  • The Evil Within was one of the worst games of 2014, but I failed to properly explain why it was the case. With patches adding quality of life improvements over the past few years, I decided to replay The Evil Within to see if it is still one of the worst games to come out that year.
    In addition, I want to explain my thoughts on this game in more copious detail.

    I'm a bit late but I believe the change in gameplay from stealth to action is the biggest strength of the game. has you progress in the game you become stronger and capable of surviving, learning from your mistake in order to overcome a twisted world. and at the end your hard journey is rewarded with a big power trip. plus I believe the real fear in The evil within is the fear of being powerless I believe the gameplay serve that right: sure you can fight horde of enemy with ease in the end but no matter at what point you play the click of an empty weapon is the most scary thing I've heard and when your means of defense are put away this is where the horror gameplay element play their roles. and the reason why Laura is so you is to remind you how far you have come trading your flee for a fight, and I never felt so satisfied when I killed her felling I finally get rid of an obstacle.
    Also sorry to say that but if when Laura appeared and you clearly understand that she have a one-shot attack you still stayed in the room it's kinda your fault because the game teach you to avoid useless risk, plus I found your complain on the door wrong because even tho the door texture is contradictory there are other thing more important like the obvious light on the top or the fact that the dreadful music didn't change or the fact that at this point you are supposed to understand that you can't harm her with your current weapon it's like complaining of not having RGB light on a powerful computer. I think the issue here is that you were kinda hard headed on this section because if you die multiple time here that mean that on multiple time you didn't even interact with the door
    Also The Evil Within is not an horror game or an action game. It's a survival horror and entire different genre where you use limited resource to fight against the horror. By acknowledging that fact The Evil Within is a great survival horror in my opinion.

    This is a great game - I think a lot of the things you are complaining about are intentional design / aesthetic choices ie. The strange and constantly changing level design is because STEM combines the memories and collective consciousness of everyone who is plugged in. Therefore you are left with this strange landscape that is constantly shifting, just like a dream. And like a dream, there is no internal logic. Things don't always make sense, sometimes a door with a no entry sign will be locked, sometimes it won't. Just roll with it - that's kind of the point. The games gives you the option of playing stealthily throughout - if, like me, you prefer to do this throughout it rewards you with giving you extra ammo or green gel, which makes the bosses much easier to defeat throughout the game. I believe all games should have some ambiguities and mysteries surrounding the narrative... It shouldn't always just be laid out on a plate for the player - that's boring. It's fun to be left with something to think about. I'd recommend having a look at The Art of the Evil Within - it talks you through some of these design choices and where the inspiration for some of the enemy designs came from. This game is a completely different style of game to something like Dark Souls, and they can't really be compared. You should see this game as more of an experience, much like the Silent Hill games. You're trapped inside a dream world and you don't know what's coming next. Take your time to look around and appreciate the different environments. Hope you can revisit again in the future and enjoy it a little more!

      That's an explanation, but in my opinion it's still a bad one because it's honestly a lazy one and it simply adds nothing to the story it's telling. It doesn't even answer most of this game's plot holes. Plus, this isn't exactly a dream. It's a world manifested by Ruvik's consciousness. A world he has shown to have at least some sort of control over. So why would Seb be in one location in one moment but in an entirely seperate one in the next? Even the whole dream argument wouldn't work because dreams have SOME sort of meaning and the game should provide SOME sort of explanation or at least SOME sort of clue as to why he's in a village in one second and in a hospital or facility in the next. Yes, these are locations Ruvik is associated with but why in this order? Why Seb in particular? Leslie and Jimenez were with him during one of the transitions so why was he singled out? The game should've provided SOMETHING. The fact that no one is capable of giving me a better explanation beyond "it's just a dream bro" proves the serious faults this games has. Stories can't have randomness without at least some sort of meaning behind it. The game got close to somewhat answering these questions when it was implying that Seb had something to do with the barn burning but no. lol It was even a part of the initial draft of the game and they scrapped it for some reason. So why show this to the player? Even if these are intentional choices they are still bad ones.

      "Things don't always make sense, sometimes a door with a no entry sign will be locked, sometimes it won't" yeah how would a player who follows basic human logic have known about this? Die and break all semblance of immerssion? Even within the context of the world of the game Seb wouldn't have known the door was unlocked and he would've expectedly die. The whole trial and error nature of TEW is just bad game design.

      other than everything? the STEM is literally where the game is set, so it's disjointed nature is the reason why the world is disjointed...
      why it's random? because the stem is not stable, and while ruvik is taking control, as he is the core of the stem system, he does not have absolute contol until nearly the end of the game.
      why the story follow Sebastian? he is the player character?
      because everyone is getting shot around everywhere.

