Why You Should Watch Dredd

  • Dredd (also known as Dredd 3D), starring Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby and written by Alex Garland, was one of the most creative and refreshing films to come out in recent memory. Sadly met with a disappointing box office reception, in addition to some comparison to the also recently released The Raid Redemption.
While it is well known for its action sequences and stunning slow-mo scenes, a lot of subtlety in the narrative and film-making has been lost. In this video essay, I want to showcase the many subtleties of this film, and ultimately show why you should watch Dredd.

While on the one hand, it’s a shame we never got a next installment (these films need to be rewarded more so than 50 Shades and films like that), maybe that’s a good thing. This film is perfect and the way it’s handled, we see how something so visceral was just another day, and we just had spent a day with Dredd just like Anderson did. I think it works well as is, and while I would have liked to see more of Urban in the role and more of this world, I feel like we got a great look at both.

It's not about the film being one closed piece, it's just that hollywoo would 100% botch everything in a sequel that made this one amazing.

I kinda disagree with your assessment of the character of Judge Dredd in this movie. One of his big moments of characterization is being lenient with the vagrant near the entrance of the complex. He lets the vagrant off with a warning, and tells him "Don't be here when i come back". He makes priorities beyond the law, about what is good and not.
I suspect you might agree with me on this, but it didn't come through in the video. Otherwise good, and i'm always down for more celebration of Dredd.

This movie went completely under my radar back in 2012, and I chanced to watch it under the first Covid lockdown. As a person who grew up with the violent without limits 80s and 90s movies, I find modern action movies a complete joke. Dredd to me is a time machine to the era where these movies were actually amazing to watch. And ever since I have recommended it to many people, that also had their mind blown by it. Hopefully at some point there are going to be enough of us to justify another adaptation of Judge Dredd to the big screen. Until then, this movie will always be 95 minutes of my life very well spent.

I've seen both Dredd and The Raid, and while I enjoyed the latter, I definitely prefer the former (despite the insistence of some of my friends saying The Raid is better). While I would say the action in The Raid is definitely better choreographed and comes off as more intense, it feels like it's not really in service to the movie. What's more, Dredd makes me actually care about Anderson, Dredd, and even MaMa to an extent. The Raid really doesn't give me much of a vehicle to put myself in its world or to care about its characters.
In a nutshell, The Raid had better action, but Dredd is the better movie.

    • @Kijinn
      @Kijinn 3 года назад

      @@alexman378
"Dredd" is primarily a (relatively) big budget movie that places its action in a smaller scale setting (compared to other modern action movies, where the big scale setting translates into the imminent destruction of the earth or the universe). The small scale creates suspense a lot more efficiently, because the threats and the characters are more relatable.
"The Raid" does the same thing on a smaller budget and places the focus of the action on melee fighting. Unlike other martial arts movies, it doesn't put style over substance. The fights feel real (to a point) and you won't constantly be under the impression that the hero will win just because he's the hero.
The biggest argument for watching "The Raid" might be its writer/director. Gareth Evans knows how to create suspense before and during the action. He's become a little better known recently through the TV series "Gangs of London", which he created and also directed the first two episodes of.
IMO (and I'm in a minority there), you could skip "The Raid 2". Where the first movie felt compact with steady tension, the sequel is far too loosely told. The action sequences will mostly just entertain martial arts enthusiasts, for the level of realism. There isn't much tension because nothing important is at stake and you'll know who's going to win in advance.
If you should like part one, though...might as well give the sequel a look.

Great commentary, agree with you completely on all points. Dredd 2012 is an underappreciated gem that was sadly lost in the wave of predictable Hollywood films released at the time. The superhero genre had been configured to PG level entertainment mostly suited for kids so a gritty, heavy, R rated comic adaptation was likely to fall by the wayside. Sadly, at the time I was unable to see it in the theater. But I later watched it on InDemand at home and
immediately regretted not seeing it on the big screen, the mini-gun scene most of all. I was also mesmerized by the scene in the middle of the film where Anderson was gazing out across the cityscape at the other housing towers, but they had no escape and they may have well have been thousands of miles away. And you're correct, it was a very intricate plot with a lot of progress and development. But it seems movies like that don't appeal to general audiences, who are used to just consuming predicable and shallow movies over and over. It was good to later view a video clip of Karl Urban commenting on how high sales of the DVD were once released, showing that it had a strong following due to just word of mouth later. Once again, great review, and even if the world these filmmakers created is never revisited, maybe vids like yours will convince newer viewers to watch and buy it and show support for this amazing movie even a decade later. Also the vids of Karl and Olivia thanking the fans for their support helped. Again, well done.

It's a great movie and all, but with how fucked their world is, it doesn't make sense that Mega City One is still standing. At least in the 1995 movie, they had soldiers outside of the judges who guard the walls and the prisons of the city, as well as specialized black-ops troops who hunt corrupt judges. But in the 2012 movie, there's just the judges, and at least a good number of them work for the gangsters, not the law. The city would have fallen a long time ago, with one half of the judges overwhelmed by all the criminal rioters, and the other half of the judges, sensing where the wind is blowing, would join the criminals against their more morally upright brethren.
