸❤️🇯🇵
Trust me You Japanese are the best Asians. We already know guys love us Blacks! You're good!
They love everything we do..... Envy turns into hate... I'm so proud to have black skin
👍one like from Brazil
I personally don't have that many issues while in Korea, however I don't go to clubs. I do go to bars. I have yet to have a problem there and be told my color was an issue. I have always been welcomed with a smile. I'm not sure if my knowledge of the Korean language is helpful, or because I'm very social, but I tend to talk to the people very easily. I always have an amazing time in my visits. Not saying shit don't happen, I just don't allow negative around me
i love that marcus garvey reference
Sun was spittin fire at the end 👌🏾🔥🔥