    There are so many inconsistencies in The Evil Within that I honestly think all of it was intentional. Can't say much about the plot inconsistencies since its been a while but all that gameplay stuff like the "No Entry" Door actually being the door you have to escape from or all the tremendous gameplay whiplashes where the game starts like Outlast and then eventually turns into Ultra Resident Evil 4 is why I loved it so much. I really cant think of another contemporary game that really goes out of its way to completely screw with the player.
    also the guns having upgrade system maked sense to me since I think the all upgrades were based on what Sebastian "thought" he could do. maybe the guns got larger clips because he "wanted" them to. Kinda like how in the end he just pulls the rocket launcher out of his ass. thats when he was fully aware that he could break the rules 100%.

      @Gaff. 4 года назад +3

      Yes, it simulates Sebastian's will and understanding growing stronger and allowing him to exert further control over STEM. After all, how do you actually upgrade? Think about it. You collect 'brain gel', and then put on a spiky hat that sends stuff into your brain. I love how the game doesn't spoonfeed you stuff like that but makes it possible for you to infer it if you think about what it does tell you.

      I actually also love the idea of upgrades in this game as it does mental reinforcement (eg shocking and syringes) and not just some book you read then suddenly boom you're already powered up. All these upgrades about improving his punches and the guns are actually also cleverly implemented as this is his way of dealing and coping with these insane events since he is a detective after all.

    Can't say I agree at all. I thought The Evil Within was fantastic from beginning till end and I replayed it on every difficulty because there is so much value in trying out different skills. The whole thing just has fantastic level design, atmosphere and style that I'm still baffled why it gets that much hate and I honestly think fullscreen looks kinda weird on the game since the HUD still remains on the very same spot as it was in letterbox mode...
    Playing The Evil Within on Akumu Mode where every hit is an instant death was one of my favorite gaming experiences in recent memory and I honestly think it's on the same level, if not even better than Resident Evil 4. TEW felt like the natural evolution from that game, incorporating more gadgets, stealth and use of the environment to beat your enemies.
    Kind of a pity that so many people don't seem to agree but what can you do. Cool that you went back and "fixed" your old opinion on the game. Not cool are some of the criticisms that feel more like nitpicks or can easily be explained with terms like "game design" or "balancing". Random example being the matches: Simply being able to carry around 20 of these things at the start of the game would make the whole thing way too easy. The whole matches thing isn't "logical" to begin with, since the amount of flames you produce by throwing it on an enemy is silly and shouldn't work in the first place. But questioning logic in a game that takes places in the consciousness of multiple people is a mistake to begin with.

    • @Gaff.
      @Gaff. 4 года назад +2

      Someone I discuss this stuff with often once said that the design approach in games like this, and often in good Japanese games is to immerse you with _evocative_ mechanics, with no concern for _realistic_ mechanics, which don't really work in games because true realism would typically break the game, so something will always be unrealistic. Sebastian's inventory limits are evocative of the setting and how the game was meant to feel, but as a bonus, and as you said, it takes place inside an amalgamated consciousness rather than the real world, so these things actually make perfect sense in the lore of the game. Even Sebastian's sprinting limits could be chalked up to a STEM-induced exacerbation of how his smoking has affected him.

  • @Mentallyillfood

    1) The story is inconsistent because you don't understand it
    2) The game changes in environment because you are delving further into someones mind
    3) The upgrade system was extremely simple to follow
    4) I can see why you don't like the game as you genuinely don't look very good at it, looking at your game play
    5) I agree with you that Ruvik should easily be able to kill Sebastian, only thing I can think of is that because Sebastian mind is already polluted he can survive Ruviks world.
    6) Peoples minds are incoherent and over the years peoples minds change.
    7) You keep going on about the stamina its one of the first things you should upgrade, by chapter 6 mine is at level 3 or 4. Its a survival horror as well you need to learn to be able to conserve your stamina by running and jogging.
    8) Don't use med kits in the middle of a fight.... haha

