Some paint has some bad chemicals. If you plan on eating the plants or fruit I would not use any cans that had paint in them. The plants can take in the chemicals into their roots and to the fruit.

Kale doesn't have a taste. The leaves feel paperish and harder than spinage, but I eat them for health purposes. I put Mayonaise on it for a taste (the healthy Mayonaise)
I once asked one guy about growing edibles in plastic containers. he said theres a lack of research on this. we often grow plants and no one think about whether its safe for consumption. Paint has many toxic and any left over will be absorbed by the plants. the humans that eat it will have to indirectly consume the toxic. Its the same as fishes, why big fishes have more heavy metals than smaller fishes. I hope whoever that is thinking of growing something you want to put into your body reconsider the options that you are using. Keep the paint buckets for plants that u grow for viewing but not for foods.
go to your local snackbar/ restaurant...and ask for the giant empty buckets from the mayonaise or other food ..that way you know it foodgrade plastic!! i have got some nice containers in the past that way!! if you build a good understanding with the snackbar...they wil save them for you..because tgey have no use for them..that way you can build your stock of containers..
The ideas are really nice. And even though.... I can't understand why you're using so much plastic... You can see pieces of plastic laying around, probably as a result of it breaking into smaller pieces... I mean... In one hand it's nice that you can reuse it... But putting plastic in your own garden.... :-S
