  • Original 16mm movie film taken by a New York City family while visiting Hawaii, Honolulu and Oahu in 1928. Scenic views include a biplane greeting while waiting to enter Honolulu Harbor, city views, hula dancing, paniolas, etc. The ship listing at the beginning of the film is curious. (At :55). Does anyone have an explanation for that? Can anyone identify the biplane or pilot? Please submit any information relevant to the film. This film is making its world wide debut here on the Youtenna Channel. Background music from the public domain courtesy of PublicDomain4U dot com, including Cliff Edwards, "A Song of Old Hawaii" - Andy Iona and his Islanders, "Naughty Hula Eyes" - and Billy Murray, "When Old Bill Bailey Plays the Ukulele."

AMAZING BEAUTIFUL PRESENTATION OF THE HULA BY A HULA FAMILY OF OLD HAWAII...THE TRADTIONS OF OUR KŪPUNA AS THE SAW BEST TO PERPETUATE THEM THAT ALLOWS OUR HULA TRADTION TO LIVE WITHIN US TODAY. KUPUNA IS WEARING HIS BEST SUIT FOR THIS PERFORMANCE...A GOOD INDICATION OF HOW HE VALUES THE OLD HULA TRADTIONS AND HOW HE HELD THEM IN GREAT ESTEEM. I CAN SEE AND NAME EACH TRADITIONAL STEP PERFORMED BY THE HULA DANCER...HULA MAY HAVE CHANGED BUT THE SEASONED EYES OF THE MASTER TEACHERS CAN SEE THE FOUNDATION OF HULA IN THIS BEAUTIFUL PRESENTATION...

I was born in Tripler 21 years after this movie was taken and lived on Ohau for the first 9 years of my life. Sadly that Hawaii does not exist any longer. Sadly Hawaii now often reminds me of Newark NJ with palm trees it is so damn crowded.............

As the daughter of a hula dancer from the 1930's and a hula student myself, I recognize some of the standard hula footwork like "uwehe", lele uwehe, and a couple of others.
The style is definitely older and out of date, and the hand motions didn't look too authentic, but my mom who was very well trained danced very similarly.
