Podcast: Should Christian Women Endure Abuse?-A Response

  • Should a woman endure abuse by an unbelieving spouse like a missionary endures persecution?
Shockingly, this is the advice offered by Dr. John Street, chair of the graduate program of biblical counseling at John MacArthur’s school - The Master's University and Seminary - and an elder at Grace Community Church.
Street also suggests that wife’s failure to “fulfill” her husband can cause the husband to sexually abuse his children! And he says victims should report their abuse to church leaders first, and to police as a last resort.
In this podcast, host Julie Roys is joined by Dr. Philip Monroe, a licensed psychologist and director of the Global Trauma Recovery Institute at Missio Seminary in Philadelphia, who responds to numerous clips of Street's stunning views on abuse and abuse victims.

The good news is that Jesus came to free all, to make a new creation: to make us 'sons' of God: we're now a kingdom of priests, not male nor female, not Gentiles nor Jews. No restrictions. This is important, because it tells us that marriage is a good thing. “Husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. . . . Let each one of you . . . so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband” (Ephesians 5:28, 33). These men would all call the police or an ambulance if a church member or unbeliever attacked them with a baseball bat. Even though God could heal you, that doesn't mean that he will. Also, nobody alive today has the ability to heal in the same way as the Apostles. In regards to speaking in tongues, they were not speaking gibberish like you see in charismatic churches today. Instead, they spoke other languages that were previously unknown to them in order to spread the gospel to others.

This wifebeating childraper posing as a good church man was the problem, they kept the wolf in the church and excommunicated the sheep.

Notice how Dr Street came across as sympathetic toward the abused husband example, but came across as unsympathetic toward the abused wife situation.
Double standards at its worse. So what have Christian women learned from watching Dr Street - and men for that matter? Here goes....
    1. When you, as a woman, marry a Christian or unbelieving man, you are accepting that they deserve a scapegoat who they can dump on.
    2. As a married woman your role is to put up and shut up, not complain. No husband, even an abusive one, deserves an unsubmissive wife or even one that complains. Nagging from you is a lot worse than being beaten black and blue and possibly hospitalised from him. Remember that!
    3. Your husband deserves a perfect wife who is dutiful at all times in bed and out, even if he reneges on his responsibilities totally. After all, if he has - he's not a douchbag, layabout or bad husband at all, he just made a poor choice of wife and its your fault 100%. So its up to you to make him into a good husband.
    4. If your husband does renege on his responsibilities you should be quiet, still and uncomplaining to win him over - even if this has been going on 30 years and you're emotionally dead inside trying to kill the pain of having your soul ripped out by this man. I'm sure he will change in the 31st year.....or maybe the 32nd.....or perhaps...
    5. If you leave, you are being a bad wife, even if your husband knocked ten bells out of you last night - and in front of the children - and you are dizzy from concussion with bruises all over your body.
    6. Children learn to be good Christians hearing their father verbally and emotionally and physically abusing their mother. Ater all, how else are they going to be good parents themselves - watching their parents respect and love each other and enjoying each other's company and showing patience, understanding and empathy and dealing with disagreements responsibily and maturally? Are you kidding me? Don't be silly now. That would be emotionally damaging wouldn't it. er....
    7. On his birthday, don't forget to treat him to his favourite film: The Stepford Wives. That way you can both enjoying watching the men and the robot women acting out the perfect Christian couple.
Meanwhile, Todd Friel and other Calvanist pastors will uphold this idea that women and men in marriage are of equal value even if they have different roles. Could someone please tell me what it takes for the woman to be seen as lesser value then? When she is dead, perhaps?
This whacko counsellor is a sadistic psycho and so are all of those other nutters at GCC who support this utter cobblers. By condoning spousal abuse and blaming wives for their husbands sexually abusing their children due to lack of sex, he is showing a total lack of empathy, and is inciting criminal behaviour. Both of these are characteristics of psychopathy. He deserves to be carted off in a straight jacket and slammed in a ward and looked after by Nurse Ratchet. The only use he has for the Bible is to pick it up and whack his wife over the head with it, which he probably does every day.
I don't think I've been so angry watching a You Tube video. Not only is this whacko dishonouring to God and all of his creation made in his image- all of humankind who he created to multiply and to advance their own cultures and societies - without losing site of what is Godly (which is what they did and do, of course, as we / they all fall short of perfection - this mysogynistic approach to life in a bubble (to be away from the world entirely) seems to stem from all of this toxic Total Depravity nonsense that Calvinists go in for. Why original sin isn't good enough to describe those in Adam, I'll never know. Being dead in your sins doesn't mean you can't make rational decisions and hear the gospel, but they seem to think differently. But one thing I do know is that inheriting original sin is only meant to explain why people resist hearing the Gospel and giving their life to the Lord and why they can never be perfect without the sanctifying hand of God. But with these hard line Calvinists it means more: justification to deny any usefulness and value in human advancements from the pit of Adam. With that goes the usefulness of any therapeutic methods that sit within the secular realm too, just because secular counsellors don't consult the Bible for solutions. I suppose they see them as....er...depraved. Yep, that's it. They see it all as depraved - totally. Plus they see the human physical body - hers, especially (but not his nearly so much) as part of that sinful carcas that has yet to be washed of sin (Rom.7) But there is a problem there. Do they look in the Bible to find answers to how to fix the car, how to mend the washing machine, how to buy groceries too? No. If not, why should anyone not look outside the church and to seek help from licensed professional marriage counsellers too? I fail to see the difference between seeing a marriage mechanic and a car mechanic. They fail to see the logical inconsistencies in their approaches to understanding society and what it can offer.
The saddest thing about this video is GCC's refusal to recognise, let alone acknowledge the sheer double standards to which they advise couples goinig through marital difficulties. Meanwhile, many people are put off coming to The Lord, or if they do won't attend Church. With people like this, on board, that is hardly surprising but it is very sad.

