Story Of Rameshwar Jyotirlinga Temple - Twelve Jyotirlinga Of Shiva
This temple is the southernmost of all the Jyotirlings, at Rameshwaram. The temple is known for its beauty and is considered as important as the Jyotirling at Benaras. Apart from being a revered place of worship, it is marvelled for its architecture. It is also very close to Dhanushkodi beach, the place from which Lord Rama build the Rama Sethu and is said to be one of the most visited Jyotirling. Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga gets its name because Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva in this spot.
The ancient shrine is said to have been housed inside a thatched hut till the 12th century. Parakrama Bahu of Sri Lanka was said to have begun the masonry work here. The rest of the temple was built by the Setupathy rulers of Ramanathapuram.
The current structure of the temple is believed to have been built in the 17th century AD.
Several royal families from Travancore, Ramanathapuram, Mysore and Pudukkottai have patronized the temple and added to its current beauty.
Legend has it that Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva in this spot during the construction of bridge Rama Setu. Rama installed Mahadev and worshipped him calling by the name Rameshwar Mahadev. It is said that Lord Rama sent Hanuman to Varanasi (Kashi) to bring a Linga so that he could worship Lord Shiva before leaving for Lanka. However, Hanuman could not return before the auspicious time set to perform the puja. Rama, anticipating that his prayer would get delayed, and therefore made a small linga of sand from the sea shore and worshipped it. When Hanuman returned with a Linga from Kashi, he was upset to see Shri Rama already offering prayers. In a fit of rage, childlike Hanuman tried to destroy the Linga made of sand with his tail.
But his might couldn’t work against Lord Shiva, who had been invoked by Shri Rama in the Linga. The sand structure soon hardened and turned into stone and Hanuman fell a few feet away owing to the sheer force.
In order to pacify his dearest devotee’s anger, Lord Rama applied Kumkuma (sindoor) and ghee all over his body. On seeing Lord Rama’s compassion, Hanuman cooled down.
And to ensure Hanuman’s efforts don’t go in vain, Rama also worshipped the Linga brought by him from Kashi.
Hence in the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameshwaram, the Linga (Vishwalingam) brought by Hanuman is worshipped before the RamaLingam even today.

Actually there are two stories related with the establishment of Lord Rameshwaram. One story says that Lord Rama established this lingam before killing Ravana. Other story says that after killing Ravana in order to get relief from the Brahma Hatya Lord Rama established the Rameshwara lingam . Whatever the story be, the Linga was established by Lord Rama hence receiving the name Rameshwaram.

2. If I put a dash of salt in a cup of water, can I then remove it with a spoon? Just like the salt has been added to the water God is in everything and the only way to get the salt back is to dissolve everything else.
3. Suffering is the pallet from where character gets it color. If nothing suffered then we would need no heros.
4. God is in everything, even the things you don't like. To presume to make the law of heaven is to presume as God, to presume as God is to say to don't need God.