    • @chompiechomp6341
      @chompiechomp6341 4 года назад

      Actually I think there are three reasons why Sebastian can't be easily killed. First if what you said: Sebastian is actually already tainted in terms of mentality due to his traumas. What actually makes it more interesting is the similarity of their lost loved ones as both were related to getting burnt.
      The second reason that I can see is if that's the case, then everyone like Kidman and Joseph should have never been encountered. He forgets that Ruvik already said this exact thing but he enjoys torturing them and they're not that much of a threat to him so therefore they are not that significant as he had other things to do like find Leslie.
      The third reason why he Sebastian can also be more resistant is due to Leslie. If you remember when Sebastian got infected and returned to normal, Leslie was present. With Leslie having a direct influence on STEM (despite not being the host) and the trust the boy has on the detective, it is also a foreshadowing that Leslie is actually protecting Sebastian. If you also think about it, the very safe spot wherein you save your game is related to Leslie. JEM Productions actually discussed this and it actually does make sense if you think about btw so check out his video about the game. Anyways, as a patient in a ward, this actually makes good sense as this is something he would find peace despite the trauma he experienced within.

    8:09 The signaling that you're supposed to run away is indicated by her insta-kill if you get too close to her, and that the door itself is the only way out. Sebastian even exclaims "He better run".
    8:24 That door is a mind game, it's there to throw you off, the game is essentially trying to get you killed by her, the idea is for you to think outside the box and try the door, since previously you already got it established that she's invincible.

Initially Sebastian is confused and distracted and Ruvik gets the upper hand by trying to break him slowly with the "horrors", but gradually Seb starts to "take control" of the situations and now Ruvik starts making desperate attempts to take him down and this is how things start becoming less scary and more aggressive and chaotic.

    You can say you didn't like it, that it had serious issues concerning narrative flow and game mechanics which impeded it, but saying that it's "one of the worst games of 2014" just hurts the credibility of your argument because it's essentially a vapid statement that holds no real objective value. This doesn't mean you can't be subjective in your assessment, but an assessment that's based on subjectivity will almost always be flawed in its execution. Even if you build upon a rotten foundation with quality parts, that foundation is still crippling.
    Not only that, but the statement distracts from the goal of your video. You want to focus on The Evil Within, but saying something "is the worst of 2014" means that you have to analyze literally the rest of 2014 and what games came out, it's not just a value judgement on the game itself but on the industry as a whole during that particular year and dude, you don't have time for that shit. So just nix the "worst of" statements because they're only going to kneecap you in the future. Unless it's something that is so definitively terrible that 90% of people will agree it was spectacularly bad (Hunt Down the Freeman comes to mind), there is no purpose to using the phrase.

      It's my favourite game of all time. I'm considering making a video on it because I can't believe such a wonderful game gets this level of hate. But it's even more appalling that they like the sequel more purely because it's dumbed down and they don't realise it and would hate that to be true of them. What really confuses me is the Dark Souls fans that hate this game. It really feels as if people dislike this game because it's hard (at first) and they don't understand how to play, and I suppose because it wasn't marketed as hard. Because that marketing tells you what you're in for with Dark Souls, I think people are fine with dying a lot in it, but in TEW1, they feel humiliated and angry at the game because they didn't expect it.

      Imo, TEW2 is less atmospheric and tense, but had some actually good gameplay to make up for it. For how much I love TEW1 thematically, the game forces you to put up with a lot of bullshit, and half the challenge can be attributed to game mechanics screwing you over - be it 3-second stamina bar, laggy bomb minigames, arena battles that short you on ammo, matchsticks occasionally refusing to work, etc.

    • @Gaff.
      @Gaff. 2 года назад

      @@JennyTheNerdBat The 3-second sprint is fine anyway but can be upgraded. I never upgrade sprint, but if you feel you need it, you can. The bomb mini-games aren't laggy, at least for me. I try to disarm almost every bomb I come across. On Akumu, the window is even smaller and I still found it completely fair, rarely missing a bomb. The arena battles don't short you on ammo; they're meant to challenge you to do resource management, and it's one of my favourite aspects of the game. The match mechanic is another one of my favourites, tying into the resource management, particularly in arena battles, but it does occasionally not work, which is a legitimate bug.

    I can understand how ridiculous & frustrating this game is - either because it is poorly structured, narratively inconsistent, or by its imprecise, cumbersome, and clunky gameplay mechanics - but a lot of your arguments seem pedantic and drawn-out in nature.
    For example - The Door Argument
    I do not know what possessed you to STAY in the room w/ the big bad, but in what reality does that make sense? There was ONE way in and ONE way out: did you forget the way you entered through? Normal people/gamers would keep running; though, you apparently had time to take a beat and question the legitimacy of a door? No, your argument is just a nitpick.
    You are entitled to feeling how you feel. And I agree, when this game shits the bed, it real f*cking takes a shit.
    Examples -
    • Anything after Chapter 11
    • Chapter 11
    • Arbitrarily abysmal stamina bar
    • Mechanically shoddy match system
    • It's too easy on anything but AKUMU
    • Bear traps and where they come from
    • Zombies & beasties w/ guns
    • Etc.