An interesting theological note here: As Calvinists, they believe it is God who ultimately chooses someone to be saved. Salvation is 100% God’s doing lest any man should boost. So the million dollar question for a spouse in an abusive marriage is, “What if my husband (or wife) is not part of the Elect?” Under Calvinism, there is no such thing as “winning someone to righteousness” because if God didn’t choose that person, it’s a done deal. There is nothing the spouse can do to persuade them to the faith. So they are essentially telling abused spouses to endure severe abuse for a lifetime.

Precisely. They can't circle that square...they shout, "SQUIRREL!!!"
      And divert everyone's attention.
      Or they call us names...
Either way, they speak out of both sides of their mouths. One minute they say we can't come to Jesus unless he determines it and calls us and the next minute they tell an abused wife to stay in the home to lead her unsaved husband to Christ. Which one is it, Lordship Salvation or not?

They believe in what they call Compatibilism. They get around that argument by stating that God is in control of all we do, and our salvation too but we also have a choice to reject God and to pay with his wrath and be condemned.
How do you square that circle? How can God pre-determine what will be and be in control but we are free to choose as well. It seems to make no sense.
Answer you don't. Compatibilism is just a word that describes what is to most people a logical inconsistency. In reality, compatibilism either can't happen at all, or it means something else entirely. I think the answer lies in why Calvinist pastors preach at all - after all, they know their own theology well enough, we assume. They clearly expect audiences to respond to what they say - even though they speak to 'the elect' who don't need prompting or convicting from them, or they speak to the non-elect who would not benefit from hearing anything they do have to say of The Lord. In either instance they seem totally redundant.
So what can all this mean.
I haven't read The Institutes...but it seems to me that the obstacle in this logical inconsistency is 'the corridor of time.' Take that out of the equation and you have a Cosmic God who came to earth as Jesus, who is also God and who rose as the Holy Spirit - as God within us - in those believers he leaves behind. To reconcile the trinity, in relation to this question, that can only mean (at least to me) that God is omnipresent. That means that when he chose the elect before we were born, he could foresee who would choose to come to him when we were alive on earth, and who would not but that they would not know themselves if they were saved until they heard the word and were convicted of their sin. Some would follow him, some would choose not to follow him. Those who did are God's elect, those who didn't are the rejected ones. It is just Calvinists way of reconciling God as sovereign but acknowledging that with us mortals, trapped within the confines of a time corridor (a history, present and future, which doesn't affect God at all), we choose when we come to the Lord, if we come at all. So it is our choice, in essence, but still not out of God's control who knew what we would do anyway.
      Does that make sense?
It is best not to understand 'the elect' in the same way as we would understand it in secular society. Pre-determination, to us, means before, not now or in the future. To God it just means that what is now, was before and is in future. It is all the same thing - to God. There is no past, present and future - except for that short time that Jesus roamed the earth when he came to us as human-flesh and God together and experienced our suffering with us before suffering himself on the cross.
Once you remove the corridors of time out of the equation to explain compatibilism, it also makes sense for Calvinist pastors to preach. Bingo - now compatibilism is what to us reconciles our choice to know The Lord with God's pre-determined plan for our lives.

Also with regard to the “body”. Our body’s 1 Corinthians 6:20 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; ou were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
So these men and these “pastors” “elders and counsellor” telling a woman to stay are in fact:
    1. The man is abusing the temple of God that houses the Holy Spirit at the hands of someone who by all rights, I doubt is saved. Cause he would never lay a hand on his wife who has the Holy spirit within
    2. This “men of God” are also allowing Gods housing of the Holy Spirit to stay and be abused. And tell them it’s okay. When God would never say. This is okay.
Seems the world shows abuse victims more justice then these “churches” do.

The fact that this teaching is even getting away with claiming to have anything to do with Jesus is hideous. It's also interesting that he goes on and on with the missionary comparison, completely skipping over the fact that, if anyone is to suffer for the other, it would be the man since men are clearly instructed in Ephesians 5 to lay down their lives for the wife as Christ laid down his. I wish people would stop equating biblical passages about settling disputes out of court with "secular authorities." Roman magistrates, were not secular, they were pagan; corruption was common, and as shown in multiple places in the Bible (ex. Jesus before Pilate, Paul and Silas in Philippi), they were not above doling out punishments to non-citizens who hadn't been tried or found guilty of wrongdoing if they thought it would help keep the peace.
The context to which Jesus was speaking was more akin to that of Blacks in the Jim Crow South: There was no point in getting the civil authorities involved in disputes because if they didn't just ignore you, you wouldn't get justice, because your life and well-being was low on their list of priorities.

There is a very subtle thing going on with the GCC leadership. If you pay close attention, you will see there is a crafting of an approach mixed with technically accurate preaching. The technically accurate preaching is ending up being a mask behind which dark things are hiding. The greatest test of Scripture as to the quality of church leadership is the afflictions of Christ. Where are the afflictions of Christ in men who enjoy high standards of living or become outright wealthy (like JM) from ministry money?
In Col 1 : 24 Paul says that he rejoices in his sufferings for the Colossians and "fill up in my flesh what is LACKING in the afflictions of Christ". What a telling verse. I'm astounded that church in America today can't see that they are to hold up any preacher/minister to the gold standard given in the Apostle Paul. It speaks of men who have seized control of a microphone which they have then parlayed into controlling how people think.