    • @LHudson
      @LHudson  5 лет назад +1

      To simplify the door argument, it's because I tried going through a door with the exact same texture in the safe room and it didn't open before, and that red circle with the line dashed through. It's the exact same symbol used on many signs and doors as a way to prohibit or warn against certain condition on many products and services (eg, No Smoking). If that symbol wasn't on the door, I would've gone through it, without question.

      I find it weird that you found it 'pretty easy' and still didn't like it. The truth is it isn't mechanically very difficult, but that doesn't change the fact that most people that complain about the game long enough reveal they don't understand the combat at all, and that's why they had a hard time of it. And some other people will complain about the story, but invariably they didn't understand the story, either, because you have to do some of your own thinking to do that.
      I also find it weird that all your complaints are about things I would find trivial if I agreed with you. But that's fine. If the game's not for you, the game's not for you. @@Gaff. I honestly really doubt that difficulty is the main source of why this game was middlingly received. I think you have some confirmation bias from people you've talked to regarding that one. I mean...upgrade sprint a level or two, kneecap zombies and torch them while they're down, pump up your critical hit chances, don't waste your ammo trying to run and gun due to revolver spread (basically serving the same purpose of staying still to aim like in Re4). Hit a dead end, just pull out a flash bolt and cheese some fools. Boss fight? Harpoons. I imagine most people who played are survival horror fans and it's likely most can wrap their head around these things. Re2 Remake is arguably a lot more oblique and risk/reward regarding mechanics and the resulting challenge you experience throughout the game, and that sold like hotcakes with huge amounts of praise, as did the original RE titles. Alien Isolation is WAY harder, and it's quite beloved, same case with the Souls games. All the aforementioned are some of my absolute favourites. It's pretty presumptuous and narrow-minded to dictate that nearly anyone who dislikes the game disliked it because they can't play it, in spite of lots of other flaws elsewhere.
      And it's the fact that you disagree with me that you find those matters elsewhere in the game to be trivial, not that you'd find them trivial if you agreed with me. On a mechanical level, the game just starts to get exhausting when Sebastian needs to slooooowly open every single door like it's 500 pounds. It's exhausting having throbbing, blurry double-vision effects plus grainy black and white in order to simulate mental distortion. And it's exhausting how, in spite of the twist being so predictable and the plot being relatively thin overall, the game treats it as though it were a massive, particularly unique concept that hadn't already been done in The Cell (equally as cheesily) with chunks of inspiration taken from other games, with only the justification of it all being in Ruvik's mind to cover for it.
      Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of how this guy covers the game in his video. He's pretty obnoxious and really bad at conveying a strong argument. His dumbass door hangup is absurd, and already the only thing I can remember from the vid. The combat and environments can be GREAT at times. But I also still find the game pretty weak in a lot of ways. I'm glad you and others enjoy it, though, and I'm still planning on trying out TEW2 at some point.

    The Evil Within is one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. The characters are terrible, the controls are terrible, the gameplay and level design are also terrible. The story is difficult to follow/non-existent. It tries to be an action survival horror game, but ends up failing on both counts. It's a typical lazy modern game designed purely to make money off the back of Shinji Mikami's association with Resident Evil.

      Characters are excellent,controls are perfect ,gameplay and especially level designer are top notch,only a one handed dwarf with down syndrome and and lobotomy would find it frustrating,..every aspect of this modern survival horror is as close to perfection as possible,..Truly outstanding how anybody can say such false bullshit about this Masterpiece

      @@frankbasile3662 If you think this is a good game, then you don't know much about video games, and the great games of the past. This game is made for the gullible masses. Hollow flawed gameplay ripping off bits of the last of us, broken stealth mechanics, bull***t upgrade system where you have to spend green gel to be able to run, bull***t characters that have no depth or interest to them, generic horror enemies that re appear for no reason after you've killed them earlier in the game. The whole game is a pointless bulls**t horror theme park ride designed to make the gullible part with their cash.

    I didn't know whether to like or dislike the video. What you say about the incoherence and poor pacing of the story is correct, but then you keep whining about minor gamey elements, which so so tedious to listen to.