Is Jesus wrong to save in body? My sister was advised to stay with her abusive husband for 20 years, and she did. She carried her shame into her 2nd marriage which was with an abusive man. She is now having to change her thinking (with pain comes wisdom) and divorce her 2nd husband due to his addictions, infidelity, physical/emotional/spiritual abuse. No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.
This truth will free you to seek for the Living God in the Spirit and to truly KNOW GOD instead of just knowing ABOUT HIM.
The GOSPEL is NOT written with ink, nor on tablets of stone, but on our hearts by the Spirit of the Living God.
The gentiles who have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, then they are a law unto themselves.
Under the New Covenant we are to be led by the Holy Spirit, not the bible.
I was searching for truth when Jesus told me, "The bible is an idol" which completely changed my direction. After that I only sought for Him in the Spirit and He has taught me many things on life's journey.
The most important of which is that He died so we could be regenerated by the Holy Spirit into sons and daughters of God.
The gospel is simple, repent from living after the flesh, ask Jesus to fill you with the Holy Spirit and then be led and controlled by Him through the Spirit.
The bible is only history and has absolutely no authority from God to control us, the outward law was under the old covenant. Jesus died to redeem us from the curse of the written law because we were unable to keep it.
Have a great journey through life with the Living Christ guiding you.
When Jesus words are written down and Satan is using them, then the bible becomes the word of Satan.
Constantine (1st) beast compiled 50 bibles, legalized Christianity and set up the false prophet (pope).
King James (2nd) beast, born 6/1566, 6th of Scotland, authorized a bible in 1611 that now has 66 books to control people with, an image of God's word they make to speak (the bible says).
By having faith in the bible which has been made into an idol, they break the new covenant of having faith in the Living Christ through the Holy Spirit, who is the true word of God.

( Do Christians And Jews and "OTHER" non-Muslims go to Heaven? )
    Quran 2:62
'' Those who believe (in the Quran) and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures) and the Christians and the Sabians->ANYAllah< Is The Protector Of Monasteries, Churches, Synagogues And The Mosques )
    Quran 22:40
[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, " Our Lord is God " And were it not that God checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of God is much mentioned. And God will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, God is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
Note: Why did Allah protected Churches and Synagogues if they worship false Allah ?
( Why Are There So Many Different Religions In The World ? )
    Quran 5 48
''...... If God wanted He could have made all of you a single nation.( ie single religion ) But He willed otherwise in order to test you in what He has given you (ie Scriptures) therefore try to excel one another in good deeds. Ultimately you all shall return to God then He will show you the truth of those matters in which you '' >DISPUTE verb < not noun like other religions
    Islam mean "submission" to God
( The above verse saying is that God will not accept a religion from the >MUSLIM< and the Non-Muslims but total "submission" to God )
Question: How Can Muslim And the Non-Muslim "submit" to the God?
Answer: Be kind to other human beings and Do not lie, Do not steal, Do not cheat, Do not hurt others, Do not be prideful and Do the charity work.
Note: If you obeyed all the ABOVE Allah-God's moral laws "YOU" submitted to God.( ie Islam mean "submission" to God )
The only people who will enter Paradise those who '' Submitted to God '' ( ie by good deeds )
God does NOT accept your religion of birth but only ''Your Total'' Submission to Him.
( God Allows Interfaith Marriages And Eat Food From the Christian And Jew And Vice Versa )
    Quran 5:5
''This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture (ie Christian and Jew) is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers (ie Muslim ) and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture (ie Christian and Jew) before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless and he in the Hereafter will be among the losers.''
Note: > Only < Islam allows interfaith marriages (>14 hundredsSame God< but They are >ALL Corrupt< more or less, some more than others from their original foundational teaching. The older religion are MORE corrupted than newer religion.
    Question to Muslim and Christian:
Does God / Allah only answer your pray ?
And God / Allah does not answer non Muslim / non Christian pray?
Did Allah '' Canceled '' all other religions Judaism and Christianity?
    Quran 5:48
'' And We have revealed to you [O Muhammad] the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture ( ie New and old Testament ) and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. >>>TO EACH OF YOU WE PRESCRIBED A LAW AND A METHODone nation>differ qualified < for to enter Paradise )
On the day of judgement God will ''NOT'' judge humanity bases on Sunni Muslim sect VS Shia Muslim sect ''NOR'' by Muslim VS non-Muslim >but< Doer of Goods VS Doer of Evils.
'' YOUR " birth in the Muslim's family is NOT a > qualification < for to enter the Paradise.
'' YOUR " religion / sect / foot long beard is NOT a > qualification < for to enter the Paradise.
The > qualification < to enter Paradise is > Faith in God and Good Work
